Who was Don Rickles?
Просмотров 1072 года назад
Don Rickles was THE insult comedian. Rickles basically was the roastmaster of The Dean Martin Roasts. He was friends with Frank Sinatra and best friends with Bob Newhart. Before becoming known as an insult comedian to the rat pack, he made several appearances in small roles. He was the voice of Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story. In short, even though he slings insults, off stage he lives up to his n...
What THIS Comedian Can Teach You About Success

In Hollywood, you'd hear about how some of the celebrities that came across as being the perfect family man or decent down to Earth human being were actually terrible people, i.e., Bing Crosby. It's been cited by several vaudeville comedians at the time. He took elements from Fay. Just not his real life personality because as stated, Fay was not very nice. That's where I think maybe some of the vanity and looks come from. Fay by historians and vaudeville performers gets credit for being the first notable standup. Because I tend to agree with you from what little recordings exist of Fay, but he gets credit for doing it first.

    • @OldTelivisionRocks
      @OldTelivisionRocks 4 месяца назад

      Being a writer myself, in many ways yes. But also, Jack was doing vaudeville before he had his set list of writers. He was in pictures before he really started in radio. And his persona really developed in time with the help of writers. Jack was described as a good comedy editor by behind the scenes staff. His violin playing badly act came strictly out of vaudeville. As Steve Martin said recently in his documentary “oh, people like it when the tricks don’t work(magic act)”. Jack found people liked it when he messed up and did an ad lib.

    Howard Stern has said he tried comedy in his early days of radio but couldn’t get anywhere. He knew that Jack Benny only pretended to be a bad violinist on the radio, but was actually very accomplished as a player. Howard said that he decided to become a good DJ first, learning to go in and out of commercials on time, etc, and then start doing funny bits. He knew what was important to achieve was being professional first, it also explained why he had battles with managers who had no clue how to run radio stations later on.

He broke segregation, Eddie Anderson (Rochester), any hotel that had been booked for the entire cast that refused Rochester, he would simply say, come on gang, we are not staying here. There is a dispute on whether he took the name from Jack's show or an episode of "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" which was in syndication at the time he changed his name to Rodney Dangerfield. Rick Nelson was told to use the name as a alias on a date in one episode. The writers probably used the name when they remembered the name from the radio broadcast. They were writing Ozzie's radio show back then. They are all gone now. It is interesting though where he picked it up because his real name wasn't working according to his manager.

    • @alloftheclassics
      @alloftheclassics Год назад

      Indeed. I think there were common names that all the old shows used back then and I think it kind of stemmed from vaudeville. There seemed to be names people felt comfortable using. Jack said "Rodney" (although not Dangerfield) a couple of times, randomly throughout the radio and TV show.

    During the mid 1960's to the mid 1970's Eddie "Rochester' Anderson was used by a few representatives of the black community as an example of of what an Uncle Tom was. I don't see it and neither does anyone who watches now. Early in the radio show Rochester had some stereotypical gambling issues. He was never the butt of the joke on television and even in radio his weaknesses were always overshadowed by Jack's. These examples were rare for the time. Amos and Andy were stereotypes and white comedian's portrayed them on the radio. Many black households listened and also watched the black cast on the TV series. We learn as we go along in life or we are supposed too. Intentionally hurting someone else is never funny. The greats like Eddie and Jack make fun of themselves. Some say the holocaust of WWII caused Jack to rethink Eddie's part in the show. I think it was their affection for each other. What some people saw as laziness on Rochester's part in a few of the shows was actually Rochester refusing to do any work on his very rare day off. Regular viewers and listeners realized that immediately. He took a position when Jack gave him a chance the same as any overworked employee. He also didn't hold back when Jack teetered on paying a bill, a dinner check or buying someone a gift it was almost always Mary and when she refused to work on TV anymore it fell to Rochester. You can't call someone an Uncle Tom because they have affection for a cheap, vain white man. That decision is their own. Rochester saw Jack for what he was and his heart said to help him. He knew Jack loved him and he returned that love. Eddie's former home is now a halfway house with many rooms and a pool for residents to be comfortable in it while they are there. Some people keep on giving even when they are gone. I looked at the home on Google Earth street view a couple years ago and two black men in the front yard were posing in a dance for the camera as it went by. Much like Rerun from What's Happenin'...Sooo funny

      I was in my 20s when I made this. I didn't mean to say he wasn't influential, but more say that he wasn't AS major of an influence that can be traced back to him. Rochester WAS a HUGE star and had major influence. But from my research of who influenced who, black comics and women were more likely to cite someone else as their comedic influence that I couldn't always trace back to Jack. I LOVE to go back into who was the original influencer. That's how I found Jack in the first place. So I just felt uncomfortable saying he was "father" of modern comedy for those groups, of which, I am included in the woman category, when I could not as easily point to a lot of examples. He still is pretty influential among the mainstream. Mary, being on the show, wasn't exactly a huge "influence" on other comics though, far as I can tell. I do know she was his wife. If you love Jack Benny, you should join the International Jack Benny Fan Club on Facebook and sign up for the upcoming convention in February.
