  • Steve shows how to open up and re-assemble a flat panel iMac G4. There's a bit more to it than just taking out and putting back some screws.

Thanks for that nice and detailed video. I actually found the device quite easy to take apart due to your explanation.
Unfortunately my iMac won't start up - the PRAM battery has around 3.2 volts - it should have 3.6v and I really hope that it will start again after replacement - fingers crossed!

    Where’s the power supply?
You said that this is a take apart, but the only thing that you have done is take off the bottom case.
And you did put it together again. That’s good.

Hi, sorry I didn’t get that far into disassembling the thing. I was trying to cover what you’d need to do for basic maintenance like the PRAM battery and upgrading the memory. That’s all made tricky because of having to deal with things like the thermal paste. The power supply is a small board with one round side, bolted in adjacent to the hard drive and optical drive in the stack that remains in the upper case in the video. There’s nothing especially tricky about that part, just keep note of what order things came out so they can go back in reverse order - the annoying part on this machine is having to take so many things off in order to get to other things. I once had to replace the neck on one of these, which required disassembling pretty much every single thing.

Hello! I have a question, I’ve had an iMac G4 since i was really little, it was my childhood computer, and I’ve just the other day started using it again. It was sitting in storage for a while but works just fine now. I am worried though because it seems quite dusty on the inside (looking down through the holes on the top), I have no computer experience whatsoever and am worried this may impact my beloved computer’s performance an longevity in the future. I don’t think I could take it apart myself, so I’m wondering if i should take it to my computer guy to get it cleaned out?
As I said there are no obvious issues with it’s performance, I would just like to have this computer with me as long as possible as i am incredibly attached to it. I don’t know much about computers as this is the only computer I’ve ever owned, so I don’t know if the dust something i should worry about at all?
