I love how they write Mary. They could have gone down the obvious path of making her a figure of ridicule for her religious beliefs, but she's smart and funny, and she gives great advice. Her religious beliefs are strong and deep, but as long as you accept her and don't try to belittle her she doesn't care who you worship or not. She's the classic older person struggling to keep up with the changing times and words and phrases she was used to growing up are still there despite being considered wrong nowadays. My dad was the same. He used mild racial slurs to describe someone that he was saying the nicest things about.
Actually, given the high caliber of writing, I don't think they would have stooped so low to ridicule her religion. That kind of stuff is reserved for low-brow Hollywood hacks.

Sheldon's mother was great character, but as the show was changing, so was she.
