  • Amongst the many communities that live in the coastal state of Maharashtra, is a community of Jews called Bene Israel. While the facts of their origins are lost in time, some of their recipes have survived. From a part of the community settled in Pune comes a recipe that used to be prepared mainly on the day of Sabbath. In the compound of the only synagogue in Pune, Aditya Bal joins the members in preparing that signature dish, 'Fish Alberas'. His quest takes him next to the bustling city of Mumbai, on the outskirts of which Bene Israelis live. Here, another ancient recipe is resurrected - 'Saat Padri'. As they make this delicacy, Aditya discovers the importance of the number '7' in Jewish tradition.

Saat Padri is a Maharashtrian recipe too 😊
Thousands of years we stayed together, so obliviously sharing ingredients and tricks and tools for kitchen must have happen .
Kokan and Bombay bene isrealli speaks marathi as a mothertounge 😇 .....
I have been eating exactly same thing as traditional diwali faral from childhood , not sure of number of layers but from Suji/Rava + dry fruit filling to adding Ghee/Tup between layers of covering to making Dough in a way so covering becoming flaky etc etc . Everything my grandmother used to do religiously :-) l
we are from SKP community , one of origenal inhabitants of Bombay with 900 years of written history and my family has almost 200 years of land records as Bombayite .....
Certainly, neither Israeli or shared traditions will be ever Lost ❤

Thank you for the lovely content. The Bene-Israeli and Jews largely, in India are almost a forgotten community as thier population has shrunk exponentially. The handful people of the Jewish faith in India are struggling to maintain their identity. Thank you for bringing their recipes to us.

Has anyone from the coasts of India not eaten fish with coconut milk and potatoes or eaten coconut rice. Are these really the lost recipes, I wonder 🤔.

i am wondering if the name "alberas" is from the alburz/alborz/albourz or elburz mountains in Iran....earlier Persia, from where the parsis(zoroastrians ) came ....fish alberas may have been a fish(cuisine) from the rivers flowing down from mountain alborz ? i guess over the ages the original recipes have been tweaked with gujerati/maharashtrian/konkani ingredients /influences,partof the qissa-i sanjaan.sadly few recipes survive ...akuri...shakshuka....parpeta par eeda...

The narli bharat is purely a costal Maharashtraian dish, as far as I know. Even the saat padri is a bit modified maharashtrian karanji.

They're not exactly the same as there are differences between the rules of kosher and halal. Though most kosher food is also halal....but not all halal food is kosher.
