Rave: It was a junior clothing store that sold cheap, trendy clothes. This was before Forever 21. A go-to place to get glittery vinyl pants in the ‘90s for $12.99. There was a related store for younger girls called Rave Girl.
It's like everyone has been killed by a contagious virus and you're the only person living on the planet. I love your abandoned and dead mall tour videos. It is really amazing.
Only thing is in some sort of disaster like that or a war is it would still be full of stuff not empty shelves. The stores and mall owner take anything worth anything with them.
It's videos like this that have me convinced that one of these days you'll be walking through an abandoned mall and stumble across a serial killer while he's in the middle of eviscerating someone.
haha .. hilarious ...but not really so much I guess. You'd never know 'what' to expect, especially nowadays it would seem. But hell in any case hope my man Mr. Bell there packin' some 'HEAT' haha ...(or at MINIMUM some like damn 'Bear Spray' or some shit ;) haha ...ch ...fuck that shit lol)
@@Indeed007 The problem with that is that he's trespassing. If he gets caught they probably won't charge him unless they've had a lot of problems there recently. If you're strapped, they might decide to be dicks about. Worth it if it saves your life, of course, but I'd definitely go non-lethal.
This series could have easily been pitched as “ooh! Look how creepy these empty malls are!” but it’s not like that. It showcases the beauty of the emptiness and these places are treated with reverence and I really just love that
If I ever get the money, I'm going to buy a mall that's in decent condition and turn it into something like no other mall. One section will look like it's from the 1950's, inside and out of everything, the other section will be 1960's and the third will be 1970's. All of the decor, signs, lights, light poles, tiles, colors, vintage video arcades, fashion shows from each period, employees dressing up for the eras, selling vintage items in the stores for each area, the outside will have vintage entrances and signs too, have a early to mid 60's restaurant, early to mid 70's movie theater and vintage 50's cars on display. And every Christmas, there will be vintage decorations. And one section of the mall will be modern. Would you go to a mall that looked like that? Music of each period will be playing in their sections too.
I don't know why, but when I watch these abandoned store videos I picture myself as being that one guy still working there getting like one customer somehow and then saying to that customer "Sorry we don't have anything here."
We have a dead mall about 30 min from our house and I was just telling my husband how weird it is that the ONLY store left is bath and body works lol. Apparently it’s more common than I thought
+This is Dan Bell. Josh, was just curious if you were exploring alone that night because in two clips from this vid, I saw someone, obviously not you, moving. Please tell me if this is another one of those OMG did you see that vids.
The reason the power is back on is because the people who own the mall currently are trying to sell it, that's also why it looks a bit cleaner than before. This mall like a year after it closed was trashed and full of glass from the jewelry stores.
i was looking for the most vaporwave-esque mall you were at and then I saw that you even put vaporwave in the title! thank you for acknowledging my favorite internet culture!

Built in the 80s. Back then the styles were Memphis Milano, Retro Futurism, & Art Deco had a big comeback. The Memphis style was a throwback to mid century kitsch mixed with influence from India.
@14:07 "Hello I'm Satan and I'll be your guide to the mall this dark night, hope you enjoy your shopping, all our finest fashions only cost you your soul.. for some.. quite the bargain.. hahahahahahhahah"
I wish malls would play the old 70's/80's mall music instead of modern pop and hip hop and rock.....mall music is more relaxing to shop to imo.....another great video dan! Sad to see malls like this though, big empty lifeless buildings after a lifetime of being open and generations of teens hanging out, they just die and nobody tries to reopen them or at least replace them with a more modern shopping plaza. Id love to visit an older mall that hasn't been remodeled yet or even one that died but is in this good of condition!
Harry Sheldon the mall I work at is actually really new and busy all the time and is still bumping Tears for Fears and Tina turner every once and a while. The 80s will never die.
Love your videos sir! Dead Malls have been a hobby of mine for years now. I am in my mid 40's and Mall Culture played a huge part of my youth. A meeting place, shopping excursion, date night, arcades, you name it. When our mother asked where we wanted to go it was always the Mall. Kids today have no where to go anymore!
actually. in my town our mall is where everyone likes to go. there's only like 2-3 stores that arent open and its 80% full and watching these videos makes me sad because tanger outlit is going to take out our mall. and it upsets me and I'm only 18
Hayley Jean Proctor Our mall was like that too until recently. Stores have begun leaving including anchors and it's slowly dying which is sad, but it really isn't a great mall. I'm 21 and say up until a few years back, it was still a popular place. Everyone in high school used to hang out there. There is also a wierd half outdoor half enclosed mall that has been dying since the other was build around the 80s,
This is seriously one of my favorite videos. It's like this place was frozen in time and just remains in this purgatory. I went up here myself a few months ago and it looks like most of the doors were sealed up after some kids got in and vandalized the place, its a shame. I would love to drive up here again and get some video footage or at least pictures before they decide to tear it down or whatever they have planned. I'm surprised you even found a way in. Love your work, keep it up.
have you ever been in one of these places and momentarily felt like you were surrounded by a thriving environment? like all of the sudden the mall was bustling with shoppers and employees? your videos seem like a scary movie franchise that hasn't been started yet...
This is still one of my absolutely favorite videos of yours! Dan, it just occurred to me the reason that the power might still be on in this dead mall... my personal opinion is the reason the power is still on in the mall, and it is somewhat accessible, is that it seems that the current owners of the mall would like the mall to Burn Down. In the video you made with Josh, he mentioned that the owners of the mall are waiting for the mall to sort of 'fall down' so that they can replace it with a Wall Mart. Also you, Dan, happened to mention that, with the dead tree being left in the closed store, that "one match could light the whole place on fire" My guess is that the current owners of the mall would like for the whole place to burn down do to and electrical fire, and then collect the insurance money, which would cover the costs of tearing down the mall and removing it. Just my thoughts.
6:42 Is probably my favorite shot you've ever taken in a dead mall. I feel like I could just drift away from existence and find myself here. It's eerie and creepy yet oddly comforting. Like it shouldn't exist at all, and yet it does. And the Vaporwave to add to the scene just fits perfectly. This is honeslty one of my favorite liminal spaces I've ever witnessed. Thank you for doing what you do.
+kristo Some of the folks who do that apparently aren't in their right mind...I heard of one story where some guy was trying to steal some copper wire - he got electrocuted and died (Rolling Acres Mall, 2011).
So many great memories of this mall, the shot of the Pocket Change nearly had me in tears. I used to pop so many quarters into those machines, and when you went into Hoyt's I lost it! Thank you so much Dan, love your videos.
+NoMooreMercy Right? I "grew up" at this mall too. It's so surreal whenever I see a video of it now. I didn't even know it had closed (I'd moved away to Boston) until I saw a video of it a few months ago. For me it wasn't the Hoyts, even though I saw most of my theater movies there until the new stadium seating place opened up near FSK mall, it was the Waldenbooks. :'( And I seriously don't want to think about how many quarters I blew with friends playing Gauntlet at Pocket Change. Shit, now I feel old.
+arianasilver I still live in Frederick, actually not far from the FSK Mall and the only thing left at this mall is Boscov's & Home Depot. I was introduced to Mortal Kombat at that Pocket Change I used to sink so many quarters into that machine, lol. I actually work on route 40 and the entire strip has become so run-down, it's a hotbed for crime. I remember it being so much different in the 90s.
Yeah, I've had friends back home tell me that the Golden Mile is run-down and completely different now. That's a shame, really. I guess because all the new businesses and nicer housing were going in out by the FSK. I used to love eating at that diner on the strip near the mile. Mountainview? I can't remember the name! It was next to ChiChis, I think lol
Mall of the Apocalypse. Love this one! The mannequin...Kept waiting for it to move or blink on the close-up! The cam light just illuminating the center bottom of frame, making the top inky danger hiding who-knows-what.. And the editing and audio / sound mix. Great job on this one as usual!
I went to this mall two nights ago. I saw your signature you left on the marker board in the office in the movie theater. "This is Dan Bell". You are such a boss! It was so creepy being in this mall at 12am, and I was with 5 people! But you, you did this by your self.
+Tia Fogle there was many ways to get in this mall. However, the door that we got into is locked. They plan on demolishing this mall soon to replace it with a Walmart. It's on heavy security watch now. It's impossible to get in.
My own fascination with urbex began with a cycle of dreams I used to have when I was much younger - room after room of mysterious, abandoned spaces - silent chambers, halls, passageways, all filled with odd & intriguing artifacts. This video takes me to that dream-plane the way none of my own explorations have. Thank you!! And as always, I love the way you use sound.
Omg, ME TOO!!! Except with abandoned malls. As a child I used to dream of empty malls, and secret corridors of old and outdated decor etc. Walls that hid secret rooms of closed down stores and restaurants etc. And this was in the 80's and early 90's--long before anyone could have ever even forseen all of these mall closures! So trippy! I'm glad to finally know that someone else understands!!! Will you be my friend, lol?
After 7 years of not knowing what that store with the blue wavy neon on the ceiling is, literally 10 minutes ago, I found it! That's an 80's or 90's Camelot Music! I have been legit obsessed with trying to find out where that blue neon came from for a long time. I finally figured it out!
Wow.. You're brave man. At 18:42 when u zoom in through the doors at the cvs you can clearly see a shadow move from right to left. It looks like its looking in your direction.. Creepy as hell
This one was particularly surreal. The trimmed tree bit made me think of this place as so defeated that its reality was beginning to contract in upon itself, smashing even the most dissimilar elements together into a hodge-podge of decay.
This is seriously like art? And it's also such an eerie feeling. These empty malls like this feel so devoid and sad. Like there's just something missing.
The neon room was brilliant :) That would certainly light up your sitting room on a cold November evening! Looks like the trees were still alive; are they still maintaining the place? Awesome video Dan, as always.
The room with the plants in it gives me a strong surreal Silent Hill Horror Vibe... So weird, a room full of dead leafs, seems like the symbolic kind of stuff a japanese horror game would have.
I can't even begin to imagine how much adrenaline pumping through your veins while you're exploring this place ... What a beatiful Mall this is... A place to fear and comfort at the same time.
Why did you do all this, alone by yourself? It´s pretty cool, no question....but have you ever think about that you eventually not getting out there again? You could get hurt there....tripping over something....falling down somewhere or get hit by something....and nobody is with you then, to help you. And also, there could be other people inside this buildings and maybe there´re not that friendly Please take care of yourself.
It’s pretty thrilling actually but it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Anyway he’s got a cell phone so he could always call a buddy if he gets in trouble.
some part of me expected that fucking mannequin at the beginning to just. jump at you or smth idk this seems like it could be an indie horror game setting
It's so wild seeing Rave with all its mirrors in its dead form. I used to goof around with those mirrors all the time at Cascade Mall before they closed down there when the mall was still open. I feel old and I'm not even in my 30s yet.
Thank you so much for making these videos, Dan! When I was young my father was a mall manager, so I spent countless hours playing with my siblings in the back offices and service tunnels. This wasn't his mall, but it still feels great to be able to see some places like those again. Even if they're spooky now..
Great vid Dan. Your a genius. I absolutely love what you did with the song at the end so fitting. Sorry to hear about your friend. Cheers from Vancouver Canada
1:42 "Y'know the type of guy who does bad things and wonders why his life sucks? Welp, that was me! Every time something good happened to me, something bad was waiting right around the corner. So I made a list of every bad thing I've ever done and one by one I been trying to make up for them. I'm just try'na be a better person. My name is Earl." :P
Cool story here ! My grandmother actually came up with the name for Payless. In her town they did a contest on what the should call this new shoe store and my grand ma being competitive XD took it upon her self to think day and night about the name. She descided Payless because she was sick of buying shoes at such a high price ! Of course being a corporate company she got absolutely no credit but it's still a cool story !
This is pretty weird... What a strange thing to lie about especially being so easily verified. According to their wiki(en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payless_ShoeSource#Key_dates) they had many names prior to Payless which was chosen 22years after the opening of the first "volume distributors". Which was then named "volume shoe corporation" before being called "Payless shoes source". Either your grandma lied to you or you really care about RUclips thumbs for some reason.
Dan, this post apocalyptic vision is your best work EVER. It took real balls to break into an abandoned mall (that still had a power feed) and take some of the most haunting visuals that I have ever seen. Beautiful but deeply somber at the same time. It's the fule of my nightmares because I love malls to my core. Amazing stuff.
By FAR the creepiest and most depressing and abandoned malls I've seen thus far. The fact that this was shot at night and dubbed in with the sound of electrical currents…gave me multiple heart attacks.
18:34 - So we all saw the person walk by in the reflection of the CVS door, right? Also, it's super weird how a bunch of the stores have had their gates cut open.
This is my favorite video in the Dead Mall Series thus far (even more than Rolling Hills). I love the creepy background music. The Xmas mannequins were disturbing. That first one looked like a hobo...with dead eyes. The second one made me jump! I actually thought the same thing about the giant pine cone ornaments (alien pods)...just before you said it. Do you know what store the blue neon wave used to be in? That was amazing. Thanks for the great series!
This is like some post-apocalyptic dream. Just the right amount of decay and the music still playing, like something straight out of a video game. EPIC
SHADOSTRYKR when those more expensive clamshell phones like the Razr came out, i always thought nothing would ever top them . Amazing how fast technology moves
Until recently had only my youtube on my cellphone so could not reply to your videos. Got my internet turned on..so now its time to say this...I absolutely love your videos and have watched them all. I love the abandoned motels and hotels and especially love the mall series. Thank you so much..will be looking forward to your new videos..you guys rock!...cant believe the power is still on in some of these places either..creepy.
Fantastic video! The store at 6:30 was a Camelot Music. I worked at one from 1993 to 1994. Our Camelot closed in 1998 and then became something called Baskets of Blessings. They sold candles and old-timey furniture and signs. It closed two years ago. I got to go in the store this year. The original Camelot carpet is still there. The blue neon snaking across the ceiling still works!
you really made some gems with these videos. they are comforting from the nostalgic feeling i get from the decor and music you put in. yet theres a piercing sadness of the reminents of youthful times and americana lost to modern times

15:55 more like long gone silvers.
sean uminski Nice
😂
What a knee slapper
Excellent
I miss their fish
possibly the most Vaporwave thing i've ever seen
Mall of the Apocalypse. Love this one! The mannequin...Kept waiting for it to move or blink on the close-up! The cam light just illuminating the center bottom of frame, making the top inky danger hiding who-knows-what.. And the editing and audio / sound mix. Great job on this one as usual!
10:41 rip my freakin heart
Gabi Murray Doesn't help how the maniquin was in a groping position with his hands..
I read this comment at 10:37 and then freaked out with Dan lol
Roflmao
I went to this mall two nights ago. I saw your signature you left on the marker board in the office in the movie theater. "This is Dan Bell". You are such a boss! It was so creepy being in this mall at 12am, and I was with 5 people! But you, you did this by your self.
How did you get in?
+Tia Fogle there was many ways to get in this mall. However, the door that we got into is locked. They plan on demolishing this mall soon to replace it with a Walmart. It's on heavy security watch now. It's impossible to get in.
Cool video. Had a good laugh at the "Guess Which Asshole Called?" message cards.
hhh i clicked to a random point in the video (1:52) and saw that doll thing and almost had a heart attack. like holy shit, i jumpscared myself
Go to 10:42
Omg me too
It looks like Bob from Bob's burgers
😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
@@TownieGirl1974 that dumb thing!!!
What you're thinking of is called the backrooms. Look it up. It's very intriguing and fascinating to me.
After 7 years of not knowing what that store with the blue wavy neon on the ceiling is, literally 10 minutes ago, I found it! That's an 80's or 90's Camelot Music!
I have been legit obsessed with trying to find out where that blue neon came from for a long time. I finally figured it out!
This is honestly one of my favorite episodes of The Dead Mall Series. I've watched it numerous times now.
Wow.. You're brave man. At 18:42 when u zoom in through the doors at the cvs you can clearly see a shadow move from right to left. It looks like its looking in your direction.. Creepy as hell
It's at 18:36 and that looks like someone outside of the mall to me.
As fascinated as a I am with these dead mall videos, for some reason they make me feel nostalgic, depressed, and lonely at the same time
Same. I learned the term “liminal space”. Fits perfectly.
Awesome video! Digging the dead mall series. How long has the mall been abandoned?
Explore With Us 2013
Really love your channel as well EWU, keep up the good work!
WTF Did no one see the shadow move in the distance starting at 22:17?! It's right by the exit sign😱
Holy shit, well spotted
I saw it, too.
He's actually there with 3 other people this time. I saw one of the other guy's videos of this exploration and found Dan's channel that way.
At 18:40 as well, there's a reflection in the glass door that moves
Kyle Wolfe The one on the left?
The room with the plants in it gives me a strong surreal Silent Hill Horror Vibe... So weird, a room full of dead leafs, seems like the symbolic kind of stuff a japanese horror game would have.
Nope. No japanese horror game ever had room full of leafs.
I can't even begin to imagine how much adrenaline pumping through your veins while you're exploring this place ...
What a beatiful Mall this is... A place to fear and comfort at the same time.
This is easily one of my favorites. I really love the hum of all the forgotten neons and fluorescents.
Why did you do all this, alone by yourself?
It´s pretty cool, no question....but have you ever think about that you eventually not getting out there again?
You could get hurt there....tripping over something....falling down somewhere or get hit by something....and nobody is with you then, to help you.
And also, there could be other people inside this buildings and maybe there´re not that friendly
Please take care of yourself.
Because he's DAN BELL DAMMIT!!!
This man invented the fast food taco...he can do ANYTHING.
He wasn't alone.
facebook.com/thisisdanbell/posts/1478995298895138
@Sam : That's so sad.
It’s pretty thrilling actually but it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Anyway he’s got a cell phone so he could always call a buddy if he gets in trouble.
some part of me expected that fucking mannequin at the beginning to just. jump at you or smth idk
this seems like it could be an indie horror game setting
It's so wild seeing Rave with all its mirrors in its dead form. I used to goof around with those mirrors all the time at Cascade Mall before they closed down there when the mall was still open. I feel old and I'm not even in my 30s yet.
Thank you so much for making these videos, Dan! When I was young my father was a mall manager, so I spent countless hours playing with my siblings in the back offices and service tunnels. This wasn't his mall, but it still feels great to be able to see some places like those again. Even if they're spooky now..
The aisle lights in the abandoned movie theater add a special creepiness to this one.
How were you able to pull this off? You got a buddy that's a night watchman? To be able to turn on all the lights is crazy
It's only a matter of time before Dan finds some kind of SCP, He's going to open the storeroom to find some weird dinosaur cat.
We need to do some hardcore drugs together.
+Nuclearxpotato LOLLL
Nuclearxpotato 10:30 seems close enough to me
At 18:36 who is that moving in the reflection?
Yo! That’s scary, and definitely not dan himself
Great vid Dan. Your a genius. I absolutely love what you did with the song at the end so fitting. Sorry to hear about your friend. Cheers from Vancouver Canada
Watching today in memory of Tyler 🌹❤️
i can tell someone also found the Kmart cassette tapes that someone uploaded to the archives. Really awesome stuff to take a listen to!
Rad Dan did a great job with these pieces. I added in the announcements.
+unnamed715 This made me chuckle.
Alexis Mason
Haha, sweet! :3
+Alexis Mason daer god i see you in every comment
Lenny Man Yeah, I don't have a life. :)
Alexis Mason
Life is overrated anyway. :3
That jazz music and lady talking over the speaker is so eeri
This is the most nightmarish thing I have seen in a very long time and I loved every minute of it
You should get an award for "The Dead Mall Series" ✉
I'd love to find a place like this and contact the city before it's demolished. So many cabinets and shelves I could use for my business...
euvi85 they would make u pay
One of your creepiest in the dead mall series...bravo!!!
That's a really nice story!
Awesome! PS saw your Queen name and profile pic. Love it.
That's totally not true😹😹😹😹
Guess what? My mom made the name for Victoria's secret!! Oh. My. Gosh. I'm telling you, Becky. So true. I swear. 😆😆😆
I hear that first Smooth Jazz jingle a lot. I think my love for smooth jazz was motivated by the mall music of the 80s.
My favorite mall video of all time! Perfect example of why Dan Bell is one of the greatest and most important artists of our times and beyond
This is vintage dan bell, honestly the height of the dead mall series
Probably one of the best channels on RUclips.
proper people are pretty good too!
Love the Najee playing in the background. I adore mi amore.
Imagine a party in there. Put in a couple lounge areas, multiple dancefloors, some bars, wardrobe, flashing lights and a food truck. So sick
Someone should make a survival horror game like this. Would be awesome. XD
Lisa Zoria Left 4 dead
Check out silent hill 3
@Get Nae Nae'd A survival horror game is any game in that genre. Expert.
THE BEST answer would be The Last Of Us and Bioshock/Fallout.
Dead rising kinda, except is not an abandoned mall, is just a mall full of zombies.
Hey Dan! Love the Dead Mall series and hope you make more of these. Great editing and perfect use of Vaporwave music as well.
its amazing how the mall still has power and the a announcer still plays.
That was addet ...
By FAR the creepiest and most depressing and abandoned malls I've seen thus far. The fact that this was shot at night and dubbed in with the sound of electrical currents…gave me multiple heart attacks.
I just love the crystal clear sound you record as well as the high quality 1080P recordings... I just loooove it! tHE AMBIENCE is just amazing! :D
theres some apocalyptic vibe looking at these empty malls
18:34 - So we all saw the person walk by in the reflection of the CVS door, right?
Also, it's super weird how a bunch of the stores have had their gates cut open.
yep
Yeah. I went back to make sure. Maybe it was that storeroom mannequin...
+DasVERMiT
You're right....wow guess he didn't see it at the time.
+Hugh Janus ....he may not be alone. Could be a look out.
Thinking maybe it's Will, his producer.
+Tami Traylor I DO agree to you that Atlantic Star are really creepy! If I hear it, I run like a fucker!
The Cory Hart interlude was nice, those Christmas decorations were creepy!
This is like some post-apocalyptic dream. Just the right amount of decay and the music still playing, like something straight out of a video game. EPIC
Amazing to go back to this and see how far Dan has gone from here!
18:33 Was someone there with you? Odd moving shadow in the window of the door.
Guess that Moto Razr dates the shut down time.
SHADOSTRYKR when those more expensive clamshell phones like the Razr came out, i always thought nothing would ever top them . Amazing how fast technology moves
The mall only closed in 2013 so the Moto Razr kiosk probably closed several years before the main mall did.
Am I the only one who thought the Razr was a gimmicky piece of crap? And this is coming from someone who's a long time Motorola customer!
Mr. White Want to know more, look up Fredericktowne mall
the cingular logo/razr and the fkin silverstein poster had me dyin. good morning early-mid 2000s lol
Thank you, Evilla!
You are very welcome!!!!!
14:08 The perfect voice for it to say after its automated message "And welcome to Silent Hill Dan Bell..."
i wanna do shooms in an abandon mall and listen to vaporwave and explore it for hours
vegan_weeaboo can i go?
Sue Ellen Davis that would be lit lol
vegan_weeaboo haha
That really needs to become a thing.
that sounds fye sign me up
You make amazing videos, this is something I've always wanted to see but never knew it till just now. Thank you!
Yo Danimal! Y'all ever see some spooky shit when you're wandering around these places? Love your work.
you really made some gems with these videos. they are comforting from the nostalgic feeling i get from the decor and music you put in. yet theres a piercing sadness of the reminents of youthful times and americana lost to modern times
End of the world stuff right there. That was very eerie.
