Her voice is a perfect example of an Irish lilt I think it has something to do with the Irish accent. That yodeling is known as keening an Irish wailing often used during funerals as a form of grieving. The best example of this you can see is U2 live at Slane Castle (2001), the bridge between the songs All I want is you and Where the streets have no name when Bono begins keening for his father who's funeral he had attended earlier that day before the concert
Sadly, Dolores O'Riordan was but 46 years old when she left us. Gone too soon for sure. Her keening (sound of Irish grieving) still hits you straight in the heart even after almost 30 years.
I think I’m doomed to discover people after they’re gone. My parents were ultra conservative and I knew of the Cranberries and heard some of their songs, but I didn’t appreciate their talent because I was too busy dealing with all the abuse. George Carlin was another one who I rediscovered literally the day he passed. I wish I’d seen them both live.
True celtic beauty.... the voice that takes you from the edge of childhood into adolescents right into full adult ....no one could ever replace Delores
Glad to see you're getting around to more of the Cranberries. Would like to see your reaction to a couple more of theirs, Ode to My Family, and When You're Gone.
So glad you see you react to this song. I've always liked the Cranberries, but this song is probably my favorite song of theirs. It's just so beautiful. Delores O'Riordan (may she rest in peace) harmonizes with her own beautiful voice throughout the song. That "yodeling " she does is called "keening..." It's like an Irish form of yodeling. This song nearly always brings a tear to my eyes when I hear it.
I loved the Cranberries back in the 90s. Dreams is such a great song. I love watching you finding new music. There is that vicarious thrill of hearing a great song for the first time. That a lot of us know these songs doesn't really matter. Your reaction brings those memories back and somehow makes the song better. I love that.
RIP Dolores. Gorgeous Elfin girl.. No Need To Argue is still one of my top twenty albums.. Saw her live once.. She was incredible .. Shy and she never realised how good she was and was very self deprecating
I loved your reaction to her beautiful voice. The voice of an angel. There are lots of beautiful songs to be sung by her in the future that we will never now hear.
she is amazing. one of a kind. i LOVED the way she sang. when I started buying CD's in the 90's, *The Cranberries* _No Need To Argue_ was the 2nd CD I bought. In case you care... my first CD was *Hootie & The Blowfish* _Cracked Rear View_
You will hear that same sound from many Irish artist. In particularly those from the west coast of Ireland where Dolores was from Limerick. There’s a traditional type of music called Sean-nós (old Style) in that tradition they have a sound call Keening it’s a lament conveying deep loss.
Love The Cranberries, and Dolores' vocals, including the great harmonies she layers her lead vocals with - that's as much a part of their sound as the keening. IMHO, the Cranberries were as much as part of the 90's sound as Nirvana and all the grunge bands, who were phenomenal. One of the other big female led alt-rock band of the 90's was The Sundays, whose lead singer is Harriet Wheeler. You should hit them too. Start with "Here's Where the Story Ends". After that, we'll have to hook you up with The Breeders and Belly, as long as we're talking great 90's bands with female leads. Thanks for listening and keeping great music alive! Peace from SF
I fell in love with The Cranberries the moment I heard Dolores’ voice. She will never be forgotten. I love all of their music but my favorites are “Pretty” and “Salvation”. Thank you for reacting to The Cranberries. RIP DOLORES. We will always love you.
I love the way she sings this and most other of Cranberries' songs with the keening or head-chest yodel which works so well and makes Cranberries what they were....RIP amazing Dolores! thx for sharing Jamel :)
Howdy hi hi Janel! Oh, yeah, I fell in love with her voice the first time I heard it as well. On the day she died, she was set to revise her lyrics for the song zombie with the group Bad Wolves. They went ahead and released the song and gave all the proceeds to her children. That woman knew some real heart break in her life. And I think that's what we hear in her voice as she belts out these hauntingly beautiful pieces.
Dolores was definitely a Good Human. Who had a lot of unfair bad things happen to her. The male back-up vocalist at the end was the person she was singing about. Glad you noticed the drums. Cause Fergal Lawlor has such good instincts. Emotional drummer for an emotional songwriter. Perfect.
Enjoyed the reaction Jamel. Take a listen to 'Ode To My Family', it's another wonderful showcase of Delores' voice, and as always the band sound great too.
Love, love, love this song. Bought this CD before a left on solo drive to Ottawa from Toronto back in the day, and wore it out. Always used to buy a new CD or 2 for long trips - then when you hear those songs again, they have so many memories attached.
This is basically a perfect song. Hits hard from the drop, lulls you into bliss with the fantastic vocals, and closes like a banger, with an iconic ending.
Hi Jamel - you mentioned Fleetwood Mac so thought I'd let you know that the Cranberries do live cover of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way. It's very good. You get a sense that they really respect Fleetwood Mac and do them proud with their version.
1:40 💫 yes Jamel - you get it! What a joy to see you feel the same way we (the fans) do about Dolores and this brilliant band. Thankyou brother, Dan from Australia 🇦🇺🙏🏼
“I feel like my chair’s floating” may be one the best descriptions I’ve ever heard about her genius… she was and is a musical hero of mine. Every song, every album, start to finish means everything to my heart! I’m so lucky I got to see her and the band live..thank god!❤️❤️💔❤️❤️
The simplicity of this song is what makes it beautiful, it's an unadulterated expression of a girl's first love. There's nothing vulgar or tacky, it's honest, sincere and as Dolores knew when she wrote it, ultimately naive.
Thanks for brightening my evening! Such a driving beat with Dolores' lilting. I loved this song from the first time I heard it. It's hard to believe this and "Linger" are almost 30 years old. Dolores was one of a kind. RIP
Man, this song put the Cranberries on my musical map. I seriously think this was the first song of theirs I'd ever heard, and when it came on, I just cranked it. It's one of those songs that holds a special place in my head and heart.
Love this song, heard it for the first time years ago while driving and time stood still for those few minutes. Great performance of it that they did at Woodstock '94 as well...
My favorite and first song I ever heard from The Cranberries. It was playing in the train station at the end of Mission Impossible when I saw it in theaters. All their songs are so good, she puts you in a trance.
Damn, I love your reactions. You take the time to actually listen and digest the songs and all their wonderful nuances. You really do know how to keep great music alive! Thanks for all the great content!
My younger brother was the drummer in the band I had in the mid-60s. I was 17 and he was 15. He had a beautiful kit and the drum track on this song is the way I always wanted his to sound. It was close, especially the twin toms and the floor tom.
I just got here because I was looking up the songs in You’ve Got Mail. This is the song I wanted to know who sang it. The comments have educated me on the artist and the voice. A very ethereal voice and song. Stays with you. Thanks everyone!
Man I just want to say that watching you enjoy the music I've known for years makes me feel like I'm hearing it for the first time again!!! Thanks Jamel!!!
I've been listening to this since it came out and I'm still stoked, baffled, and just simply blown away every single time I hear this song to this day.
As others have mentioned, that wailing kind of singing is called Keening in Ireland. There are similar types of vocals in scandinavian music, Swiss (yodelling) , Portuguese (fado) and even native American. Loved your reaction ...the drums , guitar and oh my that bass. But there is no doubt Delores vocals are what made it a classic
I agree with you Jamal, I prefer this Dreams too, so dreamy. My favourite Cranberries song is PRETTY. Also from this same album. It's a short song but showcases her vocals beautifully. She passed at 47? In 2018
The song was used on an ad to visit Ireland. It was also used in a couple of moviee, You've got mail, being one of them. Probably my favourite song by them. What a voice, sadly missed ....
I have to be honest. Your face at 1:23 had me in tears. It's when you see someone else appreciating her voice it all gets a little emotional. A fan from Ireland.
I LOVED her voice. My favorite was when she would do the Irish keen or lament. Incredibly beautiful. The adlibbing she does at the end is truly amazing.
Thanks for hitting The Cranberries! One of my favorite bands, it was so sad when Dolores left us. They had some great songs, and her voice was just phenomenal.
They're balm for the soul. So many great songs she gave to us. Masterpieces like When you're gone and Pretty. Not Sorry, Linger, Dreaming My Dreams, Daffodil Lament... Also good: Sunday, Empty, Liar, Ridiculous Thoughts, Cordell.
I saw The Cranberries 3 times in the mid to late 90s in London and each show was superb; her voice stunning, somehow both delicate and powerful on each occasion and the rest of the band were tight and on form.
Her voice is a perfect example of an Irish lilt I think it has something to do with the Irish accent. That yodeling is known as keening an Irish wailing often used during funerals as a form of grieving. Wow. Thanks for the insight. ✌️
Wow! I learned so much from your comment Paul! Thanks for educating me! 🙌🏼
When I hear her voice, It reminds me of my mother. My mother was from Ireland
For anyone who would like to see what I'm talking about regarding U2

@@oilrules4302 i'm sorry
Sadly, Dolores O'Riordan was but 46 years old when she left us. Gone too soon for sure. Her keening (sound of Irish grieving) still hits you straight in the heart even after almost 30 years.
Are you an Irish lass?
I think I’m doomed to discover people after they’re gone. Probably my favorite of theirs. Most people think of Zombie but Dreams is what The Cranberries is to me.
Yes really showcased the beauty in her vocals
Same. From the vocals to the drums - oh, my Lord, the drums - this is just a perfect and perfectly beautiful song.
@@laurabrevitz3944 the drums are epic 🥁❤️
@@GrainneScarlett Kept me in the car to listen to the end of the song on the radio. Absolutely wonderful, front to back.
I have never heard a cranberries song I didn't love.
Her voice was on another level. She broke through and had such a niche talent in a crowded 90’s rock scene. Amazing voice. She is sorely missed.
One of the best voices... It's absolutely angelic.
That’s one of the best songs I’ve ever heard what amazing voice she had
First time?
Loved how she layered her voice in this song. Plus she never lost her Limerick accent.RIP Delores, forever missed
Your smile when she started singing 😂
This song has that effect on people.
she had the type of voice that brings tears of joy to EVERYONE'S eyes. i dont care how tough or callous you are, her voice can reach you.
True celtic beauty.... the voice that takes you from the edge of childhood into adolescents right into full adult ....no one could ever replace Delores
Cranberries have a good amount of other hit songs as well. Don’t stop here with your Cranberries journey Jamel!
When You're Gone is so damn good, too
Dolores was such a talent, with an instantly recognizable voice. RIP Dolores.
She was incredible.
A truly unique voice, never to be replicated.
Beth Orton is pretty similar.........
There will never be another Dolores, one of a kind.
Glad to see you're getting around to more of the Cranberries. Would like to see your reaction to a couple more of theirs, Ode to My Family, and When You're Gone.
Great choices...
Yes! Ode To My Family is so good.
Love ode Tomy family
two of my faves
Ever since I was young, I always pictured her voice being what angels sounded like. Don’t know why, I just always got an angelic feel from her
Along with Lisa Gerrard...
Tienes toda la razón
Delores had such an amazing vocal range! It’s been four years since her death and she will be forever missed. 😢
Probably one of my favorite songs ever? I’m very impressed with many of their recordings and I always was from when I was a kid
Linger truly gets me and it’s beautiful
My favorite Cranberries song. Like a prayer.
"You're what I couldn't find
A totally amazing mind
So understanding and so kind
You're everything to me"
She had a beautiful voice. I remember when it first came out. It is still one if my favorite song.
So glad you see you react to this song. I've always liked the Cranberries, but this song is probably my favorite song of theirs. It's just so beautiful. Keening is a traditional form of vocal lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition, known to have taken place in Ireland and Scotland...
One of my favorite songs of all times. To me this song is perfection. It makes me smile but can also brings me to tears.

this damn song can bring me to tears, it always pops up at my most vulnerable time.
I used to drive around in my car playing this TAPE over and over again. (Yes, I said tape) 😂❤️❤️
I fell in love with The Cranberries the moment I heard Dolores’ voice. She will never be forgotten. I love all of their music but my favorites are “Pretty” and “Salvation”. Thank you for reacting to The Cranberries. RIP DOLORES. We will always love you.
👍👍The voice inflections on "pretty" are amazing. "Dying in the sun" is an amazing song too..♥️🙏👉🇺🇸
Ethereal is the word which describes this voice (for me). Best and only the best to you and yours!
That's exactly the word I use too to describe her singing. Sinead O'connor has the same gift
Yes! More Cranberries. Great follow up to Linger. Amazing reaction!
I also need you to do Ode to my Family from this group as well. such a gorgeous song!
The Cranberries were massive and this album was amazing.
I love watching you react to The Cranberries. You get this look on your face like you're listening to an angel sing. ❤❤

I mean Dolores' voice is always spectacular, but highly underrated in this song is the drumming.
LOVE. THE. DRUMMING. On all their songs, but this one in particular.
Yes thank you for pointing this out, the drummer is a true musician and artist for playing the way he did.
This song has stuck with my since I was a child. Amazing and takes you to another, beautiful and ethereal place!
Walked down the aisle to this song at my wedding.
We were certainly devastated. It was so hard to accept that this beautiful voice was no more. Her music was a huge part of my 90's.
Thanks for brightening my evening! Such a driving beat with Dolores' lilting. I loved this song from the first time I heard it. It's hard to believe this and "Linger" are almost 30 years old. Dolores was one of a kind. RIP
Thanks so much for the compliment to this song. I'm Irish so proud of this wonderful song. RIP
I love this song!! Thanks for reacting to it, Jamel. 😊
Soothing yet energetic, her voice is angelic and magnetic! Awesome song ♥️🎶
She had a beautiful voice. It’s so sad she never really got any cred. She was so underrated it’s not even funny. We lost one amazing voice….
One of my favorite Cranberries songs. It always reminds me of You’ve Got Mail.
I really love the Cranberries and Dolores RIP. Her voice is so good. Thanks for getting to more of them
And with that beautiful voice she is 'openly' pouring her heart here to the one she loves.
Always loved that Irish lilt in her voice. Made her stand out and it just catches your attention

There will never be another singer like her, you felt every single lyric deep within your soul! Every song beautiful and every song it’s own meaning
The drumming is so great on this song.

A very ethereal voice and song. Stays with you. Thanks everyone!
I feel so late. Didn't realize that this angel passed. Wept through this reaction. Truly, her voice continues to be spiritual 🙏🏿
I recommend listening to their first 2 albums (Dreams is on the 1st, Zombie on the 2nd) :)
Anytime I hear this song I have to stop wherever I am and thank God I have ears!
She was just one of a kind, wasn't she? And she wrote all of these amazing songs. Just my absolute favorite band🥰🥲🥲
Their Greatest Video Hits on dvd is one of my favorites to "watch" while I'm "listening" to music.
Man I just want to say that watching you enjoy the music I've known for years makes me feel like I'm hearing it for the first time again!!! Thanks Jamel!!!

God bless.
Her voice instantly melts even the hardest of hearts.
This song takes me back man, such a great band and song. If I had to choose a favorite cranberries song this is it, R.I.P DELORES 🙏
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Forget Zombie, this was my favorite song by them.
We lost a great one when she passed.
Watching it with you makes me appreciate the details more. Thanks Jamel.
As basic as these harmonies are, they touch the soul man, God what a beautiful song. Such an angelic voice, tears were starting to fall

I saw them live. She was amazing. Her voice was the REAL deal.
this song is always in my playlist ever since i was 10yrs old til' now.. its so captivating..
Her Irish lilt is absolutely perfect.
Love this reaction ❤️yes she was a very beautiful soul and had such a unique voice 💕
