Your nonchalant attitude toward the blackflies and too much water in the dehydrated meal is so typical of the guys I backpack with. All you can do is laugh and make the best of the situation. Love the drinking hot cocoa thru the mosquito mesh as it filters out the dead squitoes. Brilliant! You guys rock!
Haha, thanks a lot man! Hope you’ve been getting up to some good treks this past summer. I’ll have to swing by your channel soon! You would love some of the back lakes I visited in the Yukon on my recent trip. Arctic char, Grayling and lake trout fishing

Hey Jim, I really love your channel and have followed it for some time. Very surprised to see you burning plastic in a pristine area. I think you can pack that trash out without too much hassle, like putting it into "Smelly Proof" ziplocks, which should keep bears and other critters away. Even if the locals do burn trash in their villages, and yours gets incinerated there too, at least that prevents spreading pollution further afield.
There is nothing can hold back the smell even to us. A polar bear can smell a seal under the ice from one mile away. Speeding air pollution Farther afield is a as you put it is a nice thought but it doesn’t make logical sense. For example, the dump in Iqaluit was on fire for two years straight and they coldly out it out, that smoke blew to Siberia. Sudbury’s super stack creates acid rain on Holland as we speak. This is what is commonly done on Arctic canoe trips and other adventures like this. Even the rules in Algonquin park are “no non combustibles” when it comes to bottles and cans. I’ve tried to keep garbage like yours staying, in a food barrel and it reeked by the end of the trip and was a hazard.
I am loving this video. When you thought Ted was going to have a rough time and he casually canoed right past you. That was hilarious. Then when you were having your hot chocolate and having to sip it through your bug outfit. And you said it filters out the dead mosquitoes. I about spit out my sweet tea . Lmao . Thank you so much for all that you do to bring us awesome videos both of you. And thank you also for always making us Giggle . But them bugs. OMG . I couldn't do it.

Jim and Ted, how difficult it is to navigate through the Arctic, very complicated with so many rocks, that must exhaust them but it is still an adventure. Have a good trip 👍❤️🛶🛶🧭🌊🌬️
Stunning weather. Love the demonstration of how to have a meal wearing a bugsuit. I've had many a meal under a rain poncho in the pouring rain while hiking in the Rockies, but dealing with the mesh is a whole different level!
I've seen Ted rock the bug jacket several times. I don't recall seeing Jim wear one, though maybe my memory is failing me. But the bugs must have been absolutely atrocious for Jim to suit up! The rocks suck for canoeing, but that cold clear shallow water is some awesome scenery/fishing!!
What a slog thru all those rocks and low water. Twelve hours wow! You must've been exhausted. Looks like the fishing was good, as well as the weather. (but not the black flies) Great video! Always good to see one of your videos pop up.
Thanks for checking it out. Ya, it was discouraging to have been trudging in for so long and yet have made it hardly any distance. Still, we were rewarded with that amazing campsite.
The first artic river we did was in late July it was like this river verly low. A few years later we did it again in early June water was high. We did one river out of Mckenzie Mountains in early September and water was like spring run off as it was snowing in the mountains and milting during the day. There were areas that were big rapids that during the summer would have been ripples. We used inflatable canoe and inflatable double sea kayak. The material was extreamly durable. We had no punctures and I atribuate it to the boats were flexable and rolled over the rocks. You are doing well. We hated the bugs.
@@JimBairdAdventurer Natala/Keel in September. We flipped once we wear wet suits and paddling jackets. Hope River water levels were low and Great Bear River was normal. We have been trying to do Slave River for 2 years but water levels have been low. We did Soper on Baffin twice. At low water you bump over a lot of bolders. At high water class 2 to almost class 3 rapids for short sections. Bugs were very friendly. We as you noted wind gets rid of bugs. Your presentation is very good. Like the cuts to food prep.
I remember twenty five or more years ago reading about traveling the Yukon and north from cliff jacobsons books. One I remember he was traveling with Gordon lightfoot. It’s so much more beautiful than I’d pictured reading. It sounds so barren, and I’m sure parts of it are, but it’s still incredible to look at.
You could repack your food in disposable Ziploc paper bags. I didn't know there was sealable paper bags until a few weeks ago but the ones I bought held up to the task of a weekend.
Would rather have had a spoon with a Five of Diamonds pattern that big as it’s better for lake trout but I didn’t have time to source one and that’s all they had in the way of massive spoons at the local bait and tackle store.
i'm curious: how do you determine which fish to keep and why you let the other ones go? They all look fantastic to me. I've learned so much from watching your adventures!
