I personally think the best period was the romantic period with Liszt, Chopin or early romantics like Schubert...later post-Wagnerian impressionist French composers Satie or impressionists like DeBussy.
That is so brilliant an observation. I was trying to figure out why this was so "different". Also I had no idea that Nick Rhodes wrote "Too Shy" for Kajagoogo.

I don't wanna sound like a dick and I feel terrible saying so bc i LOVE DD, but sometimes I catch myself thinking that "So Red The Rose" is even better than most albums DD released, bc they just don't flow the way this one does. And it has so much more depth, I don't know how to explain. Sad as it may be, another So Red The Rose would not have happened as producer Alex Sedakin died in a car crash afterwards while he was in progress with the Thompson Twins project that included his version of "Lay Your Hands On Me"--the Twins were another band which had very flowing sounds--Quick Step & a Side Kick then Into The Gap (the ending of that album was sublime. @@Маргарита2003that's not the point, music is deliberately thrown at people without being asked for. I used to work in radio and played the music I wanted not the music that society wanted me to listen to.
The Arcadia project was a brilliant piece of work--the best Duran album never made by the band. A quirky piece of art in both the music and the album's artwork--comes close to a Rio cover as any does. If John and Andy Taylor let themselves be a part of the project along with Grace Jones, David Gilmore, and Sting plus many more of great contributors--the album would have been way ahead of the time considering how many artists now appear on songs (adding nothing near to this). With Arcadia so much was added with the collaborations, like Sting on "The Promise"---his voice harmonized with Simon's perfectly. So Red The Rose is the perfect fit between Seven and the Ragged Tiger and Notorious. In fact, I believe that "A View To A Kill" owes much to Arcadia's sound more than just adding John's brilliant bass and Andy's gifted guitar work to it. "A View To A Kill" is the most popular of the Bond themes and the most successful. Think of "Election Day" with Andy's rhythm guitar and John Taylor working with Sting on the bass. Sadly this was one of producer Alex Sadkin's (who also helmed Seven and the Ragged Tiger) last projects before his fatal accident--his last production gig was with Thompson Twins "Lay Your Hands On Me" the original UK single version. Funny that Duran worked with Nile Rodgers on "A View To A Kill" and the album Notorious and also worked with TT on the album Here's To Future Days which was to be a Sadkin production. Take the b-side to "Union Of The Snake", "Secret Oktober" as an omen to So Red The Rose---only Simon picked out a piece of poetry from his notebook, then Nick and he worked it out with Alex as the rest of the band had left Australia and the label wanted a non-album b-side. "Secret Oktober" is one of my favorite Duran b-side of all time.
Ha! I watched a video about forgotten 80s songs and it was this. My comment was " damn they trying to rip of Duran Duran". How in the hell did I miss this???
Grace Jones is still one of the Greatest Music Icons of all time. In 1978 she invited Bernard Edwards & Nile Rogers of Chic as her special Guests at Studio 54 and they weren't allowed in. They were so angry they went home and wrote a "F@ck You!" type of song which of course would later be Le Freak. In later years Nile Rogers would later work with Duran Duran after Andy Taylor & Roger Taylor left. In the UK his music still resonates. On Popstars 2 The Rivals The Female Contestants sang We Are Family, Steps a Co-Ed Group did Everybody Dance, as did Kimberely Walsh of Girls Aloud.
I dont know if it is but it should be. The video is actually distracting given how great the song is, and the album is too. I do think Duran never surpassed the amazing art-punk goodness of their first album, but they came closer with this than Rio, no matter what those who like their sugarier stuff say.

Saw where Simon L. recently purchased this LP at a independent record store because he was so proud of this project and always wanted to own it.
1985 (I was 17; guy I was with was 16): First time I ever EVER heard of this song and Arcadia was coming home late night from a movie…one guy was driving while I was making out with a former boyfriend in the back seat…and this was the first song coming from the car speakers! We were both already HUGE DD fans, so talk about icing on the cake! Loved the album ever since; also have the vinyl for it! GREAT TIMES!!!
Usually, the ads copied the successful music videos. And remember, commercials were made by many of the same directors who made the music videos. It was good money those days. Probably still is, more so.
Just discovered this video last week. The 1980s were a great time for videos and only now have I learned that this was maybe the best. The song is out and out magnificent, and you're right, nobody writes 'em like this anymore. Extra stars for Simon Le Bon's dancing.
Thanks so much for this, back in my day this was so awesome.Having to wait for hours waiting to see this video on MTV. Now you just press a button, LOL!!!
Strange how after 30+ years this album is back in heavy rotation in my car. The first 4 songs on this album are excellent - the rest is good but I have to be in the mood for it.
