Guys, be easy on her. Keep in mind, in addition to the language barrier, that if it weren't for her asking those ridiculous questions we would never have seen Kurt's priceless reactions to them; in short we would have never been able to enjoy this unique article of hilarity.
The French cognate for 'pretend' -- prétendre -- can mean 'profess' or 'say.' In effect, she is asking him whether he calls what he does 'modern jazz,' but she is confused about the meaning of 'pretend' in English. Why she feels comfortable bad-mouthing Berlin (other than French anti-German sentiment because of the World Wars and many previous ones), I don't know.
weskoki Possibly, but that doesn't fit what she was saying. Probably she was fooled by a false cognate, as I suggested. It happens quite frequently when one is speaking a foreign language.
Maybe because she is an unashamed "bourgeoise" totally out of control? only in our sweet France. thankfully we have other (better) "things" than miss DoorKnob
Orangelo I also thought the questions were good actually. Most people don't know how this music works and I think she's asking questions that people want to ask but probably are too afraid to ask. :)
As an interviewer myself, I gotta say that Kurt really showed a lot of class and respect towards the interviewer. Props to him for being kind and patient. @menitrust @louisCole
Well, this TV-channel obviously sent an interviewer who doesn't have the ghost of a clue. Not about music, not about jazz, not about Berlin and not about the english language.
i really really wonder what's going through his mind right after she tells the 'you pretend to play modern jazz?' question... his face at this moment is the best expression of incredulity i've ever seen... :) and he also seems to be deciding 'do i leave now or do i stay?' or maybe 'is she trying to make fun out of me, or is she completely stupid and doesn't know anything about jazz'. the fact that he decided to stay doesn't speak in favor of the interviewer
She makes a very common (and quite expected) mistake. Because her first language is French, she thinks “to pretend” means “to intend”, since the latter is the meaning of the French verb “prétendre”. Portuguese speakers tend to make the exact same mistake (I'm Brazilian btw), because in our case, to intend = “pretender”. But it is funny as hell lol.
I can see Kurt asking himself, "Is this a Borat thing?" But given that the interviewer knew very little about jazz, I guess she asked some interesting questions and got some interesting answers.
When somebody assumes that a person smokes a lot of weed just because they have a pale complexion, it's probably just because they themselves are a huge pothead. I highly, highly doubt Kurt smokes a ton of weed nowadays. He's a highly intelligent dude who is notorious for constantly working.
the interviewer is a cute french woman, in her defense, she was probably translating from "prétendre" asking "do you CLAIM to be a modern jazz guitarist?
This is why it is embarrassing ( SOMETIMES) to be French. She's got absolute confidence in having no clue, no English speaking capacity, and she's quite known anyway. Clueless "bourgeoisie" sounding vulgar. only in France!
Starting off with “You don’t feel Anything when you are playing??” is legendary
"You pretend to play modern jazz". Beam me up Scottie.
:D :D :D
Maybe she meant "you INTEND". I assume that because in portuguese the verb "pretend" means to "intend".
Yup: In french the verb "prétendre" means to claim, to affirm.
Guys, be easy on her. Keep in mind, in addition to the language barrier, that if it weren't for her asking those ridiculous questions we would never have seen Kurt's priceless reactions to them; in short we would have never been able to enjoy this unique article of hilarity.
True dat
Kurt just showed how amazing a human being he is. If I was in his place this interview would have lasted 30 seconds at the most
exactly! what grace and dignity!
Kurt handled this like a gentleman. Much credit to him...
Kurt was improvising during the whole interview )))
Well, he was pretending to be improvising 😅
"I can see, I can saw, I could see ... "
~ Sylvana Lorenz ( 2009 )
This is even more absurd than any of the "Between Two Ferns" interviews by Zach Galifianakis.
Rob Wolfe True hahahaahaaha
This interview still cracks me up😂😂😂😂😂
I have laughed like crazy to it 10 years agoo, I just played it again and it hasn't aged a day. It's absolutely hilarious haha
You dont feel anything when you play right ?...Yes,right ! great answer by K.R
Oh shit :D
oh, I just realized that she meant "you don't feel sun warmth when you play". Makes more sense still hilarious
Men I Trust brought me here
me too ❤😂
I am so happy for this rather unusual interview, 3:28 is such a strong passage! Kurt reacts with such humbleness and appears so likeable!
"We improvise... on jazz standards. We play the tunes and improvise on the tunes." "So what we heard today was improvisations?!?" LOL!
It's incredibile, because it was very melodic
I think she deserves her own TV show
One thing I learned from this interview is that Kurt loves to wear hats 🎩
Just watched this video and I learned so much about you Kurt.
Great video.
oh Man...the Lady is hilarious and a real Jazzexpert ! great to see that Kurt keeps cool !

She meant ''prefer'' i guess.

Anyway, Shes cow.
Maybe because she is an unashamed "bourgeoise" totally out of control? only in our sweet France. thankfully we have other (better) "things" than miss DoorKnob
Untrue, this is the exact same word in French, means the exact same thing.
As someone from France, I legit just discovered that today, and feel really ashamed. :'(
lol this is actually a really funny interview. Despite the language barrier, it wasn't that bad. I thought she asked good questions.
Orangelo I also thought the questions were good actually. Most people don't know how this music works and I think she's asking questions that people want to ask but probably are too afraid to ask. :)
'you don't improvise?'
kurt hears 'i don't know anything about jazz' and thinks 'who the fuck booked this interview for me?'
Poor Kurt, he keeps cool, like always.
this interview is comedy gold
This is the best thing I've seen in a while. hahahaha. So good.
Do you pretend to speak english?
Joao Fofes I laughed so hard for like five minutes straight!
She should have interviewed me. I pretend to play jazz.
When she said he pretends to play modern jazz I just lost it. :)))
It's terrible to live in Berlin hahahahahah she's on fire!!!
lol ! "Did you improvise?"
"I can see, I can saw, I could see.." My God..
Here because of Jessy from Men I Trust’s Records in my Life interview lol.
me too😂❤
As an interviewer myself, I gotta say that Kurt really showed a lot of class and respect towards the interviewer. Props to him for being kind and patient. @menitrust @louisCole
i love when people call drums "battery"
i think instead of "pretend" she meant "prefer" if you put this word in its place it all makes sense.
She probably meant "claim", "intend". Both are meanings of the french verb "prétendre". A common mistake for native Portuguese speakers too.
this is probably the most hilarious interview with a jazz legend ever hahaha
What's wrong with Berlin...?
Jackson Tru she’s French
Oh my good lord! Was it necessary to carry out this interview? :D
Kurt Rosenwinkle wears hats. You heard it hear first.
hhahaha this was the funniest jazz interview ever
@sramirezsoprano in latin languages (like portuguese, spanish or french), "pretender" means "intend".
Well, this TV-channel obviously sent an interviewer who doesn't have the ghost of a clue. Not about music, not about jazz, not about Berlin and not about the english language.

Best "Pretend-Interviewer" ever !
As a french i really feel sorry for This... but it was kinda funny 😆
I can see Kurt asking himself, "Is this a Borat thing?" But given that the interviewer knew very little about jazz, I guess she asked some interesting questions and got some interesting answers.
As the great Steve Martin would say: Embogah. Humberger. Eanbehrgah.
this interviewer is so killing
this is god damn hilarious
French "Prétend"= English "Claim"
Portuguese "Pretender" = English "Intend".
So you’re saying she asked “do you claim to play modern jazz?” Is better? Not by a lot.
Sometimes I have to watch this one lol
I think he was completely sober in this video. The interviewer was killing his brain, that was what you were seeing.
I can see I can so I could see it in your face
kurt: heu.... o.k
When somebody assumes that a person smokes a lot of weed just because they have a pale complexion, it's probably just because they themselves are a huge pothead. I highly, highly doubt Kurt smokes a ton of weed nowadays. He's a highly intelligent dude who is notorious for constantly working.
"I could saw it on your face" "Oh, ha, okay"
Personally, I just pretend to play classic jazz. I like modern stuff but it's usually way over my head.
yes max, she is
because it was the nice jazz festival he was obligated to be nice
Incredible! That seem a joke! Who send this interviewer?
this one's epic
Is this some sort of a spoof interview? I expecting to see Sacha Baron Cohen come around the corner at any moment :)
Totally Sacha Baron Cohenesque
"Back of the sun"?? Well, she is, for sure!
the interviewer is a cute french woman, in her defense, she was probably translating from "prétendre" asking "do you CLAIM to be a modern jazz guitarist?
This is why it is embarrassing ( SOMETIMES) to be French. She's got absolute confidence in having no clue, no English speaking capacity, and she's quite known anyway. Clueless "bourgeoisie" sounding vulgar. only in France!
Yeah also she called Berlin a terrible city while it's 10 times more interesting than Paris with nicer people. C'mon France...
This is hilarious!
Omg.
0:22 "you don't feel anything when you're playn"... That's preatty much the opposite, Kurt sayn "thats right..." such a genteleman XD
Hahaha!! God, I'm dying...
Kurt - "Am I on Punk'd?"
"Its been great"
Biggest lie ever
strange interview. its difficult when the interviewer knows not about the music.
Cunk on Jazz
what a weird interview. entertaining though
"Do you dream while you play?" I think we found the new Beato.🤣
"Guitarist but a compositor, too"
0:21 You don't feel anything when you play?
do you dream when you play? hahahahahaha
LMFAO THIS IS HILARIOUS
LOL !!!!
Apparently this is this interview's schtick.
Couldn't they find someone who understands jazz and speaks proper English to interview him?
sounds like she bribed her way to interviewing him hahahaha
@arnauddd No, I guess you´re wrong. I think he understood that she doesn´t speak english well and didn´t choose the correct word.
She did. It's the same word in French, it has the same meaning.
:)
It's ok, guys, she's french ;)
no habia una entrevistadora peor?
Is this real?
you don't feel anything when you play don't you ?
Is this a Sacha Baron Cohen character or something..?
This interview is hilariously uncomfortable.
He wears hats because he started balding in his early 20s. That’s the objective truth
Incredible how nice Kurt is with these dumb questions!
Hahahaha
Classic interview. It's like Spinal Tap level. Why do you wear the hat? You pretend to play modern jazz?
It is clear that the interviewer's knowledge on jazz music is close to zero 🙄
It gotta be some kind of joke right?
Berlin... simply terrible..LMAO.. i wonder if she meant to say terrific? guess not XD but kurt seems to be enjoying the interview
what ????Get another intervieuer
2:30
I already saw Kurt takin' the microphone and beat it on her head until she dies..
What the hell...
It was improvisation? Ahahahahahahah
It wasn't that bad
xD
