In this video, I talk about what Thrips are and how to get rid of them. Thrips are a common pest and enemy that can really harm your dragon fruit plants if not taken care of and controlled right away. They will keep your plants from being able to grow buds, flower, and make fruit. You definitely want to get red of them. I use spinosad because it's the only treatment I've found to work completely.

Outside on my balcony, I am sure there are some. But there are kinds of insects. All plants grew records heights and nice yields, so I dont mind. And none of the tomato or pepper pods have any damage/bite marks. As long as my stuff is not damaged, I tolerate breakdancing cows or goats doing their yoga thing.

As soon as I saw this video I went to check my Rainbow, AX, and Desert King varieties. They’re newer cuttings that have been showing stunted growth and sure enough… they are present on all 3.

The reason I like simple pump sprayers is that there is less that can go wrong with them, and if something does go wrong with them, they are less expensive to replace. We all have our preferences.

If they build immunity to spinosad a & d it will not matter if you change to another bottle with another etiquette... They will be immune to the spinosad....

I would be interested in how you would treat rust on your dragon fruit! There’s a lot of ways that people suggest but sometimes as you said in dealing with thrips you need to consider a chemical fungicide. I also think people need to realise that even organic pesticides and fungicides are still as harmful to many beneficial bacteria, good insects and pollinators as chemical means are. We all need to be cautious even with using the organic versions. Food for thought!

Have you tried diatomaceous earth on the DF to kill thrips? It kills other insects and does not harm the plant or fruit.

I know BT is an organic recommendation for many pests with Spinosad reserved for hard body pests. Did you try BT?
Have you tried systemic inscecticide like imidacloprid etc during the offseason? Contact sprays havent worked for me
Ya, spinosad is good, easy to find in California. Good on aphids and all of the nasty garden worms. And you said it wasn't organic, but it is, accepted by the USDA National Organic Program.

no thrips on mine, I do have ants though, do you have any idea how to handle em? they're always eating the buds, new growths etc.

Diatomaceous earth is a great way to get rid of ants
Ants could be a sign there are aphids as ants like to farm aphids for the honeydew they produce. Or during hot summers ants look for pots to hide and live in for moisture
Are you talking about ants in your potted plants? I had a severe ant problem in my potted citrus plants and was told to lift the pot off the ground even just a small lift with 1/4" height with small rocks or tiles. I repotted the plants and put a lift under the (large) pots and the ants never returned. I now do this with all my large potted plants and no longer have an ant problem.
Have you researched or tried dawn dishwashing soap diluted with water? I use it as a non-toxic pesticide around the house.

I have noticed yellow jackets and hornets working my dragon fruit. I only have 2 fruit this year it is my first year for fruiting.. are they harmful to the fruit, should I be worried?
They are just eating the nectar and dew thats releasing from your dragon fruits. They don’t harm the fruits but may sting you so be careful around them.

I got some animals called "scale insect" on some winterhardy cacti. The only way to get rid of them is to "Mike Tyson" them, personally. And usually you dont want to have your hands too close to a spine kingdom...

I'm out in my garden like yourself, hand picking bugs all the time. Flea beetles, etc. I'm in Florida with high humidity so all kinds of bugs. Might you have RED Chrystal dragonfruit and is it self pollinated fertile? It's red flesh with high sugar content, 20 brics.

RUclipsr whether legit or not shows high brix numbers and beautiful red flesh. I don't know where the farm is, possibly Latin America or Asia. Red Crystal fruit.
Hey Richard, have you read anything on using nicotine sprays? I've heard that nicotine and the cholinergic compounds in tobacco, which I'm about to start growing, act as excitotoxins for most insects, basically like a cocaine OD would be for us.
