- Figured I'd upload a video detailing my steps to diagnose headlight issues for my 2011 Mazda 3, and replacing the Xenon bulbs and ballast. Learn from my mistake: test the components before you buy replacement parts!
Bulb spec: Phillips D2S Xenon HID
Ballast part number: BBM5-51-0H3

If y'all have any questions or concerns, please let me know in a comment, and I'll try to respond. Thanks!
I've watched several of these videos and this one is by far the most comprehensive. Thanks for detailing it.
Thanks! I’m going to be doing this exact process soon. The details here give me much more confidence!
Awesome video! Thanks for the tip👍🏽
Nice Job explaining this process.
Thank you God bless you are a blessing I was stressing about where the silver thing that you twisted so the bulb was visible Thanks a million
Thanks for the video. Best by far. My light just went out, and I do see water droplets inside. so I am hopeful the draining will help it.
I made a goof in this video, and had to do it over later. Turns out, my headlight had a small crack in the corner. I found it by removing the assembly, plugging all but one of the vent holes on the back, and then clamping a bike pump onto the remaining one, and pumping it up. You can use soapy water spray to find the leak, or just listen for it.
To fix it, I used permatex flowable glass sealant from autozone. Hope that helps!
@@evanc.1591 thanks. I will double-check it when I pull it out. I drive a far bit of gravel roads so it could be cracked.
But I wonder if there are vents, then should it really matter? Wouldn't it still breathe or have let humidity in? other way this will all help me save money.
Very very helpful. Dealer wanted $308 for just the bulb, and $589 for the ballast.
EBay brah
How do you test the balest? I'm not to sure how to use a voltage meter so a video or an explanation would be much appreciated.
I have a ‘14 CX-5 but I think it’s going to be similar. I’ll try swapping bulbs first.
Double check to see if there's any moisture there! If there is, you need to find the leak and seal it. That's a mistake I made in this video, caused the problem to recur. I'll be posting a follow-up soon.
Mine had a broken seal where the water is coming into the headlight and causing moisture and all that, but i can’t find where the leak is coming from and i don’t know how to re seal it
Turns out, mine had basically the same problem! The problem reappeared shortly after this when a bunch of moisture collected inside. I removed the headlight assembly again, and dried it thoroughly. I put it in some stacked up cardboard boxes, with a hairdryer stuck in the bottom. Closed it up, left it running for like 20-30 min until it was totally dry.
I then attached a bike pump to one of the open vents on the back of the headlamp, plugged the other ones, then pumped it up to get pressure inside it, and listened for a leak. Found a small crack in the bottom corner of the headlight, and sealed it with Permatex Flowable Glass Sealant, bought from AutoZone.
The new ballast had rusted up pretty bad, so I reassembled it with the original ballast that I pulled out in this video, and it worked! Turns out, the moisture had just temporarily shorted it, and it was fine once it was dried out.
Hope that helps!
@@evanc.1591 Wow thanks that really helps! I appreciate you explaining that super thoroughly.
wasbwondering where the bulb drivers where ....... I keep blowing fuses.
I have 2011 cx7 with halogen head lights.CAN I replace a used hid head light capsule to changecovetcto hid? Is the main connectors the same.? Please help Ty jeff
Helo, mine is flickering on one side, sometimes it even shuts down then i have to restart it and goes back, what can be the problem?
Mine has a grey plug in the middle also not like that one
What voltage should the harness be?
@TheMontoya760 If I remember correctly, should be 12V between positive and negative terminals. But check through the shop manual linked in the description, it has that info in there.
If u buy the cheap ballast….its only gonna last a couple months🤦♂️ better of buying a new one for $300 on autozone
thanks brub changed a light bulb worked
but now it happed again to a relatively and he said it might be the other parts
smh lol
