I have a question: why do factory-installed HID's don't take a while to warm up, they turn on as bright as they're going to be right off the bat, while the aftermarket ones take time to get the arc fully charged and give you light? why do they vary? aren't they supposed to be the same? By the way, thanks for sharing the knowledge. Great source of info, thanks Diode Dynamics.
Hey there - not sure exactly what you are referring to, as all HIDs (OEM or aftermarket) will have a warmup time. LEDs on the other hand do not have a warmup time, perhaps you were referencing that?
Factory HIDs warm up to full brightness MUCH faster than cheap aftermarket HID kits because the ballasts in the aftermarket kits are usually of sub-par quality compared to a factory ballast.
Do the D1 wires also work on the D3 bulb/ballast? Ford only sells one of the wires and I’d like to replace both wires that attach to each ballast since I’m replacing bulbs, ballasts and getting new OEM headlight assemblies that are made for my 2014 F150 with factory projectors. Help, I have a 2011 audi a5, my driver's side headlight bulb burned out. I learned I have a d3s xenon headlight- low/high beam bulb. I ordered a pair of DMEX d3s bulbs 6000k, oem replacement bulbs (made in china )and removed the headlight assembly , plugged in the newly purchased d3s bulb- and still headlight isn't coming on. The same warning light is still coming on dashboard-( low/high dipped beam ) out. Now the lights that were on the car were Philips Xen EcoStart D3s bulbs. ..made in Germany . I dont know if they are 4300 k, 6000k or what- I thought that must meant the color of the light. My state requires white, so I chose cool white 6000k. Do I need to replace with original brand bulbs ?- Philips Xen Eco Start? The connectors are the same on the cheaper DMEX...why isnt the light coming on ? Could it be the ballast? I feel like if it was a fuse then my passenger side would be out too. Also - ive read other threads where people say their lights were flickering etc , or became dim...mine did not. It was working, and then it died. That's it. Did I hurt something pulling the old bulb out ? Or hurt the new bulb somehow ? How do I know if it is the ballast ? What does “AD/ACor AF” mean in HID and is an D1S AD and D1S AC compatible
In the context of HID lighting, “AD/AC” or "AF" can refer to different types of ballasts or control gear used with the bulbs:
1. **AD (Alternating Direct):** This typically refers to ballasts that are designed to work with alternating current (AC) power but have specific functionality for HID systems. It's less common in terminology.
2. **AC (Alternating Current):** This refers to ballasts that operate on AC power. These are the most common types of ballasts used in HID lighting systems.
3. **AF (Alternating Current Frequency):** This could refer to a specific type of AC ballast that operates at a certain frequency, but it is not a standard term in HID lighting and might be a typographical error or a brand-specific notation.
Regarding compatibility between D1S AD and D1S AC ballasts:
**D1S:** This is a type of HID bulb with an integrated igniter, which requires a specific type of ballast designed for D1S bulbs.
**AD vs. AC Compatibility:** If "AD" refers to a specific feature or type of AC ballast, it could mean they are designed with some additional functionality or difference in design compared to a standard AC ballast. However, typically, the critical factor is that both are designed for AC power.
**Compatibility:**
If both ballasts (D1S AD and D1S AC) are intended for use with D1S bulbs and are designed to operate on AC power, they should generally be compatible with D1S HID bulbs.
Always check the manufacturer's specifications to ensure compatibility, as there can be differences in how the ballasts regulate power or interact with the integrated igniter in the D1S bulb.
To summarize, the critical compatibility factor is that both ballasts are designed for D1S bulbs and operate on AC power. If "AD" is a designation for a specific feature or functionality within the AC ballast category, it would still typically be compatible, but verifying with manufacturer specifications is always the best practice.

I'm a little lost on what type of Bulb I need.. I have a 2011 Mustang gt premium has factory HID. I can't find a clear answer on the type of bulb it needs, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hey there! Your Mustang should use a D3S size HID bulb!
www.diodedynamics.com/replacement-oem-hid-bulbs-for-2006-2014-ford-mustang-pair.html
The biggest issue that we have with these HIDs is their colour shades. I am struggling with Philips D4R 6000K bulbs...its so frustrating...they all have different blue shades when light up. Matching this is so frustrating
We understand your frustration! If you let them warm up for about 30 minutes to get them to operating temp, it should be much easier to match them up!
@@diodedynamics that won't help...even after 2hours the shade difference is visible...
I haven't had this issue with the Philips bulbs. Yes, the shades might be a touch different for a few minutes, but after that, they've ALWAYS been the same color temp once warmed up... 🤷
Hello, i have d8s bulb on suzuki baleno projectors. Is it the same with d2s, d3s, or the other?
Hi there! Unfortunately, we no longer offer headlight replacement bulbs. Sorry about that!
I got a 2015 Chevy Malibu with OEM hid bulbs and one already burn out..can you please send me a link where can I buy the bulb cuz the factory bulbs are too expensive..thank you
Hi there! Unfortunately, we don't offer OEM Replacements for your 2015 Malibu. However, we do offer plug-and-play HID Conversion Kits for them. You can check them out below!

Hi there! Is it the single or twin headlight option?
Hi 2013 srx caddy hid's...is that a D2s..projection light?

Great video, what would you recommend for a '19 Silverado (with crappy reflector housing H-11) as an upgrade?
Hey Jedd! Our H11 SL1 should be a great option for your Silverado, as long as you have a removable H11 halogen style bulb!

Hi
Can I use D4 on D2s headlight?
And which is better?
Hi there! With our OEM replacement HID bulbs, the output will be exactly the same on both sizes. We recommend using D2S bulbs!
I just buy a headlight for my car but the ballast is Hella D1SD1R and the bulb is D3S, is that OK ?
Your current is a D1S, and you ordered a D3S?
Is there an led replacement bulb for d2r bulbs?
Unfortunately, we do not offer this. Sorry!
I just buy a new headlight and it didn’t have bulbs and the old one don’t work on it h7 to new D2s what adapter I need
Hi there! You will need to source an H7 to D2S adapter to plug the new bulb into your factory harness. Unfortunately, we don't offer this adapter. Sorry!
I have a 2012 eclipse factory hid the problem is the headlight assembly is sh*t and Mitsubishi wants $650 per headlight assembly not happening can you tell me if I buy aftermarket headlight assembly can I just splice the 3 wires ? Or do they make a jumper wire harness that you can plug factory harness in one end and H13 stock or aftermarket hid in other please help ?
Hmm - we do make a size H13 HID Conversion kit for your 2012 Eclipse. We don't offer an adapter wire for this purpose, but if you can find an aftermarket OE replacement housing made for an H13 bulb, this kit may still work.
Diode Dynamics - I bought the aftermarket headlights they came w h13 bulb autozone sold a 3 wire adapter to splice will that work ?
@@dannyschmidt9058 Hmmm- we're not sure. You could always reach out to our service team at contact@diodedynamics.com with some pics, and they can help you look!
How important is the ground wire for the bi xenon kit
You must establish a ground.
Won't work without it
Can i use h7 hid bulb in d1s headlight assembly
Unfortunately, only a D1S size bulb will fit in a D1S assembly.
My 2010 Buick Lacrosse has HID headlamps. The driver's side is noticealy dimmer, almost a yellow color versus the passenger side which is a bright white color. There is no condensation in the headlight assembly and no corrosion anywhere on th
HID head lamps loose power over time. When this happens they will dim like you are referring to. It may just be time to replace them!
Wrong color temp bulb in that side, a ballast going out, or bulb starting to fail. One of these 3 scenarios
Which is the replacement for d5s i can buy??
Unfortunately we don't have a D5S HID replacement option at this time. Sorry about that!
The D5s bulb doesn't need ballasts, right?
That's correct!
I currently have a single d3s hid bulb that works for both high and low beam. If i replace it with an h11 led bulb will it work fine?
Hello! If you have an OEM D3S bulb, you will not be able to convert over to H11 - sorry!
Will not fit in housing
soo if headlights take d1.. Can i swap it out for D3?
We only recommend replacing a D1 bulb with a D1, since D3 bulbs have different voltage requirements.
www.diodedynamics.com/replacement-d1s-hid-bulbs-pair.html
I have a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe with OEM HID D3S bulbs. I would be able to run your 8k replacement bulbs without any issue correct?
Yep! They will be a direct replacement!
@@diodedynamics perfect, thank you for the fast response.
@@GoMango_Scat_392 you're welcome!
Are D1S and D1R interchangeable?
Hi there! They typically have the same size ballast and bulb, however, they are designed for different applications. Although, they do offer offer D1S/D1R bulbs where both fit, most D1S are designed for projector housings, while most D1R are designed for reflector housings. We offer size D1S!
Thanks
Guess I misunderstood...bought D3S lamps thinking they were interchangeable with D1S lamps...THEY ARE NOT...the connector is not the same...shame on me
Best upgrade for the HID, ditch them and go with a LED conversion.
No, definetely no.
I am not convinced.
HID is outdated these days. And this video explained why! IT'S JUST TOO MUCH, especially when you can get an LED and just plug and play.
I still like HIDs MUCH better than LEDs. They're not "outdated", HID technology is STILL used all OVER the place today. Not EVERYONE likes the very narrow color spectrum of an LED.
Lol theres really not much to it... led can easily become problematic... HID is the better option for many reasons
HID is definitely superior in many ways. LED has some unique advantages though. As does halogen. Every technology has its pros and cons.
