She, Queen Latifah, Salt N Pepa, MC Lyte & Nikki D were my idols growing up. As a pre-teen I didn’t realize it but I now look back and see that these women were teaching me self love and self respect. Thanks ladies!!!!
Monie was the second female rapper to be nominated for a MTV Video Music Award for this video in 1991. Neneh Cherry was the first for the best new artist for Buffalo Stance in 1989. Monie love however was the first female to be nominated in the rap video category. She, neneh, and other females during late 80 and 90s are ground breaking.
Queen Latifah?? Yeah she's in the closet... Like Will Smiths punk f*gg0t ass. Many others artist and actors are in the closet. Research.. Who found Latifah and Will? Quincy Jones full on flamer...
Pfftt.. You're not doing enough research, man. Trust me when i say this, there's definitely some music out there that can compete woth classics. Blessings.
Found this CD at a flea market. Played the hell out of it. Sorry to my family and neighbors back when this flew out of the speakers. Loud! Over and over.
I was born in 1991 but I always wish I was a teenager back then to fully enjoy this music. this track kills anything out today monie love real music great artist and rapper old school rap new jack swing is all I listen too
Riaz Amod I agree! Music today doesn’t compare with the music back in the day!Music today is garbage! I was born in 1992 and I wish music was still like this! Unfortunately, it isn’t! Our generation don’t know what real music is! On top of that some of our generation think this music is wake or lack understanding that this is how music suppose to be! The truth is the reason why our music went to the left because the original person who own B.E.T gave it to the Jews!😞 I don’t know why our people give everything away of the things we create! That clearly shows we don’t value ourselves as a people, and feel that we need other races to do the job for us, or get permission from them or be appreciated by them instead of appreciating ourselves ! They expose it on the show call the boondocks and the name of that show is; B.E.T had a meeting; it’s on RUclips! It gets more deeper, we use to own a lot of stuff and our people built America; look up the black Wall Street in Tulsa Oklahoma!
THIS is the version I remember. I had no idea till today that there were two versions of this song. This is one from my late nights staying up as a teen LOL!
Well said fam. This song is kicking and I was 13 when the Spinners sang It's a shame on 1970 and I was 22 when Sister Sledge made "He's the greatest Dancer" in 1979. This song as you said is a great combination of the two. I applaud you for even knowing whom made both.
As soon as I find the right people to produce this sort of sound .. and work with my sisters, friends, family and I... This will be back. I looooove this so much.
YES!! I used to go around for years singing that hook "It's a shaaaaaaame, the way you're messing around with my heart. It's a shaaaame, the way you HURT me". It still comes to mind when dealing with certain males not worthy of me anymore. I LOVE THIS SONG.
this was my favorite song when i was kid , i used to love this song ... :-' ).. ITS A shamm-eee , the way you mess around with my HEART . ...monie love , queen latifah , lauryn hill ... smh
Memories of feel good music hanging out with my friends at the basketball court and dancing in my room like a fool when this would come on the radio 😂 damn I miss the 90s
I was born in 1983, and I grew up with all older sisters and cousins, so I was introduced to music like this, the first Chronic album, Snoop, Pac, Biggie, Bone, Three Six Mafia, Queensbridge, I mean it was all around. My first real girlfriend was when I was 10 or 11 and we loved each other, and we skated all the time in Allentown at Route 100 Skate. I will never forget those days.
OMG!!! I'm sooo gettin my lyfe right now....Loving every minute of it too, can't wait to watch the "BUDDY" video next, then De La Soul "Saturday" and I'm good till I find something else. Thanks fa da post lady(in my creep show voice for those who remember that)!!! lol
@Austin Edwards Hip-hop???? It's house music and a little rap - hip-house music. That's what it was called. Don't crap on great oldskool house music. Hip-hop is one of the worst styles of music ever made.
Every detail of this song and video makes me laugh, has deep meanings! Cute American teenage kid.. at limelight at the end! Oh yes, she is definitely a Star, mocks both at men and women.. it's a shame hahahaha!!! Love it
Productions was so much stronger back then. Music has a soul to it and it wasn't just about just making money. It was about what I can contribute to the culture. I miss those days so much.
wow, nice! i know this song since i was a child, from my white mother ^^ She always played it, when she wanted to had a little time for herself and felt good.. (^^,)
Monie Love is beyond awesome & this song was/IS beyond awesome! Classic. Truly one of my favorite songs (all genres) of all time. Monie's so talented, vibrant, vivrant (as qtip might say), sexycool before TLC and beautiful. Mmmph. My only question on this post is at the very end when they segue into the next song with all the dudes sitting on the stoop with what looks like Fab5 Freddie - what's that song!?!?!?
I was 7 when this came out but i remember this and the original version. I'm glad i had older siblings who put me on to this in my younger days. I remember watching Video Music Box (all my NY/NJ peeps know) with my sister growing up, so i was exposed to Hip Hop/R&B at a young age. It was a fun time in music then, but in actuality the streets was crazy cause this came out during the peak of the crack era.

Truth!
....And what about TLC, JJ FAD, L'Trimm, The Wee Papa Girl Rappers and Cookie Crew?👊😎🤟

We definitely grew from what we learned in the 90s! Great decade to live through as a pre-teen and teenager
The 90's was the best era for R&B and Hip Hop. So glad to have lived as a teen during that time. Music today doesn't even come close.

Rap music at its best! The 90ties: Monie Love!!!
I love this song since I was a little kid. The heavy 90s beat and nice 90s saxophone in rap music made it sound classy.

This is a great early 90s song. For a while I didn't know it sampled from "It's A Shame" by The Spinners. Now I do!
Right. I had to look it up, that hook was so familiar. ❤

Yes! Real hip hop.
Two questions: Could Monie Love be any more adorable? Could this song groove any harder? The answer to both is no.
MONIE LOVE FOR THE ONE TIME!!!!
See this is why classic hip hop is better. Because it took throw back jam and gave it new life for the next generation to enjoy.
Damn. This version GOES HARD too.
VW DT original tongue twista!
Hot Throwback!!!!
Aw hell, now I gotta have a throwback kinda day!

So much fun. I think her band is polished.

Anyone else here after watching marriage boot camp hip hop edition? I'm like this can't be the same Monie Love 🙌🏾
Really, 58 thumbs down? The fuck is wrong with you all? It's a positive, fun jam from the old school. Sorry she's not mumbling or singing about ZANAX.
