Zatoichi is great!
Back in '70s we had tons of Japanese and Chinese movies in our Cinema.
Then beginning of the '80s suddenly all was cancelled.
All we watched from then on were USA Cowboy movies and Hollywood movies in general.
Even learning Cyrillic writing, language was practically forbidden over night and we had only a choice between English and German.
If you learned something else, you had to cancel it.
I am really glad you're sharing this and other movies. I always enjoyed movies from the east part of the planet.

Great actor. He died of cancer at 65 in 1997.
Edo Period was 1600s to mid-1800s.
The most talented swordsmen would go on musha shugyo, a form of pilgrimage that would take them around the country to challenge the best fighters they could find to a duel.
These were not usually officially fights to the death but to die in defeat was far from uncommon.
Life was cheap.
