  • @AnneEWilliamson
    @AnneEWilliamson 5 лет назад +71

    I completely agree about the gender power trope! I find it simplifies things too much. Even back in history, when men held the titles, often times the power behind the thrown was a woman (just look at Augustus Caesar's wife Livia Drusilla, who pretty much ruled Rome in everything but name when her son Tiberus was on the throne--there's a few Chinese female empresses who did the same). Power is never a simple thing, and when a fantasy book breaks down complex issues into basic stereotypes, it bothers me so much!

    On the gender skew thing. This is why I love STORMLIGHT. The way Brandon handles the male-female societal roles is brilliant. Each is good at one thing or another, with many who overlap or at least attempt to. It's far more dynamic and interesting than just the basic "x rules over y".

    • @WhitneyDahlin
      @WhitneyDahlin 5 лет назад +8

      Yeah that's because that's how it is in real life. Men are hard wired to be good at certain things and women are hard wired to be good at certain things.

    • @janhavi1977
      @janhavi1977 5 лет назад +4

      @@WhitneyDahlin Agreed. There are certainly exceptions, but on an average men and women do have specific differences. For example, men tend to be more inclined towards math, mechanics, and engineering fields. Women tend to be inclined towards life sciences or social sciences. Of course, there are exceptions. But on a general level women seem to be migrating towards areas like, biology, psychology, veterinary sciences, nursing, etc.
      The Stormlight Archive portrays this perfectly, with men and women working together as a team, rather than against each other.

      I felt Sanderson took ancient Japanese culture and flipped it on its head with the writing thing. In ancient Japan, women weren't allowed to read and write Kanji(the mens language) but were allowed their own abbreviated version, Katakana I think. Which was similar to storm light as men could only read glyphs.

    • @AldrichLukes
      @AldrichLukes 5 лет назад +5

      @@Fabierien no flipping. Katakana (glyphlike, angular strokes) was men's and hiragana (flowing, curvy strokes) was women's. nothing was flipped.

      I'd add to that Interview With a Vampire, because Rice was always better at scenarios than she was at writing them out, and the movie cut out some pretty dull passages. And Darkly Dreaming Dexter, which was the basis of the first season of the show, Dexter, which improved significantly on the source material, though it had the advantage of time, since a show season can include more than an average novel.

    I totally agree that the gender ruling is so overdone. It does feel lazy, because it's like the author is taking an easy route to add depth and meaning to their book. I've noticed this especially in YA (not hating on YA, there are some great books out there). There doesn't seem to be much nuance to the discussion in the books. It's a conversation that has happened many times, and I think the reason you might be tired of it, is because most people are aware that sexism is wrong. So, it feels like the author is preaching to you by beating a dead horse. Basically, I'm tired of this war of men against women, lol.
    Also, absolutely agree on The Picture of Dorian Gray! I can see why it might bore some people, but I loved it! :)

    • @evies.1018
      @evies.1018 5 лет назад +1

      I feel like a lot of gender ruling is trying to do the whole “look what it would be like to be X in a society ruled by Y as opposed to being Y in a society ruled by X!” but that premise can definitely backfire horribly and be very offensive (like Saving Eden or the pearls or whatever that one was called)

    I heard you’re getting into manga and that really cool to hear as there are a lot of great options out there. My two suggestions would be Made in Abyss (the best adventure out there as the setting is a deep chasm that gets more horrifying as the cast wanders down into its depths with no hope of return) and Houseki no Kuni (a very philosophical one that has amazing art, but will be an interesting read guaranteed. Golden Kamuy can scratch that itch of historical fiction if you so choose though.

      Merphy Napier no problem! It’s always nice to see people embracing a new medium like manga, and the community growing is nice since that and comics used to be for people that were lame just a few years ago. A lot of people in this both communities but as much as they can, but volumes for manga aren’t always translated beyond fan translated scans, so apps like MangaZone! (The best quality fan translations you could possibly get and the most amount of manga in one place) are good until the physical released come out months later. American comics can be bought as soon as possible, so ComicBox (the only place to get American comics for free that isn’t a library app. Also gives you fan translated manga) is pretty frowned upon unless you don’t have the money.

    Food for thought (I ran into this in my 20s when all I did is read) ... I think if you're constantly reading new books it's possible to get tired of EVERY trope. Tropes are just tools, after all. It's like if you see enough new houses, maybe you'll get tired of brick exteriors. The more you read the more you'll see these tools being used and its just human nature to get tired of the repetition. I dunno, just something to think about. When this happened to me I got over it by doing nothing but revisiting old favorites and reading nothing new for six months or so.

And there are def some that I don't care for in general - but I also know that's just a preference thing

    If you want to get more into historical fiction I suggest Bernard Cornwell, especially his Warlord Chronicles which ia a trilogy on King Arthur like none other.

    Historical fiction book that is absolutely amazing in my eyes: The War that Saved My Life. I think its more middle grade/young adult but the story is really good. Without spoilers its about a girl who has a twisted foot, and her mother abuses her and doesn't let her go outside ever. Meanwhile her little brother, her only friend, is allowed to walk around as he wishes. When all the kids are getting taken out of London at the beginning of World War II. The brother is allowed to leave but the girl is not. So they sneak out and they go with the other kids to the country side. There they get taken in by a woman who is kind of in a bad place. She misses her best friend who died and basically has lost all meaning to life if I remember correctly. But the story is not about the war, but about Jamie and Ada (the two kids) growing to trust their new guardian and its just a beautiful story. Oh and Ada loves horses so that adds to my enjoyment XD.

    Ahhh, but some historical fiction is so great. If you haven't, check out Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. So enjoyable.

    Your tropes your tired of was Shcokingly similar to mine! I was just thinking before you answered. It's not exactly like yours but lately when shopping for books I pick one up and it's a female protagonist about doing things she shouldn't bc shes a female or something and I just drop it. I mostly just stick to male protagonist at this point bc most I've run into dont have this issue. (Granted I'm a Male so my opinion can be skewed)

    You're scaring me! Sazed is the only character I love in Mistborn and I've read the first two volumes - getting ready to read the third one. I really don't want Sanderson to spoil everything for me. If he ends up ruining Sazed, I can literally say I hate the series - and I don't want to hate it!

    Aaah, I love The Picture of Dorian Gray and I don't typically like classics. Yes, there is that one filler chapter about jewels and carpets and whatnot, but it's a book you love because it makes you hate.

    If you're a fan of fantasy you really should read The Cousin's War series by Philippa Gregory. It's historical fiction, but I think it's really easy to follow if you read a lot of high fantasy!

    Malazan is a great fantasy series with gender equity. Especially since it's so casually approached. All too often when authors attempt gender equity in their books they make a big deal and showing of it, which only ends up highlighting how its being written as if that wasn't the given norm of their imagined world.

    The conversation about gender rule reminds me of Wen Spencer, who I read a lot of about a decade ago. Most of the books I read, which wasn't everything, weren't in that category, but "A Brother's Price" was, and it made a big impact on me at the time because it was both a fantasy novel and a romance, which isn't my jam. But I loved it. And I felt like it did a way better job than anything else I've read of justifying a society with extreme disparity in gender rights.

    Least favourite trope, "love triangle" or what should be called love arrow. Triangle have 3 sides. If I ever wrote a love triangle I'd effing make each one love the other person. A loves b, b lives ç and c loves a.

    Have you tried the Temeraire series by Naomi Novak? I believe you would call it historic fiction, it’s about the Napoleonic wars but with Dragons. Specifically a very sweet and inquisitive dragon named Temeraire.

    I loved Sazed's whole arc, I don't think he was overdone and I never found it boring or overly repetitive, I felt bad for him was cheering him on the whole way through. To me, it felt like Sanderson was really exploring his themes by making him question everything he believes in. And the twist with him at the end was genius.

    For historical fiction someone mentioned the pillars of the earth by Ken folllet amazing, I would recommend also the feast of the goat from Mario Vargas Llosa. Inés of my soul by Isabel Allende. The fencing master from Arturo Pérez Reverte. And the bridge on the drina by Ivo andrić

    Thank you ! It’s fantasy; we can create whatever types of social structures we want... can’t we just write worlds where gender doesn’t determine the power dynamic and it’s not a big deal? I feel like it’s often used as a cheap source of conflict, when more interesting conflicts could be explored instead. One fantasy series that doesn’t lean too hard on gender based power dynamics is The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. There are powerful women; there are powerful men; there are lower class women ; there are lower class men; and everyone is focused on conflicts that don’t concern gender.
