There are so many books you hate the ending to, can you do a list where you recommend books that you love the ending?
Oh that's a good idea!!
Yes, I agree. If someone tells me they didn't like the ending, then I don't consider that a recommendation at all, I consider it a warning! lol
I'd like to see a video on books whose ending ruined the whole book. Like the book Claws. It's a 350 page book about these two middle schoolers who end up trapped in the middle of the forest in Canada and they have to struggle and survive and work and in the last three pages a search helicopter finally sees their fire after a month and he picks them and as the helicopter is taking off and flying away it crashes and kills everyone. The end. I f**king HATE this book. You can tell the author just got tired of writing the story and ended it. Ugh I read that book ten years ago and it still makes me so angry.
Whitney Dahlin Are you a book purist? If not, just white out the ending after they’re rescued and have the book end there. 😁 And if you’re a book purist, just end the book where they’re rescued and forget the white out. Lol.
Usually I like endings to books but one that really blew was mistborn book 3
I love how The Lies of the Locke Lamora is suggestively leaning forward in the background...
He must be meantioned in every video!
@@merphynapier42 OMG I've just started watching your videos and not only I've already bought it but I feel kind of guilty of having lived in this OBLIVION for so long and now I'm preaching about it to friends to see if anyone has read it... I'm still waiting for it to arrive so I have to keep skipping forward everytime you mention it to avoid spoilers! Also I dont remember knowing about Robert Jordan's work until a couple of weeks ago when you mentioned in one of your videos so I've got a lot of catching up to do.
The cover of East gives me some Golden Compass vibes.
I recommend it if you loved His Dark Material's
@@Orange_684 I actually can't remember if I loved Dark Materials! The only thing I can remember from it are those weird things from the 3rd book that have wheels for feet or something like that
I can't remember either but I remember the feeling while reading them. East shares that feeling.
I strongly recommend The Emperor's Soul, by Brandon Sanderson. Whenever people talk about Sanderson they talk about Mistborn and Stormlight, but I feel like this little novelette is amazing and it only takes a few hours to read. Go read The Emperor's Soul if you haven't already.
This is my favorite Sanderson book of all time!
So many books to look into. My to-read list grows exponentially because of your videos 😭
Great video! Love the variety. Rebecca is one of my all times favourite. It has one of the most famous opening lines. Although the end is good, my biggest enjoyment was the middle of the book. One of the most frequent gifts i give.
Close enough to touch sounds interesting.
I love East!! I‘m studying to be a professional flutist and most of what I remember from reading this in middle school loving how integrated the flute was into the story. Definitely one of the quintessential books that made young me fall in love with fantasy. Apparently a sequel came out a couple years ago called West (of course lmao).
Can you do a video about the best siren/mermaid books!
I would love to but the truth is that I haven't read many that I've loved at all!
Merphy Napier I’d enjoy a overall mermaid wrap up as well. You know - what you loved about a book and what not.
Because very often I will pick up a book you don’t love, because I enjoy it for exactly the thing that you disliked. :)
It sounds strange, but it’s really helpful :)
I'm currently reading Into the Drowning Deep and I was SO excited when you recommended it! It's such an "edge of your seat" story!
Into the Drowning Deep is the book for my book club with my sister and friend this month. It's been on my list since you originally wrapped it up so I'm really looking forward to it after this refresher 😊
Love El Deafo - so glad you included that one!
I picked up An Unkindness of Magicians last year on your rec, and it was one of my favorite books of 2018! I’m waiting longer to re-read it so that I can immerse myself again, but I’m already so stoked to read it again!
I loved El Deafo! Close Enough to Touch sounds interesting - I'm also dealing with something similar to what you described and it would be interesting to see more of these kinds of issues in books.
I would suggest The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. It's the series that hooked me on fantasy years ago in middle school. Definitely geared toward a younger audience, but I have such fond memories of it.
I Capture the Castle has been on my tbr for a long time!
Rebecca is soooo good ^^
amazing video as always ❤
I bought the exact version you have of Rebecca, because I see it everytime in the background and it's so pretty!! AND the plot sounds so intriguing. Excited to start reading the book :3
So for books designed for younger audiences that are great enough for consumption as an adult, I recommend, Brandon Mull's Beyonders series and Fablehaven series', as well as Brandon Sandersons book The Rithmatist. All extremely good and enjoy them enough to have picked The Rithmatist as the first edition I had signed by Brandon Sanderson.
I read Into The Drowning Deep because I saw it on your channel, and I loved it so much! I'm not a huge fan of mermaids/sirens, but as a sci-fi fanatic I was not disappointed. Amazing read, thanks for recommending.
I actually checked out An Unkindness of Magicians from the library yesterday because you consistently recommended it! I also loved Into the Drowning Deep when I read it after hearing you mention it.
Woo! I hope you love it!
Loved Rebecca! I also read Jamaica Inn by DuMaurier and love it too! El Deafo was one of my class’s favorites!
Great call on I Capture the Castle. I really enjoyed it.
Since you liked East I'm going to recommend you read the sequel West, it's also very good. I got some good recommendations from here and am now subscribed. Thanks!
I absolutely adored Rebecca! That twist at the end! So good!
I Capture The Castle sounds so cool and you're right, I've never heard of it before! :D I'll definitely try to make it happen ;)
Same with Into the Drowning Deep, I'm also obsessed with mermaid stories and have yet to find a newer one I actually enjoy!
One of my favourite books is Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. I have never heard anyone on booktube so much as mention it. It's from 2006, but still... It's soo good. I highly recommend it!
YES on El Deafo! I love that you have more than one Deaf focused book !!
I read Rebecca last month and absolutely loved it too. I Capture the Castle I read as a teen and really enjoyed it but don't remember much, must reread it!
I captured the castle has been on my tbr for a long time now. Must read!!!
Great Book of Amber (first 3-4) and Riddle Master of Hed. Both from the 70's with unique magic systems and great world building.
Also, you are the only channel I follow on purpose!
I LOVE Rebecca! It's one of my favorite books of all time! Right up there with memoirs of a Geisha for me!
I read into the drowning deep because of you and freaking loved it! What a brilliant book :)
I read East way back in the day and really liked it! I haven't picked up West, but I've heard it basically backtracks on character development in East and I'm not sure I really like that. I've been meaning to pick up An Unkindness of Magicians. Into the Drowning Deep was such a fun killer mermaid book. Definitely want more of that!
Hey Merphy! Have you ever read/reviewed any Tamora Pierce books? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Protector of the Small Quartet, the Immortals Quartet or the Beka Cooper trilogy!
Heather from Bookables talks about Sara Barnard quite a bit, so I’m glad to hear thoughts from someone else too!
If you like creative retellings you would like Tiger Lily. I was skeptical when I first started reading it but it blew my mind.
I finally read Rebecca based off your recommendation and I absolutely loved it! I wish more people read it. I was gagging at certain points with how OBSESSED the narrator was with her husband and how unhealthy their relationship was. I also enjoyed that it was a mystery in the sense that at the beginning of the book the narrator was speaking of Manderly how it’s abandoned and then when in Monte they’re speaking how beautiful it is and it’s reputation that I spent the entirety of the book wondering what could have happened that would have made them move out of such a beautiful estate. I absolutely loved it.
I’m now reading Warbreaker and I’m completely engrossed with it after the first sentence. It’s my first Sanderson book so I’m very excited to read the Mistborn Trilogy after this.
"I didn't like the ending" Every Merphy Napier video ever :)
Tess d'Uberville had a satisfactory ending
I know, so many books go the safe route instead of really hitting me with a good ending!
@@merphynapier42 Totally :) I just think it's funny is all I mean no disrespect!
Yes! El Deafo is really good! I've been meaning to read Goodbye Perfect
El Deafo is an amazing story! It definitely needs to be talked about more! Also she was four years old when she got sick and went deaf, but I don’t know what she got sick with.
You should definitely read It Ends With Us by Coleen Hoover. Its one romance book that had a strong, impactful message. I’m normally not a romance genre kinda girl...but this book woooh!
LOVED East, I reread it every year and feel so nostalgic. I downloaded a sample of the one that comes after it and will be skipping it 😂
I went to put into the drowning deep on my want to read list on good reads, and I saw that it has a prequel? Rolling in the deep. Maybe that’s one to check out!
Such a cool idea! Good to see Rebecca on this list :D
Into The Drowning Deep is my favorite Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire book. I want to read her Feed trilogy and Parasitology series.
Hi Merpy I hope you're doing well. I am excited because I signed up to be a patron for you on the 1st. 💜 you and your channel.
Awe thank you so much!! ❤️
I've never thought of I Capture the Castle as a classic before. I know it's older than most books I've read, but I'm also the weirdo who reads Shakespeare for fun. Maybe because the writing style is so much more accessible than books we usually think of as classics? Regardless, it's probably my all time favorite book, and I'm so happy to see it get some love.
There's a book series that I have to mention even though it wasn't in the video, but it fits the theme of under water books, that is Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins. The first two books are really slow, but no one ever talks about the last three. It seems like people forget Suzanne Collins wrote a series before hunger games.
I didn’t! I read all of those because my sister did and begged me to. I read Hunger Games years later and I was surprised when I noticed that it was the same author.
I think the Gregor series is for a bit younger audience isn’t it? It was still a nice series though
I feel like the Queen's Thief series isnt talked about a lot but i LOVE that series. I was wondering if you've read it?
Excited to watch the video!
I listened to the audiobook of Into the Drowning Deep and it was fantastic!
I’m not sure if you’re looking for Manga recs but Monster or Pluto by Naoki Urasawa are both amazing masterpieces that I recommend! :)
I just finished I Capture the Castle! I couldn't agree more that it's underated. It's such a phenomenal book!
So I found your channel recently and I found it SUPER helpful as aspiring author (currently on my 4th draft of my 1st attempt at a novel...) ... long shot but is it possible to pick your brain about your thoughts on my story or anything like that?
Also you’d be the worlds best beta reader !
Omg El Deafo!!! I read that in third grade and then again in 6th and I loved it each time and I would probably love it again if I read it again definitely go read it it’s incredible!!
Oh yeah I once had a friend who was allergic to pepper so she had a similar struggle with food. I went on holiday with her one time, so I got to see the struggle... her allergy wasn't life-threatening at least, but she would get terrible rashes and itches and it just was not a good experience as a whole.
One fantasy series that I really like but never see in videos is The Ember in the Ashes. The world it takes place in is based on the Roman Empire, and there is magic-based conflict interwoven with political conflict. It’s a major page-turner, and the main villain is one of my favorite villains. I also wish I saw more Earthsea Cycle. I kind of see a similarity to Earthsea in The Kingkiller Chronicle because they’re both about boy-wizards and there is naming magic, but the worlds and characters are quite different. My third underrated recommendation is The Tales of Alvin Maker by Orson Scott Card. Yes, the Ender guy. This series is part fantasy, part alternate history. It gives a lot to think about while still being fun, and it shows a different side to multiple historical figures.
East was my shit as a kid. I loved it cause it had Cupid/Psyche elements to it. Great list!
Simon of Savidgereads and Lauren from Laurenandthebooks both love Rebecka and hype it up a lot. I am not telling you to say that you are wrong about the book not being hyped a lot, but to give you (and whoever else reads this comment) recommendations for other booktubers with some overlapping tastes!
Since you enjoyed Rebecca and you've been getting into Stephen King, I recommend Bag of Bones. Would love to hear your opinion on that.
I highly recommend “Time’s Children” by D.B. Jackson. It’s a great fantasy debut. Probably the best I’ve read since Elantris.
First, Hi from Brazil.
second, love your channel, love your reviews and your taste in books.
Finally, some underrated books here on booktube that I think you would really like:
- the witchlands series by Susan dennard
- The night Diary by Veera Hiranandani
- A Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos
Ohh. And Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett
Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly. Recommended by Brandon Sanderson himself in some of his talks. A book I don't really hear much being talked about even though it's really good. I wouldn't even had read it in the first place if I hadn't heard Brandon talked about in a chat with a RUclipsr 3 years ago. The author's influence is really evident on Branderson as you progress along the story.
As someone who can't read books all the way through I loved Goodbye Perfect. The way they set up the grooming and how their friendship was then to how it was now was well done. And the adults around the main character (expect victoms mom) were good and reasonable.
The ending was a bit hit or miss. I remember kinda felt like it was trying to be open to a sequel.
One thing that was a bit annoying was the main character's repetitive monologue of, "I don't want to lie but it wasn't my fault what was the big idea I am just trying to be a good friend" and so on and so on.
Though, sadly, I did not finish Quiet Kind of Thunder i highly recommend it. Its cute and maked me want to learn BSL. The romance wasn't super fast or too slow and there were other plot points that made it more fleshed out.
Overall two solid books.
I read east a long time ago..i remember really liking it! I should read it again..i think theres a second book ..ive seen it next to it at b&n
Can totally vouch for An Unkindness of Magicians. It's a really great standalone fantasy! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Here’s a few recs that I don’t hear spoken about a lot.
Under Heaven and River Of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay.
The King Raven Trilogy by Stephen Lawhead.
Magnus/Wings Of Dawn/whatever it’s been reprinted as, by Sigmund Brouwer.
The Robotech novels by Jack McKinney.
And lastly, a shameless plug, Sleeper Agent by M. Anthony Harris.
A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World by C. A. Fletcher outside of me and my bestie i haven't seen a single person talk about this book and it's really sad because it's such a good book.
I bought "An Unkindness of Magicians" after your last video on it (The one where you said you rated it too high) and I absolutely loved it! Embarassingly, I read it all in one sitting and them immediately told my mum about it to make her read it (And she's loving it so far too), so I gotta say that I wholeheartedly agree that it should get more attention!
I can't wait until the sequel, I wasn't the /biggest/ fan of the ending
Though I don't agree with calling it the adult Harry Potter, the stories are so unalike and just in general the way things work in each universe are so unlike eachother that trying to even generally reference them against eachother just feels really odd to me. It makes me wonder if these people have even read Harry Potter, honestly xD
It feels a lot like a magical Hunger Games to me honestly (Though that's just my opinion ofc)
I'm so glad you loved it so much!!!
Into the drowning deep was really spooky hey? Do you have any other similar stories you could recommend? :)
Given your love of mermaids and sirens, have you read the Mermaid Forest manga? It’s by Rumiko Takahashi and it definitely dips into the darkness of mermaid myths. I believe there are three books to it. I really enjoyed it.
Oh thank you for the rec!
Rebecca is one of my all time favorite books!
Rebecca has such a good story. Even the movie is amazing, I loved both. The movie only cut a few things which is because it's old.
Thanks for the recommendations, so many interesting books.
Have you read the book, "My Cousin Rachel" by Daphne DeMaurier? I like the cover showing these big iron gates looking at a huge mansion, it's absolutely beautiful. They made a movie from it, but I haven't seen it or read it... yet.
If you're looking for more mermaid/siren books books, you should try the Water Trilogy by Kara Dalkey. It isn't dark, but the storyline is interesting. It has court intrigue, different types of mermaids, and is Arthurian/ Lady of the Lake inspired.
I don't know if you still see the comments on a video posted so long ago, but I would totally recommend the Wolf by Wolf duology, by Ryan Graudin. I barely see anyone talk about these books and they're fantastic! It involves alternative history (the nazis won the war, in this case), so I understand if people are a bit standoffish, but they're SO good! The story is fantastic, the characters are complex, they develop so well, the pacing is thrilling and the writing is gripping. I couldn't recommend it more. I'm in the middle of book 2 right now and unless something really drastic changes, it's set out to be one of my favorite series ever.
I doubt you'll see this since it is so old, but I recommend you check out The Devil and the Deep, a horror anthology edited by Ellen Datlow. Mira Grant (AKA Seanan McGuire) has an amazing short story in that collection. There are several other really impressive stories in there too centering around the ocean and water. That said, not every story in the collection was a gem.
Thank you!
I read East back in middle or high school...don't remember a lot but I remember I really enjoyed it
I've read 'into the drowning deep' and I liked it too!
I looooove Into The Drowning Deep, which I picked up because of you. Agree with you completely about the things you didn't like. That ending 😑 BUT she has a prequel novella called Rolling In The Deep that I just read (only available on kindle) that is the story of what happened on The Atargatis, real time. You should read it! Super good too!
We could have had it alll
Rolling in the deeeep
Sorry
Almost everything I read is underrated, especially my all time favorite series. It’s such an underrated gem and deserves so much more love.
Everyone talks about the Hunger Games trilogy, but an earlier series by Suzanne Collins, called The Underlander Chronicles. It's middle-grade, but I loved, loved, loved it!
East and Rebecca are not talked about enough. They are great books! I think East actually got a second book-I don't really remember that happened or if it was just a rumour.
Have read several of these because of you and LOVED THEM ❤️ also, I capture to the castle has been one of my favourite books since I was a teenager and more people should talk about it!
You should look at the book the capture it is about a young owl named soren who gets snatch and is taken to a big castle where orphaned owls go but soren was not a orphan he meets a tiny elf owl named glyfuld the to team up and try to run away but they have some trouble there are is a big series not much people talk about this book
i think the Magicians' trilogy by Lev Grossman is underrated as a series (It does have a tv show but the tv show is meh compared to the books and the viewer doesn't get the great message of anti escapism and being a "hero") It is similar to an Unkindness of Magicians, in the details of their worlds and being presented as the adult Harry Potter ( and Narnia, in the case of the magicians' trilogy). I think that why it is so underrated. People go into the books with ideas from hp and narnia and judge it for subverting those book tropes. Even though it is supposed to be original. Also people hated the main character and quit the series, but that is the point of the book series? He is supposed to be gray and then evolve as a person as he grow up. I would love your thoughts on this series and i would highly recommend, despite others' criticism.
The show is amazing
East!!!! 😘😘😘😘 You are my favorite and I love you. XOXO
Mira Grant is great, her Newsflesh trilogy is fantastic. The mermaid one is the first in a series so maybe you’ll get the ending you want later :)
Did you ever read The Siren by Keira Cass? She wrote the selection. Its a standalone and is so good. Had mermaid vibes
I have read it!
Based on your love for An Unkindness of Magicians (which I read and enjoyed, based on your recommendation), you should really try The Night Circus, by Erica Morgenstern. It's like a modern fairy tale, with beautiful aesthetics and ideas throughout. I think you'd enjoy it!
I've heard really good things about that one!
I haven't read an unkindness of magicians, but the night circus is incredible
The Night Circus is a far better comparison for An Unkindness of Magicians. Lev Grossman's The Magicians series is more of a grown up Harry Potter.
Chime by Franny Billingsley (weird magical alternate history), Once a Witch by Carolyn McCullough (and the sequel - teen girl from family of witches with no obvious powers), Throat by RA Nelson (teen vampire sets up on a NASA base to destroy her sire). I had a blog from 2011-2016 and read 300+ books a year. I could go on forever. Lol
If there’s any manga I highly recommend it’s anything by Junji Ito. His stories are horror but not anything depicted is overly graphic or gory that tend to be in the manga genre (because a lot of horror manga tend to just show an obtuse amount of bloody imagery). I honestly don’t know how to describe it other than very “otherworldly” and “disturbing”. I highly recommend Uzumaki or Gyo by him as a first time read, but he does have several short story collections out at Barnes/Amazon including a retelling of Frankenstein.
Word of warning: don’t expect any or all of the characters to be fleshed out. They only serve the purpose to be a victim of whatever the heck is going on in what story it is you’re reading. Even the most flawed individuals in his stories can feel very two dimensional. It’s always the “out-of-this-world” situations that take precedence and will captivate you.
Can you please do the boujee booktuber tag from abookolives channel? I really want to see your answers!! :)
What is my favorite underrated series? The Fallen by Thomas E. Sniegoski.
So I was wondering if you could ever get to a book that won lots of awards and got tons of hype, but I really didn’t like. The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi. It’s more Dystopian than anything else, but I need to know if I’m crazy and/or missing something.
Have you read night circus yet? I love you Channel and I would love to talk about books with you you and I seem to have really similar taste
May have to read too close to touch as I also have severe allergies and get frustrated with the representation in tv.
I loved East!
I read El Defo,in 5th grade for Battle of the books and loved it, It was my first graphic novel. I personally liked the ending, not my favorite but still enjoyed the ending
An Unkindness of Magicians sounds so good!
