Maybe strange to say , but you actually changed my life :O from childhood on i was on the darker sides of, at the age of 14 i had already 2 juvenile convictions and at age 26 i did approx 5 years in multiple terms. Cocaine, booze, homeless. It was a deadly spiral. Then at my last visit to the states hotels, a guard introduced me to the guitar, he lend me an old acoustic one that was barely to be tuned, but i got the first chords down. started to play in the church band in jail and then my father smuggled in 2 dvd's (Yes i know i am from Holland, where jails are actually really hotels) with youtube movies. Starring Marty Schwarz ever since i am hooked to guitar and music and a lot of times it keeps me out of trouble. Thanks a lot.

Lynnie Babes there are probably a dozen chords that every beginner must master in order to go from crawling to waddling. In between learning songs, every week, pick 4 of those chords, master them literally until you can change between them with your eyes closed. See how many chord changes you can do in a minute. Do that for 10 minutes a day. Everyday. In a month you'll be shocked at how much easier songs get to play.

Marty, Had a guitar for a little over 1 year between 16-18 years old. Sold it and joined the Army. After Vietnam I couldn’t get into anything. Fifty years passed and for the last 4 years I’ve been learning. You have been a huge part of that process. Thank you. My guitar and songs from the 60’s are a comfort.

I Love stories like this, I was lucky enough to have awesome dad named Bill Miser who was a Chicago Blues Man and Old School Gospel Singer. I would sit around and watch him play and sing for years until when I was about 16 he bought me a baby blue fender stratocaster for 20$ from one of my friends and I spent the following 5 years or so learning all the songs he would play and sing until he died when I was 21 from asbestos lung cancer. I'm so glad I took the time to learn his music because now whenever I want to be with him I can play them and feel and hear him playing beside me. Kinda sucks tho he would always play rhythm and I would play leads but now I only get to play his part and then switch to my part never getting to hear them both at the same time like it was cuz I have no one to play with. I did have a bit of forward thinking and got him to go to a recording studio one day and we recorded a handful of songs but he was having a hard time breathing that day so the recording isn't his best not anything like how amazing we used to play during a long night of beers and BBQ. Anyway kind of a rant but this was his favorite song and he sang it with such power it literally would have people in tears, I know it brings me to tears just trying to replicate it best I can. Marty Schwartz here was crucial in my learning process whenever I wasn't playing with my pops I was learning stuff from Marty and would bust it out when I played with my pops later on and he would get so excited to hear me playing songs he didn't even know how to play. He would shout "Wow! Josh that is so cool!" at the top of his lungs when I would get done playing a new song, even came up with a song or two of my own that he really enjoyed. so Im happy to see Marty made a video on this song, I love to hear him play as well, very emotional for me.
      Music is a wonderful thing,
Keep on rockin in the free world!
      ~Josh Miser

Hey man, I started to teach myself guitar around March of this year, 2018. I've basically used your videos to teach me my favorite songs and in turn learning the finger shapes for the notes and bam! We're in October, 7 months later, my "guitar can play" playlist is at 22 now and i know pieces of others you've shown. Damn Metallica kills me... lol. Anyways. Just wanted to say in a novel sized comment. Thanks. Keep it up. You've got a great way on getting what some would consider boring, tedious and painful, (poor fingertips), a hobby I want to come home and do instead of a chore .Thank you.

Marty, just wanted to let you know that I’m 45 years old and i was born with a birth defect called spina Bifida and I’m confined to a wheelchair but that doesn’t stop me. I work part time with kids at a boys & girls club. I’ve always wanted to play the guitar but was scared that I wouldn’t be able to learn how so finally my mother asked what I wanted for my birthday and I told her a guitar so she ordered me a starter guitar from Walmart! It comes with a strap and a pick and extra Metal strings and a pitch whistle and an Digital-E-tuner! I will be receiving it on the 9th of November and looking forward to it. I came upon your link here on RUclips as I was Searching on how to learn guitar and found you and saw how fun and easy you make learning! I’m going to follow you through my learning experience

Thanks, I know you can play the paint off the wall, but thanks for your humility. To me that's the mark of a real man. You don't bully us. You enjoy sharing your knowledge. Arlo Guthrie says during his performances that he borrowed from the all his hands friends, and enjoys giving sharing that knowledge, it's how music evolves. Thank you for your help in musical evolution.

I started playing this song with my high school Rock band, never giving the strum much focus since the progression of the song is so dramatic and familiar to most, however your lesson gave me pause to the Rolling of the strum with a counterpoint nuance. Thank You Mr. Schwartz.

There is a house in new orleans

And it's been the ruin of many other poor boys
And god, I know, I'm one
    My mother was a tailor

My father was a gamblin' man

And the only thing a gamblin' man needs
    Is a suitcase and trunk

Marty, thank you so much! For all your videos! I was the Rhythn guitarist for Fool's Forgiven for 7 years, and our last tour was 2005. After that, my guitar sat for 13 years. Last month, I broke my shoulder riding my Ninja, and at 50, I knew I needed therapy to get it moving again. My son pulled my guitar off the rack and insisted that I play. I found your videos and have thouroughly enjoyed learning a lot of music...the old arm is working again, and the dexterity from not playing is coming back!

Hi Marty. I have always sucked at using a pick (plectrum), do you think you could do a basic tutorial on how to use a pick? I always grow my nails, which I find don't sound as good, but it feels more natural. Might sound like a super basic thing to teach, but man, my picking is so bad. Would be good to get your input into how to develop the technique and to use the right kind of pick, especially for a beginner pick user. As always thanks for your tutorials, awesome You Tube Channel, your work here is very much appreciated.

If your picking hasn't improved yet, try a thumb pick. It would be a very similar feeling to your nail.

    • @sambeatty2312

I too have issue, I had my right thumb re-attached at the first digit and had extreme difficulties at first. However, after practicing 2-3 hours a day for a month I got the hang of it, just keep practicing and you'll get it.

I’ve been back playing guitar for the past year now, since I was a teenager. Out of all the online teachers, Marty is my go to guy. He is a great player and he really breaks things down for people. He has the ability to make people learn & understand the guitar and the songs he’s playing. Thank you so much for your help. I have learned great lengths and can’t wait to play more with you. I would really like to see you cover Nautical Disaster by the Tragically Hip. Also if you could do Pretty Dope Fiend by the delinquents that would be wicked and would be the first I’ve seen. Thanks again Marty, you’re awesome and the best teacher out there. I really appreciate how easy you make it learning a tune; you break the tune down into easy blocks and how to pick out strings in the best way I have seen online. Other players baffle me with over-complicated explanations about chord progression and everything else. Most people learning want to be able to play a song or two before going deeper into the whole guitar method & history.
Thank you so much; I am NOW enjoying how to play the guitar at long last & watching the other tutors was beginning to think I should give up because I could not grasp the overload of information and was thick or not musically inclined. You have convinced me that with your help; anyone can at least learn to play a couple of song on guitar and they don't need to grow 6 extra fingers. Cheers Marty God bless you.
    Keith.
