    I do this as all the time but with thrift store clothes! I learned new ways to make pockets! Just a few hints with sewing certain fabrics. I once remade a long sleeved high neck tshirt by lowering the neckline and shortening to elbow length sleeves. I also have a fairly large mom tummy from big babies so I often put V insets at sides of my tops so used the left over sleeve material to do that. It was a rib knit like your skirt material. It would not hem at all no matter how I tried it kept stretching out. Then I saw it was rolling to the right side of fabric easily. The pattern was printed on front and dark but the back was barely showing the print looking almost white. So I rolled it to the front once, did a tiny narrow zig zag over the edges and it looked great. Even the U neckline worked well doing that. With other knits I give up and do a lettuce edge. Sometimes with very soft unstable knit I will cut a sturdy tshirt lengthwise, not on bias, or crosswise to use as if it was hemming lace. And I have used lace to hem too. Sometimes I use contrast lace to make my V insets then cover the sleeve edges as a cuff. For a lot of my casual tshirts I remodel I use the lettuce edge on most of the cut edges! It just is really hard to cross hem tshirt material! I also do empire line a lot for adding a skirt but some of that is dictated by what skirt material im adding. I don't want it to be gathered too much. Oh.....I always make an elastic casing. I never sew my elastic in 50 years to my top material. I estimate an inch and a half for seams and do either one inch above my waist or at empire line. I insert the elastic then fit to myself the way I like it. All material gathers up differently. I love these crop shirts you chose though. I saw Jack Skellyton tshirts in the store for Halloween coming up... from the cartoon movie. I may go back and make a tshirt dress from that one!!

      I have thought about making a few game day dresses. I love that you upcycle from the thrift store. 💕 I appreciate you tip about the fabric. I have run into that type of cantankerous knit too. Your solution was inspired! Thanks for sharing. I am sure it will help someone who finds their lovely knit is really an unruly animal.

    I love the one with the green because it hangs so nice. I think it looks great without the belt. Thank you for your tutorial. I leaned some things I didn’t know. I’ve been sewing for about 50 years.

    I personally think with your shape, a empire waist would look better.......it would bring up the skirt portion higher on your body and flow better. I love making these type dresses.

      I do wear a lot of Empire waisted things! I have a pile of things that need tweaking, and these are on that pile. Specifically for the waistline. Good eye!

    I love the green one as it blends and hangs better than the other one. I think the green one is actually quite slimming making you look taller. ❤❤❤

    They both look super cute even without a belt. During hot weather I'd throw the belt out the window 😂. Thanks for reminding me of this great upcycling option. I have tees that I've kind of gotten bored with but this can give them new life.😊

    Looks fantastic! I'd love a whole wardrobe of these dresses. This is probably a stupid question but i need to know. Do you sew with an overlocker? I'm really a beginner like totally a beginner

    • @stacyrobbins
      @stacyrobbins  3 месяца назад +1

      I do use an overlock machine but it isn't a necessity. A sewing machine with a zig zag option is the place to start. if you love sewing and want to dive deep, then start looking at overlocks. (Just my opinion as a long time sewing teacher)
