Just need to tell you: you have given me the confidence to adjust my clothes that NEVER fit for 60 plus years! I call my “body type” a “tube” aka no butt or hips, big waist and boobs that seem to grow with my waist. Last measurement: 44, 42, 43 - a tube. Been a tube all my life and I’m short so clothes never, ever have fit me! Until now. I shop thrift shop clothes and refit all my garments to my body, thanks to you! First time comfortable in my clothes. Your wonderful teachings have given me that. Thank you! Sorry so long, just had to let u know.
In Houston I had a co-worker who was friends with Lynn Wyatt. She would house sit for Oscar and Lynn quite often. Lynn is known for her fashion sense. My co-worker, in a conversation said Lynn kept her sewing machine setup inside her closet. Lynn often times up cycled her exquisite wardrobe.
That is really cool. Yes, the old money super rich are known to keep their items and upcycle some to “fit the times”. Princess Anne, Catherine (Princess of Wales) and THE fashion icon of the 20th century Princess Diana were known to upcycle items they already had.
Thank you, Catherine! Because of your videos, I got the nerve up to take apart a baggy sweatshirt partially, removed the bottom band and hemmed it, took out the extra fabric on the sides, recut and raised the armscye so the sleeves that I thought were too long turned out to be the right length. I learned to sew back when I was a perfect size 12 Simplicity pattern, so I didn't really learn fitting. 50 years and 3 kids later, I need to fit things. Anyway, now I have a tunic length sweatshirt that fits! Thanks again!
Great re-use of a shirt! I took Alterations at a city college and my first project was to alter a blouse from a thrift shop. That was in 2004 and I still love that blouse's fabric. Maybe I will reconfigure it again! Yesterday, I finally found my tub of ribbing, so that can be used for some thrift store finds. I'm a grandma who has been sewing since I was nine years old. Thanks and I subscribed today.
I completely love how you think outside the box. i have good basic sewing skills, very basic and tend to be a hyper perfectionist because i'm so afraid i will screw things up. You make all these modifications look so EASY and DOABLE. Thanks so much for the inspiration.
I'm jazzed to have found your channel. I'm not a prolific sew-ist, and I have a stack of "possibility" shirts and sweaters I've been waiting for courage and inspiration to upcycle.
I love it, my husband has so many plaid shirts, I can make new blouses. For everyone. Thank you,, will be looking forward for more new ideas from you💯💯💯💯💯
I shop at resale shops and buy mostly men's button down shirts. Cut off the cuffs and collar keeping the band. See up the packet on the sleeves and then zigzag stitch around those edges. Fine for my farm work shirts. Love what you did here I have no experience with the ribbed stuff though. Might take a try.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Love the look and can't believe how many different ways you can wear it now! I will have to zigzag because I dont have a serger YET!! I hope you will put more upcycles here because you really explain what, how and why so well. Thank you
How cute!! Love your solution for the front placket, too. I know what I'm going to be doing in August when it's😊 too hot here to be outside much. Subscibed. I've sewn all my life, but never attempted alterations.
Oh my goodness! I just found your channel! Love this video and also how to make one of those horrible oversized tees wearable! Mind blown! Love the tip about the right angle on the neckline. Always have had problems there! And I can’t stand collared shirts either, but I do love flannel! Genius!
You’re my new favorite sewing teacher, Catherine! 😀 👏 🪡 🧵 I like your meticulous, yet chill vibe, and like you, I’m very casual & wanna be comfy, yet still look pulled together, so I resonate w/ your sensibilities there, as well! Yet another RUclips algorithm winner! 🙌
What a simple yet cool upcycle! I love how you made the shirt softer with the neckline and sleeve adjustments, as well as adding the heather gray ribbing to keep the casual, cozy look of the flannel. I like this!
Hello Catherine, I love the upcycling you share with us. I am from the UK and have been sewing for 50 years. The satisfaction you feel from sewing a " one off " is amazing. Please keep the video's coming. I am learning from scratch again. Thanks
I love your videos, I am just getting back into sewing. So I'm glad I found your site. Very easy to understand and follow. Now to try to make something lol.
Fabulous remake. I have several similar shirts that I really don't love to wear and this is a great way to change them into something I would wear. Love the collar on your dog.🦮
It’s a winner alright! Super cute and the way you explained it seems easy. I will show it to my Seemstress 🤦♀️😱😬. Regards Maya from Hungary. Oh and subscribed to your channel. 🙏👍👍👏👏
This is such a great idea. I have quite a pile of work ahead. I got tired of my designer shirts, taking space in my closet so they are going to become T shirts. Thank you for a great idea. Blessings ❤
Hello Catherine. I just recently came across your channel. Have always thought I'd like to be able to revamp my clothing. Well, now I have your videos to pull up and use to teach myself how to change my clothes. Thanks for your knowledge and caring to share. Be well.
I've been doing that for years as collars never sit right on my neck. I have often picked the collat apart to make bias tape-- fiddly I know so glad for the idea of stretchy fabric binding. I probably would have bound the neckline first then sewed the fronts together. you can als sew them by hand from the back.
I really like the way you updated your flannel shirt!! It has always bothered me about the collar area on a flannel shirt, that it needs to be ironed to look good because I’m too lazy to do it. You solved that problem in a very cute way. ❤️❤️❤️
😊 Thank you so much Catherine, I followed your instructions and my finished garment turned out really well, really happy with the outcome and looking forward to wearing it. Woohoo 🥰
Catherine, I am loving your channel. I found you yesterday and have been binge watching you constantly until my phone needs to be charged. As soon as its done i get right back to your videos. I went to your oldest ones and had to skip some cuz Im an experienced seamstress. I used to sew every day but havent looked at my machine in almost 20 yrs. I cant wait to find something to recycle or trace a long dress i have and make a new one. Thank you for the inspiration, you are a fantastic teacher!
Your video is motivating me to do some up cycling of my own. I will probably start with a shirt that I don't mind ruining, because I'm sure there will be a learning curve....😉. Thanks for inspiring us!
Great idea especially for me bcoz I’m tall ladies shirt sleeves never are long enough , so I hafta roll up the cuff only for it to unroll, then when I wear a jacket the bulk in there makes me go bananas! !
Oh my goodness. I love your ideas. I have a flannel shirt similar to yours and I am going to try it. I feel floppy in mine right now for the same reasons. Thank you
I agree with you about up cycling. My daughter and I thrift and garage sale together . I love your idea with the plaid shirt. I will be transforming one of my shirts. Thank you this is an awesome idea. Turned out really cute.
This is such an amazing transformation for this style of shirt. I love it. So much cuter. Although I love a great plaid flannel shirt, you have totally changed my mind on how to wear this great shirt. 😮. You made the instructions so clear and easy to follow. I feel I really should invest in some ribbing just to have in hand. I have made T-shirts in the past and have use ribbing but I never thought of removing a collar. Thank you again. 🎉🎉
Want a serger so bad, any recommendation on the new ones out there? Would get free lessons with new one, but will just keep watching you, love your voice as you teach, I loved my Home Ec teacher, 😘♥️🦋
Sylvia, if I was buying a new serger today, I'd treat myself to a BabyLock Victory. They're amazing! And really easy to thread and to use. Thanks for your sweet comment.
I wear collared and cuffed shirts in the winter to help me stay warmer. Otherwise, I get really cold. For the spring, this alteration would be a good idea.
Like the tutorial on up-cycling a shirt. Recycling attractive male tailored shirts to useable female shirt presents a fitting problem in the chest area. Wondering if it is possible to accommodate the chest area to a better fit.
Thank you! To fit better over the bustline, one viewer suggested opening the side seam and creating a bust dart, then shortening the back to match the new length of the front side seam. I think that would work!
@@CatherineSews Thank you for the bust dart suggestion. Is there a solution for aligning the center plaque while creating a bust dart in the chest area of the shirt?
I think this will work for a linen shirt that I like but haven't worn much because of the cuffs and collar. The only thing is it has pockets on the front. I honestly am not fond of boob pockets! I'll have to think about whether I can just unpick to do away with them. BTW, I am loving your videos. I have to stop watching them and get sewing!
Thanks, Sheila. You're right, that does pop up pretty quick! There are only 20 seconds available at the end of YT videos for the end cards, but I'm wearing the final product for a full minute at the end, so hopefully that helps you see the "after" at least!
Thank you so much for this video. About a year ago I found a North Face fleece jacket at the Goodwill Outlet. I got it home and noticed that the sleeve cuffs had been mangled by something. I was able to repair the sleeves following this tutorial. It was a really easy fix.
I really liked what you did to the shirt! I object to collars and buttons also but I have some short sleeve shirts that I would like to change the neckline on. I don’t know that ribbing would look quite right. I’m thinking more of a bias binding tucked inside. But I’m definitely open for suggestions!
This is the third video of yours that I have watched and I have to say OMG, you are awesome! Your style, how the garmit feels on your body, and your philosophy on upcycling totally matches mine. What a joy that I found your videos!
I just got a solid dark blue thrifted linen shirt I want to do this to. But I want a more elegant neckline than ribbing. I love that it is now a pull over shirt because I actually hate dealing with the buttons on a button up shirt. It is quite large on me so I might have a piece big enough to use in the neckline. Do you have any ideas? Would you do another men's shirt video with different necklines and sleeves? I'm getting excited!
Hmmm, if you could find a matching silky knit, that could make a lovely trim for the neck, or even a mesh. You could also use a bias binding if you found a good match.
You could also try adding some dark blue cotton lace, sewn on the inside then flipped to the right side to cover the raw edge. I’ve done that sort of thing many times and it looks very elegant.
Great job! Really glad I found your channel! We are of one mind on up cycling and your giving me the tools I need to attempt some of these. Now I just need the time!… retiring next year ☺️
i recently altered a pink button down mens shirt. I cut the sleeves off at the cuff then i folded the cut edge up and sewed it then added an elastic so i can push the sleeves up. The cuffs i serged the edges and added lace then turned them upside down, feels feminine. I added a heart shaped lace piece of fabric in the front where the buttons are to cover a stain and it feels super feminine and i love it! I had another shirt that i put on over my head and altered this so i could open the shirt up instead of putting on over my head. I cut the collar off and wear the collar around my neck still while its unattached to the shirt. Its super cute and i love it more now!! Cutting the cuffs off and putting elastic i love too!!
Great re-make; thanks for sharing! I have a plaid cotton blouse that this would be a perfect re-make for! It’s a light cotton so I think I’ll use bias tape to finish the lines with. I have collected my mom’s & others’ bias tape colors to finish things off. Such a fun find when the sewing staples can be used. Blessings to all🤗💜
If collars are sometimes uncomfortable to wear in hot weather, unpick the seam between collar and band holding the collar on, then hand sew or carefully machine the opening closed.

The best remake of a shirt I have ever seen. Thank you, so, so much. Fantastic!!!

Thanks so much, Janet!
I have a flannel that I’ve kept but don’t like how it fits but love the color. This is my next project thank you!

If collars are sometimes uncomfortable to wear in hot weather, unpick the seam between collar and band holding the collar on, then hand sew or carefully machine the opening closed.
