Another Great one, thanks. This is the second project I introduce to my students for many of the reasons you mentioned. I take the Mr. Miyagi way of teaching them, make all these little things then when they hit the big projects remind them of the concepts they learned along the way.
Do you zigzag the edges of fabric before you wash it? I tried putting new fabric in the washer when I bought it and ended up with a huge knot of threads and about half the fabric that I bought. ☹️ every sewing video says to wash it when you get it but no one says anything about serging or zigzaging the edges first
Yes, it's definitely a good idea to do that! Especially fabrics that fray easily. For the pencil case and messenger bag projects we don't prewash because the final product probably won't be machine washed.
