I am SO grateful to have grown up during this incredible era. The 1980s gave us the best movies & music and was by far the happiest time to be alive. This was the last generation to grow up without cell phones or internet. Thank God the younger generation is discovering our culture. Enjoy the ride.

Gina bringing home her pay for love, is saying since Tommy can't get work on the docks she's floating the bills. and that's what for better or for worse in the real world really means. Sometimes there's highs and sometimes there's lows. And you have to do what you can to make it. That's the real world. Anyone who doesn't know this isn't living in the real world.
This came out when people weren't as fake as they are today. Many people today wouldn't even begin to comprehend.

What he was using with his guitar and the microphone is called a Talk Box. The best way to explain how a talk box works, is similar to what we used to do with our single earphone from our transistor radios back in the day. We would stick them in our mouth and open and close our mouth when the volume was turned up real loud to whatever music was coming through. You can do the same effect nowadays by taking a single earbud putting in your mouth with the music turned up as loud as you can get and open and close your mouth as the music blares. Now the way it really works is a tube is coming out of a small box amplifier up to his microphone and the amplified sounds of his guitar are being played through that tube which he puts in his mouth and he opens and closes his mouth in different ways or even talks and the microphone the tube is strapped to picks up both the sound of his guitar being pumped through that tube and in his mouth all at the same time and that's what you hear. Hence a talk box. He uses it in a lot of different songs. Sometimes he's actually talking sometimes he's just open and closing his mouth to get different sound effects.

When you "hock" something, you put it up against a loan (usually at a fraction of it's value) with the idea you get it back once you pay the loan. If you fail to pay, you lose the item. Basically Tommy pawned his guitar to try to get by while he was on strike.

The tube is attached to the wah wah pedal for the guitar which give 7:47 s it that sound when you talk into it. The tube then goes from the wah wah pedal up the side of the mic stand and into the mouth. At least that’s how the original one was done. There may be a better way to do it now but I recently have seen it the original way as well.

Tommy’s got his six-string in hock. The six-string is a guitar (it has 6 strings). “In hock” means he mortgaged it to a pawn shop for some cash. If he doesn’t pay it back in a certain time, the shop will sell the guitar to someone else.

I went to a Bon Jovi concert once and managed to get out on the floor. I also fought my way to the front and was about 6 feet from him while Jon sang. The crowd I was in was not as large as this one, but it was no joke. My ribs were sore where I was pressed against the barrier. A lot of girls were passing out because because the crowd was too much for them. People would just pick them up and pass them over to the roadies to get them out so they could recover. It was the best concert I have ever been to. The music was a blast and Jon ran everywhere. There were catwalks so he could run around and get closer to the crowds further back. At one point he used a harness to fly over us and land on a small stage in the middle of the crowd so people back there could be closer to him. It was so much fun! I was absolutely exhausted when it was over. They definitely belong in the PDC. Performance-wise I would choose their MTV music video awards performance of Living On a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive. Jon tells the story of where the inspiration for Tommy and Gina comes from. Prayer is slowed down and it is just him and Richie Sambora playing guitars. They about brought the house down. MTV was so blown away the MTV Unplugged series was born where all invited artists played acoustic music. If you want great love songs there are tons of great ones in their catalog. Today I will pick Amen, Thank You For Loving Me, This Ain't a Love Song, and one that is newer called Luv Can. I love this band because a lot of their songs are upbeat and optimistic. Living On a Prayer is a great example, but there are so many more. The band has had its ups and downs, but this is a great year to learn about them because it is the 40th anniversary since their first album was released. They are releasing a documentary called Thank You, Goodnight next month in April 2024. I might add that I started playing guitar because of Richie Sambora.
I love The Who too! Love Reign o'er Me is a great song for PDC material. Behind Blue Eyes, and You Better You Bet are good examples. One of the funniest ones is Boris the Spider. So much real deal rock and roll you just can't go wrong. Roger Daltrey has one of the greatest voices in rock. They are rock history. They were at Woodstock and are still great!

    Hi Britt! :)
I'm from Germany and I really enjoy your reactions and the things YOU have to say about the songs/videos. :)
Loved your Shania Twain reactions especially. They were so much fun to watch! :D (that's when I discovered your channel here on youtube)
Livin on a Prayer surely is one of Bon Jovi's biggest hits and the London show and performace was one of the greatest! Glad you chose that one! :)
    The band (original band members):
Jon Bon Jovi - lead vocals and guitar (rarely piano), songwriter
Richie Sambora (left the band) - backing vocals / sometimes lead vocals, lead guitarist, Jon's wingman, co-songwriter
David Bryan - piano/keyboards (mostly 3-4 at one time in live shows), backing vocals
Tico Torres - beast of a drummer (he has a great voice too sounding something like Louis Armstrong - I'm not kidding!)
Alec John Such (died a few years ago and left the band in the 90's) - bass guitar
    About Bon Jovi...
First of all Richie Sambora (Jon Bon Jovis co-songwriter + incredibly gifted guitarist and wingman through all the years before he left the band a few years ago... sadly) ...the mic/guitar technic he used is called "talk box" and I think Bon Jovi was the band who made this technic famous for the big crowds back in the days.
Bon Jovi have some songs where Tommy & Gina appear in the lyrics. It's kind of Bon Jovis homage to the working-class. Jon has set up several foundations. Among other things, one that provides affordable living space, etc. For this purpose, he wrote the song "Who says you can't go home" years ago with Jennifer Nettles from the country band "Sugarland".
During the Covid pandemic he helped distribute relief supplies.
He has been with his wife since high school and is married (4 children). Especially for a rock star, his life has been surprisingly scandal-free. Politically, he was always on the side of the Democrats and always took a public stance on this.
With over 100 million records sold worldwide and the biggest tours, Bon Jovi are one of the biggest bands in music history. They are very popular even in Asia.
Of course they can also be found in the Hall of Fame.
Jon has had extreme problems with his voice and live singing over the last few years. An illness and the many years of sometimes very high singing parts and long tours have left their mark.
He recently underwent an operation and is probably on the mend.
For many fans, however, something that made Bon Jovi Bon Jovi has "died" since Richie's exit.
The London concert that actually took place at Wembley Stadium shortly before it was demolished (nowadays there is the new one) is considered one of Bon Jovi's best and most legendary concerts. Bon Jovi certainly had his best time in the 80's - 90's and at the beginning of 2000 they continued to play sold out stadium tours worldwide with "It's My Life".
If you ask me, the last album that was really good vocally was “Have a Nice Day”. They released a country influenced record after it which was okay. But for them the "great rock times" where over in my opinion.
That was also the last album and the last time when I considered myself an absolute fan of Bon Jovi.
What remains, of course, is the band's social commitment in general and the great live shows and anthems they have given the world.
Thanks again for your reactions! They always make me smile and with your positive nature your vids always leave me with a positive feeling after watching them. :)
The following songs/videos are highly recommended if you want to discover more from Bon Jovi...
"Dry County" - Legendary live performance from the London concert and one of the best Bon Jovi songs (and the longest) and fantastic live perfomance and Richie could show his real guitar skills. And great deep lyrics too! :)
    ruclips.net/video/xdg7--NrEak/видео.html
"Who says you can't go home" (music video) - A song Jon and Jennifer Nettles from the country band "Sugarland" teamed up for. It's kind of a country rock song and refers to the "Habitat for Humanity" Foundation
    ruclips.net/video/5CeX5VEo10c/видео.html
"Bed of Roses" - A great and famous Bon Jovi rock ballad played at a legendary MTV unplugged live session (with Jon on the piano!)
    ruclips.net/video/FrWpU0Zkq2I/видео.html
"It's my Life" (music video) - Most famous "2000's / new era" Bon Jovi song released after the bands iconic 80's/90's era.
    ruclips.net/video/vx2u5uUu3DE/видео.html
"Always" (live) - One of the best rock ballads ever written if you ask me. A very famous Bon Jovi song.
    ruclips.net/video/-XXM1B3Nitw/видео.html
"Keep the Faith" (live in their home city at Giants Stadium New Jersey 2001) - legendary performance of this famous BJ song + gigantic stage and Jon shows why he is one of the greatest frontmen and Richie one of the best guitarists in music history.
    ruclips.net/video/8rPLEAFOF_E/видео.html
"Runaway" (music video) - The first famous song and kind of the start of their career. Also one of the most iconic piano intros to a rock song ever.
    ruclips.net/video/s86K-p089R8/видео.html
"Have a Nice Day" (music video) - great fun rock song from 2005 from the (just my opinion) last really great Bon Jovi record.
    ruclips.net/video/uCg2BoKiuOM/видео.html
"Welcome to Wherever You Are" (music video) - My personal favorite Bon Jovi song from the 2000+ era. The songs lyrics are really great and lift me up everytime I listen to it.
    ruclips.net/video/w3zcypsjO8o/видео.html
"Do What You Can" (music video) - A never song from the COVID pandemic times. Jon teamed up again with Jennifer Nettles after all these years and they made a song about the hard pandemic times.

The strange sound is made by a tube in his mouth right next to the microphone. If you look close you can see the right side of his mouth has a plastic tube in it right by the microphone. It goes through a synthesizer. Peter Frampton used this in several of his songs in the 70s also.
