- The college basketball game between Prairie View A&M and Alcorn State had a wild sequence to end regulation in which both teams turned the ball over in the final thirty seconds before Alcorn State hit a deep game tying three pointer with just four seconds left. Top seeded Alcorn State was able to avoid an upset loss in overtime and held on for a 64-63 victory over eight seeded Prairie View A&M to advance to the next round of the SWAC Tournament.

Yeah, SWAC teams have to basically play all power 5 teams in their non conference schedule early on. Serve as a “tune up” opponent and submit to being roadkill. They have to in order to supplement their budget and maintain their division 1 status. Something along those lines.
Yeah they literally went 1-11 against potential NCAA tournament field and 14-4 in conference and only won half their games that is why if they win the automatic bid they will get beat in the first round almost every time maybe the second round if they are lucky

Alcorn State is now 16-15 but 15-4 in the conference. 1-11 outside the SWAC but they play all the bigger schools for their inter conference games

@@JK-br1mu No, not really. They play power 5 and way bigger schools for money. I think they also have to do that to maintain their D1 status (not sure about that). They simply can’t compete with the bigger schools.

To be fair SWAC teams and other hbcu teams have to travel to power 5 programs in the nonconference to supplement their athletic budgets thus they take alot of losses early

Its those late game sequences that truly show what kind of team they are. Lesser teams always seem to crack under the pressure which is a shame since Prairie View had the game won if they could just complete a couple passes. But guess that means the better team won.
Yes folks, SWAC/MEAC teams usually are barely over .500, even the conference champs. Watch out for Norfolk St. tho, if they win their tourney

They play tough Power 5 schools in their non conference and play on the road.
Yeah HBCU's have to play almost all power 5 teams in the non conference to make money for their athletic programs.

@@don1again879 Yeah, I always wish there was a lot more more parity, or at the very least, more divisions, as there seem to be many schools that just don’t belong in the same category as Duke, Kentucky, etc, as they’ll never stand a chance against them.

What were these teams out of conference schedules that they only won conference games? Like the eight seed only winning games in conference makes sense but It happened to the conference regular season champs too?
Schools in lower-tier conferences like this (especially HBCUs) often have to play power teams for their out-of-conference games, so they usually get roadkilled. But they need the money for their school athletic budgets and they get a payday for going to Power 5 schools and getting blown out. Same reason in football you see FCS teams go play Top 20 FBS teams for their first game or two of the season and get roflstomped...it's about the money.
