cats aren't stupid and understand when you don't want them to do something. it's enough to just say no a couple of times or grab them gently, put them away from the couch they were scratching, then say no. it's not that hard. same goes with cats jumping on countertops or anything else. you have to patiently correct them until they accept your rules. you can have a lovely cat who respects you if you respect them and are patient and give them your time.

"Yup....That cup of coffee being knocked down would have woken me up....and the paper being knocked down.....The lamp being knocked over would *definitely* woken me up!" and so-on-and-so-forth....I used to be a heavier sleeper, myself, but after I got my cat, I learned quickly that the smallest sound could be the precursor to his most destructive acts, so I know not to ignore him!
In the middle of the night when I can’t sleep, I open my iPad and laugh so hard I wake my husband up. Gads, you even have the little “chitter” noise cats make when they see bugs! Thanks for your wonderful humor and your exquisite knowledge of cats (we have 8).

Yep, this is pretty much what happens every time there's a fly in my living room. However, when it comes to spiders, my cat seems to have arachnophobia. xD
my cat Angel does this with roaches. she sees one she will chase, pounce, dig at it and bat it around untill its dead. but once it stops moving she looses interest. Alphonse does a similar thing with mice. but he doesn't really bite them he basically just chases them untill they die of fright or claps from the chase. once their dead he'll bring them to us and paw at them like hes telling us to fix them XD.
This makes me think of the time there was a moth flying around my living room and two of my cats were after it. (I have three.) The moth was flying above the coffee counter so one of them was crouching, ready to pounce for it, while the other one was coming around the other side of it, and crouched at the same time to pounce and they jumped for it at the exact same time and their chests hit each other like in a cartoon and then they ran off in different directions, irritated with each other. XD

My parents didn't declaw all 4 paws though, they left the back claws just in case my cats got out of the house. My cats are house cats, and they love my household very much. During the time they were getting declawed, they purred the whole time. Probably since I was petting them and kissing their foreheads the whole time, but still. So, 1. Don't tell me and my family what we should and shouldn't do. 2. My house can definitely handle our cats. 3. Don't discriminate others based off of your opinion.
