Yep the honesty Kent has is the best. He was a sworn flaxseed oil guy for years then avocado became affordable and he was down with the switch. I'm still a lard girl myself because that's what I always have on hand but it had it's downsides at it takes longer to process on the pan the first few times.
Dip it in a bucket of vinegar and let it sit till you see rust coming off. Then you'll see it bare metal clean. Once it's completely clean take it out then oil it immediately all over it.
I would have glass beaded this grille plate to kill the rust. Afterwards, I would have oiled it and heated it to regain its nonstick ability. No further treatment needed...

The best rust remover is vinegar. Don't want to grind it or use wool to scrub. You'll end up taking metal shavings. Not good.
