James Gunn’s character work is so incredible that he was able to get the audience to care about and root for characters who are written as jokes in the comics (Polka-Dot Man) or who never even existed in the comics in the first place (Ratcatcher 2). I’m so glad Warner Bros. gave him full creative control because it paid off so well and was unlike any superhero movie I’ve ever seen.

The best way I think I could describe it is that it’s a comic-book film. There’s been a lot of films that have the characters and even storyline’s from the comics into movies and have become some of the best in their genre, but The Suicide Squad just looks and feels like it’s a comic book disguised as a movie. Not saying that all comics are goofy, because that is completely not true, but in terms of embracing that goofy and ridiculous side of comics films try to stay away from, this film nails them.

They even all got matching tattoos and Ayer and Robbie were working on two more movies together before WB changed directions.
This is one of my favourite DC movies and felt fresh for superhero movies in general with the darker rating and the stakes of losing characters far higher. Very funny, good action and great characters. Hopefully more of this
This and "Nobody" both still remain my favorite action films of the year for being bonkers, yet stemming on using too much stupidity for brownie points from less demanding folks (looking at you Fast 9). In spite of my feelings toward 2016, I do hope Ayer gets to properly show what he had planned one day, even if I suspect it's not gonna be too much of a leap in quality. And yes, Harley Quinn is a solid show, yet even that still can't be completely free from WB meddling because god forbid the goofy, dark comedy show make a joke about Bruce going down, somebody think of the children watching while Harley Quinn is beating someone to death with a bat, I mean, that's just plain INAPPROPRIATE! Don't know if it was intentional or not, but TDK drinking Mr. Pibb brings up a familiar line from "Hell or High Water" about how only assholes drink Mr. Pibb and, well, probably not far off here.
Nanue had the best character development in the movie. He did what he was supposed to, made some friends along the way and had a bit o a shark attack here and there, got his nom nom's in. He got to be part of a team, accepting his shortcomings and domineering his strengths. He even got (which I hope we all saw coming, that betrayl from the exotic space squid roombas) betrayed and got to showcase his strength through (as I saw it) a bit of bandstanding as he ripped a human NPC in half. I really think that James has a sweet way of making the 'simpleton' of a squad the most well worked character. No other character's development is within an AU of King Shark's in this movie. EDIT: Am I alone in thinking that Peace Maker wasn't a bad guy, just driven by his moral set? Whether agreed upon or not, I think it's highlighted with his interactions with Nanue and even more so with his frustration of him making a C4 Peace Maker. (Not Verbatim) "Peace Maker" ". . .
