I still remember the developers geeking out how the boarding worked. Not just that you can do it but how you seamlessly go from an open sea combat scenario to a hand to hand combat scenario complete with parkourable mast, sails, and rigging. No load time or cutscene.
Ubisoft had 90% of Skull and Bones in Black Flag. People wanted that, but more. They wanted to make land on an island and explore caves and ruins for treasure. They wanted to battle other ships and board them. Also, Black Flag needs a remake/remaster with smoother animations and controls, also give it an expansion.
By the way watch Black Sails show ...locations and atmosphere are exactly as per the game. I bet after watching the series you'd jump back to this game.
Played through on PS4 a couple years back. It was still fantastic. Returned a couple months ago to clean up the platinum. Geez it was demanding, but such a great return to play it again. Finally got the plat after beating the Twin Elite Warships, such a sweet moment
I played black flag when it came out, loved it, but i lost my save game halfway. Didn't have the hearth to start over. Now, 11 years later, i finally decided to replay from the start and man, it's just as good, haven't had this much fun with a game in, i dunno, 11 years! It holds up great, highly recommended!
who didn't just have a smile here sailing at a sunset on foamy waters while your crew singing "lowland away", and on top that seeing a whale doing a flip and crashing into the water.... i swear, it felt so magical and fulfilling. it was really an experience no one would forget.
I'm sorry, but when I remember how great Black Flag was... I can't help but to think was Skull & Bones could've been. They literally had everything in order, all they had to do was remove the hidden blades. But nope, what we got was "Black Flag at home" because they removed all non-naval combat. I would've loved to have been able to board enemy ships and fight. I would've loved to have been able to explore sunken ships and underwater ruins. It's sad when I enjoy AC: Odyssey more than Skull & Bones.
my best experiences were when we were allowed to commandeer a galleon and black beard's ship....I don't remember it accurately, but those naval combat parts with the pirate music were awesome!
I’ll never forget the assassination missions where instead of sneaking around and taking out the target with the hidden blade I always just ran up and shot them in true pirate fashion. The cutscene would always show him using the hidden blade, which I found amusing as I went out of my way to use it as little as possible, and each mission counted as a success.
I’m replaying right now and it’s downright comical to assassinate people with the guns. The best was the traitor brother on Nassau and his Chinese Templar wife. Killed the brother and after the cutscene his wife appeared and I one tapped her before she could even run away and got another cutscene.
Did you know about Atlas ? not exactly the "Pirate Life" but more into the OPEN world where the devs kinda wanted to go for that but u know they didnt really help themselves, you choose into wherever u want to do, whether ship building and sailing ( Focus in Ocean ) or Do other stuff like base building ( in the Islands ). It is Amazing how vast the Ocean is moreover there is underwater Islands for extra Challenge. Forget the official sever... any other community servers with good mods(to ease with the grind) you will FEEEL the OCEAN. Spend hundreds of hours in the Ocean... It will make you FEEL how amazing are the Boats.
I actually just started it as well, for the first time... its certainly one of the best.. to me its really hard to choose though cause I like all of them a lot... even the recent massive ones they have made that everyone seems to hate.
I haven't even watched the video, i just recognized the thumbnail and saw the title, and I'm just gonna say "Yes". This is what Sid Meier's Pirates would look like in my imagination if it ever was remade. AC4 Black Flag is by far one of my most pleasurable playthroughs. So that's one big Yes from me.
I remember my older brother buying this and COD ghost when they dropped, he spent the whole day finishing the campaign while I watched and I stayed up all night playing Black Flag. Such an amazing game
They're remaking this game? that's ...weird, because it doesn't seem like the remake will accomplish much - except maybe change the feel of the game, which is top notch as far as Assassin's Creed goes.
Playing sid meiers pirates as a kid and actually being able to marry and escape prison with the help of your crew was such an iconic feeing. Gotta love it
@@justinlast2lastharder749 I would take out some of the silly mechanics like the courting, maybe make the solo combat a little more like an actual fighting game, or remove it, but I'd keep the mechanics of the raids, just make them work like AC4. There are all kinds of ways you could play with it, and remember, even the mini games that you didn't enjoy could be avoided if you wanted to. So, perhaps, keep them in and just update them for the people who want them, but don't make them necessary, so people who want to ignore them can.
Yeah there may have been pirate games made before that ( i don't know) but that's really where it all started. Like LOTR is said to have defined its genre and inspired almost every story that has followed, Sid Meier's Pirates is very much the same for me. Not really that surprising though as Sid Meier basically did the same for civilization and tycoon type games as well. Are there better games out there now? well ok yeah, but that was because of the limitations of hte technology of the time.
If it wasn't for those Online Only achievements, I would have platinum trophied this game. I did it ALL and could not get enough. Every sea shanty, upgrade, creature hunt, everything. I even played that Ubisoft mobile game. This era was probably the last time games were good good before the downturn crossed a gross threshold.
Ubisoft reminds me of that theory that a monkey randomly clicking buttons on a keyboard for eternity could technically at some point write a novel due to the entropy of the universe. The monkeys at Ubisoft made a few really solid games back in the day and now they are just randomly clicking buttons and putting out slop. They are totally unable to recreate any of their good games
You mentioned sea shanties as a by the way but for me it was one of the main things I actually did in the game. Hours spent in the open sea just listening to the shanties. Also upgrading your ship to face the legendary ships. The first time I met one by accident I was decimated in less than a minute
Did anyone here actually defeat a legendary ship alone? I thought I was pretty close a few times, but it felt like the encounter was rigged in so many ways that I eventually stopped trying.
@@tubensalat1453 It is possible but you have to upgrade your ship closer to the max and good strategies It's a bit like how to approach dark souls bosses The twin legendary ships are the ones that gave me a marathon for my money

A game commonly slept on is Sea Dogs, specifically City of Abandoned Ships. The game is old, with clunky AI, and rough graphics, but it is an amazing pirate game. You can trade resources, with an economy that changes over time. You can join the British, French, Spanish, or Dutch. There are multiple ships you can upgrade and you can even create a mini fleet for yourself.
Missed opportunity to not mention Sea Dogs 2! It's basically everything piratey about Black Glag, but with so much more options. You can fight as a pirate, or for the French, English, Portuguese, French, Spainish and more. We need a remaster of that. One of my all time favourites
A true hidden gem, I remember it had the Pirates of the Caribbean Logo for the old Xbox, but it had nothing to do with the PofC plot Lol, the fact you could make your own fleet,Visit City's enter buildings, it was ahead of its time, man you could fight and Invade Forts, for me it's still the best Pirate/SailShip Simulator I experienced , and way ahead of it's time, still Don understand how it didn't get the love it (for me) deserved
Played again recently after the Skull & Bones debacle. It holds up big time. Your comment on the sea shanties is also spot on. I collected them all just to hear my crew sing them.
I was a late starter on the franchise and I ended up playing AC 3, then the Ezio Trilogy, and then Black Flag, in a roughly year long period back in 2013-2014 and I was just living in Assassin's Creed and loving it. Black flag seemed to cap my AC experience with something I knew very well that also felt totally different because of the ship combat and such.
It's the various dynamic, weather effects during a battle, without the game appearing to slowing down or stuttering, that impresses me. When you spy a worthy target. Relentlessly bombarding that ship with cannon and mortar, filling the air with acrid, blinding cannon smoke. Leaving the wheel to 'climb' the rigging via the mast lift, in order to take out the snipers. Jumping over and climbing up to cut down their flag. Then sprinting down the rigging, leaping off for the double take down of the officers. Finally finishing off by clearing the decks in violent, bloody, CQC. All the while dealing with a lightening storm raging, gale force winds, waves the size of houses and violent water spouts. Also all this fun from a 10 yr old game and for just £8 from CEX. Peace All --There is a lot of interesting AC lore and info contained in the various staff computers in the real world sections, locked behind some 'fun', but mundane, hacking mini games. So would say it's worth doing these sections, just for that--
I like it. Probably 3. I've played like 5 of them. But for me it's Ac origins, ac syndicate, and then black flag. Or switch it with ac rogue. But don't remember much of rogue now. Remember that Port comes before Starboard alphabetically (P before S). The same can be said about Left and Right (L and R). Just remember that this applies to orientation. You have to face the front or bow. Stern is the back. I remember bow is the front because bowing is bending your head forward.
When I was in the Navy, for those who just could not get it intuitively they just said, "remember left is shorter than right, and Port is shorter than Starboard"
The AC game series blew me away so many times with what they achieved. Black Flag was epic for all the reasons you mentioned, but even AC 3 is hands down one of the best ever games I've played. No other character has ever felt more lithe and flowing and powerful. It had so many aspects that were amazing, including the ship combat and the village building.
AC Black Flag was my first pirate game, never played Sid Meier's Pirates. But despite that AC Black Flag was revolutionary to me. I remember sailing almost to the border of the map and just let the ship to drift only to listen the crew singing the shanties. And about the Sid Meier's Pirates vs AC Black Flag, I remember when I was just a kid playing Sunset Riders on my Nintendo and wondering if someday we'll have an outlaw game like that and then years later...Boom Red Dead Redemption, man... can't describe the emotion.
I'm still waiting for a proper actual fighting game for One Piece. The last one we got was Burning Blood, which is sucks. I want a FighterZ treatment for One Piece. Or at least if they want to make another arena fighting game, make it like Naruto Storm/Demon Slayer HC
Was playing Black Flag again recently. It’s the one I’m mostly to jump back into of all the AC games. Currently on the hunt for level 70 Men o’ War to add to my fleet, which you can only get by being at the max wanted level. I am beyond 100% so just creating fun missions for myself because I enjoy being in this virtual world so much.
I want From Software to make a pirate themed game. Just imagine how grand it would be. Having naval boss battles against the likes of Blackbeard and Captain Kidd or against legendary creatures like the Kraken, and/or Davy Jones. It would be sheer epic.
It's not a worse game, it's a completely different game. Black Flag is a single player game, Skull and Bones is a multiplayer to play with other people and against other people. And it's a lot of fun being that game. Some people just criticize it so much because it didn't correspond to their expectations for a single player game, which it is not.
Thank you for this! One thing: In the timeline of pirate games' presentation, I think you forgot a gem for its era: Pirates of the Caribbean (2003), which was way ahead of its time.
THE PIRATE LEVEL ON SLY 3 WAS SO FUN! that game was single player but that mode was so 🔥 they had a 2 player version not attached to the campaign so you could play it with friends anytime
Skull and Bones had all the chances to be the best one, but somehow Ubisoft decided to not to turn it into an open world experience as it needed to be. But turned Ghost Recon into an open world experience when it never needed to.
You say that like it is a bad thing. Out of all the microtransactions companies shove into their games ubisoft ass creed, well at least since origins is one of the "best" (least worse) They allow you to earn and find digital currencies in game and in their meta points system and actually get the cosmetics in game. Yes they are timed base so you cant just get exactly what you want at any time but they allow you to earn stuff in game by playing. That way people like me who never give them a penny for cosmetic "on disc DLC" still get to earn them in game, and the idiots who enable this crap because of FOMO can just buy whatever they want. Only other company I have seen do microtransactions better than ubisoft is blizzards overwatch 1...which they then did a complete 180 and ruined any good faith by shitting the game down and going super greedy with the next game. Damn ass creed valhallah they released the free isle of skye DLC and so much of the opal currency you use for the MTX cosmetics in that game was everywhere on the island, its all free too.

Rogue is a special case. It's sole reason for existing was to sell a game to people who didn't have a PS4 yet to play Unity. It was a little extra for me too as I was one of those people who didn't have a PS4 yet and my mother is from Nova Scotia, so I spent a lot of time up north as a kid.

I still have it installed on my PS5 , not only the best pirates game, the best Assassin's Creed, I've sunk hundreds of hours in it, the soundtrack during the legendary Ships is just...mindblowing
Black flags entire naval gameplay system is phenomenal, the ocean, the weather, the wildlife, the combat... I can just sail around for hours doing nothing and love it.
As someone with nearly 300 hours played for Skull and Bones, I'm still surprised by all the things it doesn't have when comparing it to Black Flag. We don't have the ability to walk our ship, we have regular weapons like cannons, mortars, rockets, but we don't have anything like the chain shot cannons, when we go to disembark, its a small cinematic cut. This was the game that was supposed to give us what players wanted from black flag. I understand wanting two separate games, but I would love to see different things. I feel like the ship combat is a bit better in Black Flag.
I had this in ps4, I never beat it and never didn’t spend a lot of time on it, I just wasn’t gaming that hard back then, but I DO remember how freakin awesome every second of it was. It was so immersive and actually felt like I was a pirate haha. I always think about it and wish I could play it again…now that I’ve been reminded by it, I’m def gonna see about playing this again. @@Penguinmanereikel All DLC actually, but only for switch.
Skull and bones would be good if there was more to it than ship combat.
They’re remastering black flag in case you didn’t know
Black flag is my favorite game of all time. The story and the setting were perfect.
Black Flag, not Black flag
By the way watch Black Sails show ...locations and atmosphere are exactly as per the game. I bet after watching the series you'd jump back to this game.
Black Sails was legendary @@pasullica
It happens that I'm not a great fan of AC games but i played this one to the core and i loved it
If you enjoyed this game, I recommend trying Odyssey, it has ship combat and beautiful sailing locale.
B/c it's not really an AC game. It's more like Pirate's Creed, TBH.
@@believeinmatterodyssey is trash worst in the series after valhalla
@sherKhan-qq7cy Nah odyssey is a very good game, just as many have said a lot of times not the best ASSASSINS creed game.
Same
Played through on PS4 a couple years back.
Absolutely some of the most atmospheric moments in gaming, in this game.
Black flag is so good one of the greats of entertainment in general not just games, also it aged like fine wine 🍷🏴☠️
For pirate fans, recommend watching Black Sails. Really great show.
One of the best I watched.

Fck yea

Ship War while in the storm was perfect feeling. Oh I miss playing this
Black Flag was the most fun I had in Assassins creed in a very long time
I'm sorry, but when I remember how great Black Flag was...
Yeah, Odyssey still holds up, on land and sea.
@@landonewts odyssey never held up
my best experiences were when we were allowed to commandeer a galleon and black beard's ship....I don't remember it accurately, but those naval combat parts with the pirate music were awesome!
Blackbeard's ship was something else, I loved that mission
@@ashishchoudhary6982 yeahh...i think his broadside cannons fire 3 rounds at a time if I remember correct, that was so awesome!
Just started this game. Awesome! Came with my Xbox One in 2015 and I never gave it a try. Definitely a different experience. 👍
I just started playing Black Flag a day ago. I have 5 hours on it and I absolutely love it. Best AC by a mile
I actually just started it as well, for the first time... its certainly one of the best.. to me its really hard to choose though cause I like all of them a lot... even the recent massive ones they have made that everyone seems to hate.
Disney infinity Pirates of the Caribbean had some really good Ship combat
I haven't even watched the video, i just recognized the thumbnail and saw the title, and I'm just gonna say "Yes".
This is what Sid Meier's Pirates would look like in my imagination if it ever was remade. AC4 Black Flag is by far one of my most pleasurable playthroughs.
So that's one big Yes from me.
I remember my older brother buying this and COD ghost when they dropped, he spent the whole day finishing the campaign while I watched and I stayed up all night playing Black Flag. Such an amazing game
Black Flag is a phenomenal game and, for my money, THE best depiction of being a pirate in gaming.
Just started playing black flag for the first time 2 days ago. Really enjoying it. Hope the remake ubisoft is working on keep to the roots.
Same, dude!!
Are they actually remaking this??
They're remaking this game? that's ...weird, because it doesn't seem like the remake will accomplish much - except maybe change the feel of the game, which is top notch as far as Assassin's Creed goes.
Remake lmao. People asking for remakes are part of the problem.
I own it on 360 and Xbox One... Want that a remake?
Playing sid meiers pirates as a kid and actually being able to marry and escape prison with the help of your crew was such an iconic feeing. Gotta love it
Now imagine all of that with the actual free roam mechanics of AC4 when you're on land.
Yeah, but it was a mini game slog. I hated those damn mini games.
@@justinlast2lastharder749 Same. I stopped playing because of those damn mini games.
@@tubensalat1453 It is possible but you have to upgrade your ship closer to the max and good strategies
It's a bit like how to approach dark souls bosses
The twin legendary ships are the ones that gave me a marathon for my money
🤝No side quest has ever moved me as much as sea shanty collection
@@stevenochieng960 Yeah, I had my ship maxed out, still... They zoom in, so I can't fully take advantage of my mortars, they handle like a shopping cart: zero turn radius & no delay whatsoever for their maneuvers, so I can't out-maneuver them, they accelerate like a jet fighter if they want to disengage...
Then again, I failed against regular dark soul enemies, so I guess I'm just too casual.
I played this 7 months ago and i had a blast playing it. Still in 2024 this game has great graphics.
Imagine rockstar making a pirate game....
Don’t do that, do t put silly dreams in my head
Rdr2 but pirate is a game that would eat my free time for the next decade
There is an awesome mod pack for the game on pc called new horizons
Black Flag is my favorite game of all time
SAME 😭🙏🏴☠️
Played again recently after the Skull & Bones debacle.
First game I've played on the PS4 back in the day. Still holds up, and I'm soo happy we'll finally get remake of this masterpiece.
I remember accidentally sailing into one of the legendary ships at low level and getting absolutely destroyed.
Lol. Same here. I feel you 😂
Unfortunately, it's the reason why I never finished the game 😂.
Yep I accidentally sailed into the area with the 2 legendary ships I got creamed without firing a single shot 😅😅
Imagine if rockstar made a pirate game.
They should
I still have my OG boxed copy but, for anyone who wants to play this masterpiece, it’s under $10 on PlayStation Store. 🏴☠️
It’s included with PlayStation Premium subscription.
It's free with PS Essential
So glad you mentioned Sly Cooper 3, such a good game!
Peace All
--There is a lot of interesting AC lore and info contained in the various staff computers in the real world sections, locked behind some 'fun', but mundane, hacking mini games. So would say it's worth doing these sections, just for that--
I still hold firm that AC4: Black Flag is one of the BEST ACs entries. It’s in my top 3.
I like it. Probably 3. I've played like 5 of them. But for me it's

Remember that Port comes before Starboard alphabetically (P before S). The same can be said about Left and Right (L and R). Just remember that this applies to orientation. You have to face the front or bow. Stern is the back. I remember bow is the front because bowing is bending your head forward.
I always remember because “port” and “left” have the same amount of letters. 😉
This is actually very helpful and easy to remember. Thanks!
Say Starboard like sta-R-board…”R” is in RIGHT so….. Port is short like Left, Star says “R” like Right😊
When I was in the Navy, for those who just could not get it intuitively they just said, "remember left is shorter than right, and Port is shorter than Starboard"
It's funny how I started replaying this game a week ago, and then this video is made lol. We need a remastered!
Always loved the naval combat in AC Odyssey - One of the most fun open world games I have ever played
The pirate genre is one of the most underutilized genres in gaming in my opinion. I'd love a developer like Rockstar Games to make a pirate game.
The intro soundtrack gave me goosebumps
AC Black Flag was my first pirate game, never played Sid Meier's Pirates. But despite that AC Black Flag was revolutionary to me. I remember sailing almost to the border of the map and just let the ship to drift only to listen the crew singing the shanties. And about the Sid Meier's Pirates vs AC Black Flag, I remember when I was just a kid playing Sunset Riders on my Nintendo and wondering if someday we'll have an outlaw game like that and then years later...Boom Red Dead Redemption, man... can't describe the emotion.

How someone could make a worse game when all they had to do was lore swap an existing game they made 7 years ago will always boggle me.
It's not a worse game, it's a completely different game. Black Flag is a single player game, Skull and Bones is a multiplayer to play with other people and against other people. And it's a lot of fun being that game. Some people just criticize it so much because it didn't correspond to their expectations for a single player game, which it is not.
Yes. Absolutely. Nothing compares to Black flag.
Don't worry I'm sure Ubisoft will release a remake....and monetize everything in this game.

Out of all the microtransactions companies shove into their games ubisoft ass creed, well at least since origins is one of the "best" (least worse)
They allow you to earn and find digital currencies in game and in their meta points system and actually get the cosmetics in game.

Kingdom Hearts 2? Kingdom Hearts 3 did it even better. You had an exploreable sea with naval battles.
I couldn't care less about pirate games, but listening to the joy in Falcon's voice while talking about them: excellent.

The ending of Ac4 as well as the story of Mary Read were fantastic have always held them in my top 5 games 12 years later I’m 23 and still waiting for Ubisoft capture this feeling again
Black Flag is one of the few games I’ve triple-dipped on. Over the years I have bought and played it on WiiU, switch, and current Xbox.

I loved that game as a kid.
never took the time to play AC4. untill a week ago. Played alot of the Ezio series, AC origins and AC odyssey. and i must say, AC4 is a banger! Back to the old style of AC, and somehow also very different. more of a pirate game than an AC game if you ask me. but man does the game hold up to this day. Funny that you made video about it whilst i'm playing it for the first time.
After watching the pirates of the caribbean movies I always wanted to play a pirate game and when this came out it was a dream come true. Bought this game on four different platforms, worth the purchase every time.
Sly 3 Pirate level had no business going that hard

Just thinking about playing Black Flag lifts my mood. Such fond memories.
In full this time
i tried playing Black Flag again a few times, getting past the fisrt part wherre you are stuck in Havana is a nightmare
When I saw the title of this video I thought "Oh man, please let there be a pirate game on the level of Black Flag". Then I watched the video...should've known. It truly is a masterpiece in the pirate game genre.
There were several pirate games around the time of Pirates. Port Royal is one I can remember, but there were a couple more. Pirates and Pirates Gold were by far the best of this era, and Black Flag is one of my favorite AC games as well. Might have to play it again soon.
