ive been on that road in a bus..for about 14 hours from cajamarca to chachapoyas. most nervous experience. and first thing in the morning the valley is full of fog with barely any visibility.
The amount of danger of the road is inversely related to the amount the government cares about the citizens who drive on that road. Peru could widen the roads, maintain them better, and put in guard rails, but browner highland citizens and the poor are considered disposeable people. And so, there are microbus an truck crashes every week. It is a horrible death - to be killed in a tin can of a rickety vehicle plunging to the abyss.
+James Brown - The road has been paved with asphalt and it looks much better, but it is still narrow which makes it dangerous. Watch DE CELENDIN A BALSAS: CARRETERA ANGOSTA Y PELIGROSA.
Did this road in a Citroen 2CV in 2018. Very interesting road with spetacular changes of climate and vegetation due to fast change of elevation (3800m-800m). Didn't feel dangerous though. The ruta 106 from Yanama to the east was a scary one after heavy rain.
+ysmbl its really scary! there is not enough room for two trucks on most of the country roads of the andes, but every so often there is a large "pull over" area. So ifyou have two truks coming there is a bit of a "chicken" game about who is going to back up to the pull over area, especially if one of the drivers is being a jerk, or is drunk, or simply doesn't know the informal rules of the road. there is a rule about which driver should back up -- it depends on if you are in the ascent or descent if I'm not mistaken - one of those is supposed to yield to the other and back up.
Definitely, easily, the best drivers I've ever seen were in Peru. Hands down !!
respect to those drivers
Wow, but the view is amazing!
in Nepal also, there is many difficulty and challanging roads....

A bus just fell from one such road killing around 50 people in 3 January 2018.

crazy
One driver has to back up until he reaches a spot to pull over and let the other vehicle pass
Estuve por ahí...les sugiero a los amantes de la adrenalina
