  • Loyal Democrat Joe Lieberman, who was Al Gore's Veep nominee in 2000 but gave up the recount in Florida in 2008 travelled with GOP nominee John McCain, endorsed him, spoke at the GOP convention, and was almost McCain's Veep nominee. Dramatization from Game Change.

Even with Lieberman on the ticket, there's no way Democrats would have voted for a bipartisan ticket over Obama.

McCain's key problem was the baggage of Bush's 8 years in office. Everyone was sick of him and wanted a change. In retrospect, it didn't turn out to be much of a change.

I think the idea was to get the undecided voters, at the cost of some republican voters.

John McCain should have picked Joe Lieberman anyway. He still would have lost, but at least he would save himself the embarrassment of picking Sarah Palin.

McCain was gonna lose no matter what. After eight years of Bush and the way his presidency ended, it was a Democrat’s time to shine.

@@zackcross7190 that’s what I said. At least he wouldn’t have embarrassed himself and made Sarah Palin as prominent as she is

The thing is, this ticket would’ve done a hell of a lot better as a one term unity ticket like the guy suggested once the financial crisis happened, then whatever the fuck the McCain/Palin campaign was

A McCain/Lieberman ticket would only win in an Aaron Sorkin show.

Compared to Palin, Lieberman was Abe Lincoln.

That's called being naive. The desire for power outweighs everything in politics.

I think the point is that he realizes that. The key part is "conservatives will bolt." He was pointing out that with Lieberman in VP on the ticket, staunch conservatives wouldn't even bother to go out to vote because they wouldn't want to vote for a former Democrat as VP. Voters don't pick who's in the cabinet, so the president choosing who they really want for a more bipartisan, balanced agenda into cabinet rather VP without worrying about discouraging voters is a reasonable idea.

You have to wonder if all the critics were only saying don't pick Lieberman because of the impact on McCain getting elected, and not because they didn't think Lieberman would be a good VP.

If Joe Lieberman is a loyal Democrat, then I'm the center fielder for the Yankees. Lieberman is a six-time winner of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Memorial Cup for political transvestism.

I would've loved McCain/Lieberman. Lieberman is a terrific person and politician. A move to the center; I would've voted for them in 2008 if I could.

If Lieberman was more liberal Vice President Gore would be not just former VP he would also be today a former president.

The base was concerned that John wasn’t a true conservative!? I’m sorry but did republican voters seriously not take that into account during the primaries!? Did they even bother to ask what was in his platform!?

To AntiBushObamaRomney, Lieberman is no longer in the Senate. He retire in 2013 instead of running again.

Even though McCain picked Palin. This clip proves McCain is a liberal democrat.
