AI is changing scouting in football - but how?

- Kane, Mbappe or Haaland - who is the best fit for Manchester City? Let's ask a machine! Artificial intelligence measures the players, evaluates the numbers and gives its verdict - yes, it even calculates the 'chemistry factor' of how well each player would get on with the guys in Pep's Man City team. Or is it all just mumbo jumbo, and nothing beats the good old scout on the sidelines?

The one who can combine both will create the most successful teams
Facts
No question...gotta be both. Data justifies the human scouting.
Data enables the scouts to make the right decisions. Couldn’t agree more
This is already being carried out by clubs like Man City, Liverpool, Bayern Munich etc.
The fact that Haaland is going to man city and that the Ai was correct that tell us a lot
Yep, seems Man City also agreed with the AI Abacus report.
Artificial intelligence will never be able to tell if a player has a bad influence in the locker room!
I think human scouting is always better, but u can always combine both and make it perfect( just like AC Milan do)
For example in china with the social credit system, where everything is monitored, it could work. Not that i wanna suggest implementing something similar.
Don't say never. But that would most probably invade privacy of players so can't happen not because it is impossible technologically now or perhaps in the near future but because of rights and laws.
Don't say never. Technologically speaking it definetly can however there's just not enough data (thankfully). For now as you said scouts are irreplaceable

Great video! Realistically, algorithms will takeover all forms of thinking in the future. It's already happening in just about every online platform.
Most of the games these days look scripted. Everything is planed in advance and personally I ain't with it.
I Don't think so. For sure a lot of administration work will be less. But you always need people to controll and help if there are problems that are out of range of ai.
It would be a failure of epic proportions. Machine will always have limitations.
@@MKB720P Who told you such stupid things?
mmmmmmmmmhh, i highly doubt, mind you that algorithms are also created with biases, xG parameters for example, how did you measure *quality* of chances? Of course they'll always improve this and creating better and more accurate models, but model is still a model and bias is still bias, i'm not sure if we'll ever go past this, at least in the near future.
Also data is just that: data, how people/clubs act on that data is what matters, unless we've entered a full AI-run society, i don't see this kind of fully-automated analyses will happen in the foreseeable future.
It’s not a case of one or the other. Both can be combined and used effectively but their pros and cons have to be considered.
Pros of scouting: You can observe psychological factors, how they operate within the team and whether they would fit into your clubs culture or philosophy. Whilst Neymar is of course better than probably all of city and Liverpools front three he just wouldn’t suit the environments which the management have built over the years and thus become less effective. A player may not have a great number of statistics to observe but they pass the eye test based on things like first touch, positioning and awareness and other mental/technical aspects which can’t be measured.
Cons of scouting: Biases i.e. certain coaches or scouts may prefer to sign players from a similar country or background as them. Hype, we see a lot of players signed because they’re in hot form but they don’t actually suit the system or style of the team they’re joining.
Pros of Analysis: Very objective. Statistics and numbers don’t lie or have biases, allows your to measure how efficient a player is and rank or compare them against others.
Cons of Analysis: Very objective so as mentioned it doesn’t take into account personality, style& technique which are all important factors. The criteria for certain stats are not clear I.e. “key passes” or “goal scoring chance” because these things can vary player for player. 5-10 yards of space outside of the box is a goal scoring chance for someone like KDB but not for someone like Jorginho.
Yeah I definitely have time to read this comment .
Actually, key passes and goal-scoring chance are not based on which player is acting on the chance. It depends on historical data. Data has been collected - for a while - for every goal scored, pass made, interception attempted, save effected, etc. for a certain league. This data gives a probability value for a pass made into a certain zone of leading to a goal-scoring opportunity. If a player keeps making passes into that zone, they will (and should) rank high on key passes; irrespective of whether their team is capitalising on the passes.
Similarly, if a player keeps getting into positions from where goals have been scored (repeatedly, over time; according to the data), then the fact that their teammates can't find them with a pass shouldn't count against them!
But, in general, *as of now* the AI's are incapable of judging psychological factors. With that I agree!
There’s also the club factor and how it’s run steave Walsh ex Leicester scout went to Everton I believe and let’s just say they didn’t bring the best players in, where as Leicester seem to be doing pretty good being very well run, think this should of been mentioned
Mbappe has great chemistry with Benjamin Mendy, they should sign him
to jail FC? 😂😂 on a serious note though the french team will win the world cup with the same team as 2018 and inshallah mendy is out by the time, ready and fit

I would love to say this techno mumbo jumbo and most projection than facts, but my club Liverpool did this and discovered Mane and Salah. They looked which players in Europe had the most successful dribbles, created the most chances, had a high goal to shot ratio and had a track record of hardly being injured, showing which players were most durable. Mane and Salah were the two players who topped the list for this criteria and he rest is history. The story goes Klopp wanted to buy Brandt for Liverpool using his Bundesliga knowledge and Liverpool's transfer committee and analysis team overruled Klopp and said Salah would be a better purchase statistically. That god for that for given how mediocre German players have been in the Premier League for the last 10 years.
brandt being german has nothing to do with how good he is. sounds like you're the one projecting
Who knows where Brandt would be now had he taken that path, Delboy0?! The circumstances shape the people, don’t they? And Mo Salah was only Mo Salah before he became Mo Salah😁
@@A-Port-In-Any-Storm You right, but him being from the German League does effect how good he is. And as most German players start in the Bundesliga. German players tend to struggle with higher athleticism and quality of the Premier League, so do not perform at the same level as they did in England. Only Rudiger and Gundogan buck that trend because Rudiger played in Italy before moving to England and Gundogan adapted after 3 seasons.
@@dwkickoff I'm pretty sure he would have been like Havertz and Werner in the Premier League. Mostly ineffective and inconsistent. It is not like he is starring for Dortmund now.
@@Delboy0 Tell that to Emmanuel Dennis who scored 1 goal in over 10 matches for Koln and right now he has second or third most goals contributions in PL while playing for Watford
Wenger clearly the greatest scouter ever among manager
algorithms cant factor in a players ability to adapt to different play styles .
Wow pretty good job DW
Football Manager Game should add statistic if the player play with the same language, been playing together on the other team before and similar age for scouting report
and also should consider that no every player stuck their development if they already past 24th years old
First part: adaptability
Second part: yeah, true
Oh, wait, didn't see the scouting report part, sorry
Didn't AI say that Germany would win the world Cup?
people don't realize not all signings need not necessarily mean for sporting reasons, some are just for selling sponsorships, merchandise ,PR etc (commercial reasons). look at United's signings for example.
6:12 gotta lower Mbappe's score a bit since his old teammate, Benjamin Mendy is now officially signed for Prison FC
This man thinks he is playing Football Manager
EA sports has always done this 👍
Just like Liverpool using Moneyball
The ui is like FM
Who is going to insert the data? Surely an AI will make it at players that play under camera. But what happens to newcomers?
I can't understand why people want an AI
Intelligence is the only thing that makes humans stand apart. We
shouldn't try to create our own alternative
Because of human bias mostly, AI is already an alternative in a lot of fields, and it'll keep expanding
AI is used to prevent human mistakes. A machine-learned model can achieve significantly better results in a short amount of times. But you need a lot of data to prevent bias in your models.
Because AI is more efficient in way that humans LACK.
Hi Jon Willis any chance you've scouted a midfielder for United? Our midfield is horrible and needed work since forever
🤣
It's about combining the two not using them separately
This video will bang
It actually makes sense…better stats can probably be proportional to hard work
Scout looks from technical to attitude skills and how he work with others. AI could identify the skills and technical but not those attitude skills which is main thing in big club
Attitudes can change. Technical cannot.
All the best Jack to your football career
Might take over DW.
A.i cannot predict off the field behaviour .example: Guendouzi

it is always a false binary. Data can be really useful when it comes to signing players for the first team. But when it comes to signing players for the academy data has very little use since there is going to be very little data available.
So "the wally with the brolly" was a trailblazer?
Boy, how opening an umbrella at the wrong time in the wrong place can ruin everything, huh?
Poor fella
no machine can replace monchi, the best ever
Mbappe speaks English fluently wth 😂
This gives me strong money ball vibes
They will have to work in coordination. They can never replace people.
So basically AI is good for help but don't totally depend on it.
Only parameter Manchester United will use is Instagram followers of players😂
Now we can relate the movie moneyball to reality
AI?
I believe in a perfect blend of human knowledge and observations and AI assistance.
When they said he is the regional scout for man united and I said oh wow that is why they buy everyone and never win
Haaland AND mbappe are coming to rma.
this abacus program doesn't seem revolutionary at all. These are all considerations that have been being made for years in new signings. I'm extremely confused how this is changing the game. This IS where the game is.
edit: in any well run club, I should add.
Bro you don’t work behind the scenes so you won’t know what’s changing🥱..were regular fans
I think the truly up to date or trend setting AI providers won't show their methods and algorithms on a youtube channel but rather in board rooms of potential buyers.
@@markusz4447 good point

FOOTBALL MANAGER
Guardiola,not Guardioula!!!
So there’s proof that this AI actually works. Hence, Manchester City and Haaland.
I think using Hazard as a viable example isn't particularly correct since at the time Hazard was at the peak of his career in his prime years, him getting the injuries he did isn't something humans nor AI can predict
Is this paid promotion
7 months later and Haaland does hit the ground running (10 goals in 6 games for City)!
Might be SUPPORTING decisions but the AI is not always right: said Haaland is not compatible with the tactics of crosses and counter attacking?...any human could tell you that's so wrong!
Let's be honest bayern and Liverpool they both using data and scout and now they are the best well managed teams in world right now I think real Madrid is starting to do the same because in recently years they are avoiding shitty transfers like hazard or not spending a lot like barça
Or maybe stop buying African and Eastearn European players just because they are tall and strong and maybe start searching players that actually knows how to pass a ball.
@@amkathegod8422 who tf cares

the ai breakdown of the chemistry is nothing new, it's nothing an individual wouldn't be able to tell you, it's also incredibly easy to say that Erling Haaland will be exceptional in the premier league given the quality he brings, without data it doesn't tell us anything, it can't help us find a diamond in the rough
Jesé*not Hézei and it's Rodríguez not Rodriguez
What about does in Africa ?
BUT CAN AI PREDICT , WHICH CLUB HAALAND SHOULD GO TO FOR HIM TO BE THE BEST?

Karma is true
well, whatever you do and create, real people who enjoy good football will know who is a player and who's not. haaland doesn't look entertaining to me nor does mbappe(with psg) but i appreciate players like st maximin, mahrez, dembele and other ballers because no matter what the score is, entertainment is the goal in football and if you think else then you're a little stat kid and don't deserve a debate and all this is said by someone who is 17 so yh
It means nothing if you don’t win championships
@@robert2690 loool winning cups is the most discomfiture thing stat players go through. ballers might have luck one day and the next not, but your stat players are expected to do good whatever the match is which is really embarrassing for you fanboys
@@robert2690 I'll have to disagree with this and can give you an example: I follow the English Premier League not only for the teams that may win every season, but also for the ones that compete and escape relegation. Not all the teams have the squad and budget to win the championship, however, escaping relegation and staying in the EPL for another season is a competition on its own right. While for teams like Man City or Chelsea the goal (or the expectation) is to win the competition, for other teams the goal is to stay in the EPL or even to get a spot in the European competitions. So, winning titles is not the only measure for a good performance in the season.
Iniesta has no stats and look at him. Stats don’t always speak for what’s going on in the pitch. Ai is just a support tool.
Not everyone is iniesta so...
Salah and firminho were signed to play together based off these metrics and numbers.
Managers are over rated
Liverpool
Is the best
Value for money buying $30-50 million
Man city is the best if u are willing paying big buck $70-$80m
Liverpool buy salah for $35million but they have the same quality as mancity players at $100m
Well, other than it stealing jobs, and it being prone to hacks... For heavy price... Which clubs actually do have resources for... And can't trace back.. it shouldnt be a problem... But then this would kill the human factor.... Of the game.. :p..
What Jobs? Low wage jobs?
Then they can have it.
Stop being overdramatic

Meanwhile PSG wants all the top player whether they can defend or not or they fit in the coach's system. That shows how eager are they to win that Cl
Was Ronaldo, Messi, KDB picked by AI? No.
Neither was Pele😁
No, AI will only improve scouting overall. There are so many variables that can inflate an algorithm’s predictions which would require human interference to steer the decision. How many ‘new Messis’ we’ve heard of in the last decade that failed to meet expectations in the last decade?
Can AI help scouting?

If that picture of the AI says Haaland is better than Mbappe, then that means AI isn't as intelligent as we thought..
Or maybe your just decided to use those graphics to influence us to think Haaland is better, which is an even bigger problem.
It didn't say that, it said Haaland will probably be a better fit for Man City, probably be different for different clubs such as Madrid or Liverpool
