I can’t remember if I mentioned it, but we have gotten soooo many garden fresh vegetables from friends this year and could not be more grateful! This saved us money, too, this month. 😅😅😅. It’s expensive to eat these days. Love hearing what you are doing to stay in budget or at least TRY.

Sarah, I hope you are taking time for yourself and allowing yourself to grieve your loss. I know keeping busy helps but I don’t want you to suddenly collapse. I’m keeping you in my thoughts and prayers (I’m genuinely worried about you and really care). Don’t wait for it all to catch up with you. I got sick in college because I ignored my emotions and paid a price.

I get the highlights hidden picture books. Then I take them apart and put the pages in sheet protectors in a 3 ring binder. That makes it where the kids can find pictures and circle them with crayons markers and wipe them off with a Kleenex when done. That way several can do the same puzzle. It also makes a good quiet church activity.

Hi Sarah, Did you know watermelon cubes freeze beautifully? I do that for dessert, instead of prepared desserts. The frozen watermelon seems very much more sweet than the fresh. I can eat a whole plateful of fresh watermelon, but can only manage about half a cup of frozen, because it is so sweet. I have started using jarred mushrooms to make up space in meat meals...a 1:1 ratio of mushrooms to meat. You can get a 7 oz glass jar of mushroom slices at Dollar Tree for $1.25, so $2.86 per pound. I also do the same things with beans. Beans are relatively cheap, if you buy dried beans, and they work beautifully to stretch meat dishes too! I hope this helps. Praying for better days!

Maybe next year you can start a small box garden. Start small so it doesn’t overwhelm you. Four boxes with left over wood that you have and dirt. Seriously, then you already have it there. Plant a few discounted fruit trees at the end of the season. Or, you can come to my house ( there is just 2 of us) and I can give you all of the pears and tomatoes your family can eat! We feed the migrants that work around here. They are so nice and they have been coming for years now. It makes me feel good.

Hi Sarah, you do a wonderful job feeding your family healthy and tasty meals and snacks. I'm finding it hard to afford enough food so I have cut down to two small meals a day and I drink water if I feel hungry. I can't continue like this long term so I'll have to figure something out if I live much longer. God has already given me 12 years longer than the two my lifelong specialists gave me at age 32. Food is very expensive in my country and I've not been able to work as a school teacher or be a foster mum for 14 years. I lost both my parents in the last few years and in some ways I really want to be with them but I trust in God that I still have a purpose for being here. God bless you, solo, your gorgeous kids and your extended family.

Finally! Another mom that shops like me. Im not feeding as many people as you (family of 6), but I too shop once a month here in Canada and noticed we spend a lot less shopping this way than if I were to shop weekly or bi-weekly.

  • @jrcunnin76
    @jrcunnin76 2 месяца назад +5

The main ways I am shopping to stay on budget is shopping sales and markdowns and eating seasonally. I know you like only shopping once a month, but weekly sales can save so much money! For example, we love apples, but they have not been sale, but peaches have been. So we have adjusted and are eating more peaches right now. Or, when pork butt is on sale, I buy extra for the freezer.
I challenge you to a grocery store challenge! Try shopping weekly with sales and see if that helps your grocery budget!

What I do, which is top priority is make sure I have all the fresh fruit and veg. It is hard to say with what in season though. After that it’s the proteins. I hardly ever go down the center lanes. I just do the perimeter which is where all the healthy foods are.

Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a wonderful week.
The only way my family of four is staying within a budget is by shopping weekly sales and working our meals around those items. This week plumcots were on sale and the family got to try something new. Also my local store will sell produce 50 percent off. Requires more store visits but doable since we live within five minutes of our grocery store.

When I used to work at a Christian camp. I used to use the leftover meats from breakfast and lunches to make salads so what I would do is the barbecue chicken I'd make barbecue chicken salad. And the honey ham after breakfast I would grind that up put some mustard mayo and relish and add some shredded and chopped celery and carrots. I do the same thing with the chicken salad. Also leftover home fries and there's not usually a leftover bacon but if I did I'd add some of that in there. For potato salad

Sarah, I don't know if you've tried this, but reserving a section of the wall in your school area for a mid-to-large piece of Peg Board could help you out a bunch. First of all, many of your packaged pens, etc. have holes in the top of the pack, and can hang. Also, there is a huge variety of shelves, "small buckets," and other attachments to keep the small, but frequently needed items "close at hand." Something to consider when storing things out of the reach of the "littles" when you're not able to watch everything--scissors, etc.
I used to have one in my craft room, and it was amazing. It was on the front of a shelf unit, so I was able to hang and childproof in the front with pegs; and and stack paper, workbooks, and similar items on the shelves in the back. Yes, I am OCD. I love the Bic lead pencils. You advance the lead by turning the point of the pencil. It's much harder to break the lead, and erasers stay put. These are disposable (probably recyclable).

While in Illinois a new Super Walmart just opened that had great back to school deals, especially compared to NYC prices, so I stocked up and was very glad we were driving home. I got them everything they needed to the entire school year. My daughter got a new Barbie lunchbox that I later saw at a Kmart at home and it was double the price of what I paid in Illinois.

16:14 you can put cottage cheese in the blender and add ranch seasoning. It makes a really yummy dip for chips and veggies and has protein

I bought those pickles on a whim a few months ago and I LOVED them. They're definitely my favorite snacking pickles now.

We are a family of 6. My monthly budget is 900. No extra money to buy bulk meat but I don't take toiletries out of that. No way I could! It's sooo hard. We are a seed oil free, high protein, low processed food family, all produce is organic as is most of our meat. I feel like my cart is nearly empty every week! We do weekly shopping as my husband is paid weekly

Something that I saw recently was a person make a paint palette out of clay. They rolled it out to the desired thickness, trimmed it into the shape (twelve petaled flower, I believe) they desired and then used the back of a rounded teaspoon or tablespoon to make the wells to hold the paint. In the middle, they carved out a flat area that they could use for mixing the paints.
It seemed like such a great idea, I thought your artistic ones would love to do/have that!

I also use aldi. Right now they have 80/20 beef for 3.99 a pound. They have let me buy it by the box. I also use dollar store for some school supplies.
You do an amazing job with your budget and eating healthy.

Once you are in milk and getting enough cream, it is so easy to culture your own sour cream. And it’s better than anything you’ll buy. Nancy’s included. ❤

We spend on average over $2000 CDN on groceries for our family of 4 adults and a younger teen. This is in Canada. Not all organic, but trying to eat whole, healthy food for the most part. We buy half a beef at a time for the freezer.

Sara, for the frozen cream cheese you have to thaw and whip it to get back to the correct texture. In the kitchen aid or food processor

I saw a lady the other day on the Internet that grated butter into her ground beef and made delicious hamburgers! 😍 I was intrigued I’m gonna try it.

I keep going over on my grocery budget as well. My budget before the pandemic was $100 a week ($400 a month) for my family of 5. Now my budget is $170 a week and i still struggle, especially when i try to get better quality foods.

I have my first Azure Standard cart ready to go for on Pay Day! I’m excited. The pick up is 40 minutes away for me but that’s alright. I’m glad you showed the feminine pads. I’m gonna go add them to my cart as well!!

It is a challenge for us to stay in budget for groceries! Family of 5 soon to be 6 with my Mom eating at least once if not more meals per day with us.
Once a month shopping hasn't worked for us up to now but we are trying really hard to stick to once a week shopping. We are spending a bit more on produce by going to a local farm market.
We are on the list with one of the local farmers from our church for any amount of beef that is available either tbis year or next.

There is only 2 of us here at home. Trying to draw the meals out. Amazing what you can do with a little imagination. Plus my husband is happy to eat mince, made in different ways of course, for a few nights a week. I always try to buy good quality beef and make casseroles. We are pensioners now, and can't let our health slip😅
