Kojima scrapped his original ending after his dev team voiced their opinions of it.
I'm mad it didn't go that way. As brutal as an ending that would have been, it would be fitting with one of the series legacy narratives "There are no heroes in war. The only heroes I know are either dead or in prison." -solid snake, metal gear solid.

It's been a good 7 years since Kojima left Konami. The Phantom Pain, burning inside everyone's hearts. It's like he's still here. You feel it too, don't you?
I just started PP today. my first contact with the series and I already feel what you described.. sadness. sadness that theres not much left of it, yes there are alot of other parts but no more. everything coming, if coming wont ever be the same. I already see what a Metal Gear feels like and I know, only a man like him could bring this feeling back.. I cant imagine how big the pain for those has to be, which grew up with the series
I played my first Metal Gear in PSP, it was Peace Walker, back then in 2012 I just wanted to find a great game to play on my old PSP and damn... I found something way better and richer than I expected for that console, it was pure gold!!! Even though I didn't understand deeply the story. Some years later, I played ground zeroes on my Xbox 360, it was great because the game was a direct sequel to PW, so it was really awesome to see the gameplay and graphic phenomenal improvement. Then I played a lot of Phantom Pain, bought it three days after the release, also for my old Xbox 360. Then MGS 1 and 2. Still didn't play the 3rd game but I certainly will
Or that moment when you're getting back to motherbase and the door of the chopper opens and you see dead bodies and scrap metal everywhere And kaz fighting for his life, I was like: "You're not going to die on me dammit!"
There's a reason behind why this song was played in the opening of Ground Zeroes. Skull Face HATED America and this song talks about two Italian immigrant anarchists who were wrongly executed by the US. So in a way..this song resembles Skull Face's thinking. It could even be his favourite song as it seemed like it was playing on a radio in the car rather than just as a background song
also because the history with chico and paz , chico being a revolutionary for the FSNL hating the US for damage that capitalism and US imperialism made in south america and Paz being treated as a double agent and being blamed for something she didn't do , the hate of Skull Face for being with Cipher and the hate of Kaz after the mother base explosion
It's also one of Boss favorites, since Big Boss also become an antifascist after operation Snake eater, being the song that also marks the end of his journey (and Solid's in a way)
I can't find the original comment, so... Thanks to Skull Face, the early concept for FOXDIE was introduced to Cipher. Thanks to Skull Face, microorganisms living in and supporting human bodies (cough cough, nanomachines) was also introduced to Cipher. Thanks to Skull Face, the earliest "mass-production" Metal Gears and nukes began popping up. But even more than that, thanks to Skull Face, Zero was put in a coma. If Zero was not in a coma, perhaps he could have reconciled with Big Boss (Which his tape seem to suggest he wanted to do), turned back the Patriots, and stopped his machine before it got started. The AI never would have taken over, and the War Economy would never appear. The Snakes could have lived normal lives. The world would be left as it is. Every ounce of misery from Ground Zeroes onward is thanks to Skull Face. And nobody knows it. Here's to you, phantom.
Nobody would know that he was the responsable of everything, just like nobody would know that The Boss saved the US and just like nobody would remember who was Venom, because he was just being someone else
Actually Zero was already sick before Skullface's assassination attempt, nowhere is it said what kind of illness it was but exactly that illness put zero to coma and Skullface's assassination attempt was totally failed.
@@sc716756 Not really: Zero was hiding, and Skullface took him out of the equation infecting him with a strain of the vocal chord parasite, not killing him but rendering him useless for almost 40 years.
In the Alternative Ending of MGS4 written by Kojima, Solid Snake and Otacon will be executed for their "crime" and this song will be played, even though they have saved the world twice, but in the eyes of the world they are no more than terrorists. Then main team prevented him because it was considered too sad. And in chronology in the MGS Timeline, this song was first played on MGS V during the fall of Big Boss, and was last played when Big Boss redeem himself.
I think it's easier to listen too it over and over when you understand the context behind it. Like this song is so sad. "We killed and innocent man for a crime another living man did." (It's even better when you hear about the alternate ending in MGS4.)

I'm Japanese and I learned this song from Metal Gear Solid. At the time, I just thought it fit the atmosphere of the game, but when I found out the meaning of the song, I felt sad and angry. When I found out the meaning of the song, I felt sadness and anger, and I was ashamed that I didn't know it before. This is not something that happened in my country, but I think it should be better known to the world. I don't know of any other song that can speak so much to people's hearts in just three lines. And I still listen to this song today. I'll listen to this song again today, to remember that game and that one event.
It’s a really deflating and tragic song. The song’s use, paired with footage of an illegal USA run torture camp meant to evoke Guantanamo Bay, always was a stark and terrifying image. Evokes so many feelings about human history, crime, justice, power, innocence, martyrdom, who rules society. Sad song.

Imagine me, being 15, knowing that most of my friends and most of our generation in general will never know about Hideo's masterpiece. It's like a Phantom Pain (hehe i did the thing *wink* )
Video games are fine. Things change. Learn where to put your support for the industry and things will work out. Big companies with yearly titles will ALWAYS try to go for cash, but extra content/cash shops/etc don't necessarily mean a bad game, company, or business model. Fact is games are getting more and more expensive to make. I know we all miss paying $40-60 for a game and that being all we needed to do, but ultimately what is so wrong with trying to support a developer after their game launches? It's give and take.
The problem is that games nowadays frequently launch with subpar content, and try to add it in with DLC instead of putting out a complete game, with expansion packs that actually create NEW content
it sucks cz i got to start in ground zeroes then i got the phantom pain i started on the last games but i now own all the metal gears even for the msx and nes and im so sad because this has become my favorite series of all time now i still play phantom pain 6 months later :{
To be entirely honest, i'm glad the series ended the way it did. MGS V was the perfect video game. It had amazing game play and a beautiful story line. It is as good as TLOZ OOT in my eyes. I seriously never thought that there would ever be a game to be that good. If there was never another MGS title, I would be A-Okay with that.

With that tune starts the countdown until 'V has come to' - and the birth of the Phantom Big Boss - probably the most powerful incarnation of the multiple 'Snake' characters in MGS timeline. The message of the TPP IMO - all humans born with the ability to achieve greatness and become legends. Tell a man he is worthless - and he will become worthless. Tell a man he is a legend... and he will surpass the legend.

I was being very sarcastic, that game is going to be nothing but the company making money off a disappointed audience. The magic from Kojima is gone, and whatever pathetic rip-off they produce is not worth out money. MGS: TFP was the last Metal Gear.
@@big._.boss0887 It's the model, not voice actor they are talking about.. If you look at the sprite model from Metal Gear 2 (not to be confused with Metal Gear SOLID 2) from 1990 for MSX2, NES, Commodore etc, you'll see, that the face resembles Sean Connery very much, by the choice of Hideo and Konami, because Metal Gear series were inspired by 007 James Bond series, which Sean connery have had a role in. And that's way before voice acting was a thing in gaming, so not in David Hayter's time, yet. Fun fact, the sprite for Big Boss in MG2 is based on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) movie poster, just replaced Sean Connery's eye glasses with eye patch.

The song is a tribute to two anarchists of Italian origin, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, who were sentenced to death by a United States court in the 1920s, and consequently executed.

Sad song.

Sad to see the MGS series go. They were great content rich, story driven video games in a world moving towards freemium, shallow games.
MGS1-4 probably had more of an impact on me than Undertale
The problem is that games nowadays frequently launch with subpar content, and try to add it in with DLC instead of putting out a complete game, with expansion packs that actually create NEW content

XerosXIII Most of these comments seem ignorant of the origins, meaning, and context of this song, as well as clueless about Joan Baez [lyrics] and Ennio Morricone [music]. SO: "Here's to you" is a song sung by Joan Baez, released in 1971 as part of the soundtrack of the film SACCO E VANZETTI. The lyrics are by Baez herself and the music is by Ennio Morricone. The song is a tribute to two anarchists of Italian origin, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, who were sentenced to death by a United States court in the 1920s, and consequently executed. The consensus of critical opinion since then has concluded that the ruling was based on abhorrence to their anarchist political beliefs rather than on any proof that they committed the robbery and murders they were accused of. The case is known as 'the Sacco and Vanzetti Affair.'
Penguin I actually knew where the original song came from, but I can't help that some of these little songs in the comments kind of suit the whole Kojima problem.

Generally fascism requires the removal of freedom for society at large, so that's an odd combo to make, especially when complaining about hippies, people who both specifically fought for personal freedoms and originated in the sixties, well after the age true fascism ended. Big Boss
Ocelot knows...
True
lucky she can swim
Skull face a villan that came and went was literally the cause of almost every problem from here onwards
He could've been way more fleshed out (pun intended) if there was another character perspective to play as in the 9 years bb was in a coma.
The only person that would remember him would be Ocelot but the guy was so crazy for Big Boss he probably forgot everything before Shadow Moses.

Is anyone tearing up to this?
That Metal Gear Solid is gone and that’s it? MGS was my childhood and I damn well know that this is very sad for some of us. Rest In Peace MGS. You will always be my all-time favorite game series.
I keep listening to this and I keep thinking about Paz. What Skull Face did, what they did… she may have been a Spy but none deserve the fate she was gifted. Big Boss truly carried a Huge Burden in his Heart. Here’s to you, Warriors. Specialists. Experts. And Snakes in the Grass.
Her death scene was so sad in GZ. She really didn’t deserve to die like that.

If i remember correctly, this song is about someone receiving the death penalty, only to be found innocent after death.

They are two people. They didn't get a proper trial just because they were Anarchists and Atheists.

I remember when I played Ground Zeroes for the first time, the night it came out. When I completed it and the credits started I was so shocked by the game and the story itself that I spent about 20 minutes just thinking about what just happened... and then, 1 year later came Phantom Pain, oh the hype, the revenge... good times. Thank you Kojima.

Here's to you Nicola and Bart by Joan Baez is the song.
Most of these comments seem ignorant of the origins, meaning, and context of this song, as well as clueless about Joan Baez [lyrics] and Ennio Morricone [music].
Nice Wikipedia summary bro
Who cares if it was a wiki summary they wanted to tell Information and they did I thank them because I learned something
Velvet Crowe Skull Face says something about immigrants wrongly executed or something
Thank you man, I was afraid to not see anything more than "Here's to you Morricone and Snake"
Alright, you want to be the educator to everyone now?
Who would've thought that a mere 45 minute campaign would end up being one of the finest moments in the entire series?
Of course it was still odd how they split it into two games. It's like if you took Metal Gear Solid 3 and split it up into two separate games: 'Metal Gear Solid 3: Virtuous Mission' and 'Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.'
I think it's pretty darn good. Certainly longer than Ground Zeroes. ;D
+Dave B Gameplay wise, it is the best in the series
+Kristian Utomo Tobing I think ground zeroes was better then the Phantom Pain. When you have completed TPP play Ground Zeroes again and see the difference.
yobob2andThefaloppy I played GZ all over again after finishing the phantom pain, and still for me TPP is better because it has a lot of mechanics absent in GZ. Still everyone have their opinion :)
+Kristian Utomo Tobing But story wise, one of the worst.
Unless you count Portable Ops.

Admit it we all miss David Hayter!!!
he isn't gone he just isn't the voice of Big Boss anymore. He would most likely still voice Solid Snake if they ever go on with his story.
I`m I the only one who does not miss him? I have been playing MG since I was a kid and I think his work was great; however, when I played Ground Zeroes I realized his voice was just perfect for Big Boss. I would prefer hearing Kiefer in future games. Take Peace Walker for example, Hayter had to force that raspy voice and it was horrible.
kilroyjenkins1 In an article, I think Kojima said that The Phantom Pain would be the final Metal Gear Game he makes. Last time I checked, he is considering remastering the original Metal gear games with the Fox Engine.
anthony murphy I doubt that he was telling the truth didn't he say the same thing when MGS 4 came out?
kilroyjenkins1 yes he did. he also did it 2001 after sons of liberty. he said also after mgs4 that he will "make MGS games as long as there is someone who want to play it".
