My grandfather served in the Merchant Marine during the war and he told stories of being on a Liberty Ship during a storm. 50 foot waves all around them and Grandpa said you could hear the rivets popping and shooting across the ship like bullets. He was on the A.B. Hammond.

Much respect to my late, great Grandfather! He escaped the misery and certain death of a breaker boy in the bowels of Pennsylvania's coal mines more n'a hundred years ago! He became a merchant marine around the end of WWI

My great grandfather was a fighter for the coal mine and was never knocked out. One day he saw a coal car flip over on one of his friends and he single handedly lifted it up long enough to save his friend The next day he started coughing up blood and they misdiagnosed a burst appendix and he died three days later. I wish I would have gotten to meet him. My mom said that he was an incredible guy. He was Patrick Ryan.

I'm glad he got out. My great-uncle, a breaker boy at age 12, slipped and fell into a chipper that broke up pieces of anthracite into various sizes. The miners retrieved what pieces of him they managed to obtain, dumped them into a burlap sack and dropped it off on my great-grandmother's stoop. She screamed, miscarried the baby she was expecting, and thereby lost two sons in a few hours. It took until my generation (baby boomers) for any of us to get out. Never went back.

My Grandfather was lost at sea off the coast of Brittany, his ship was torpedoed in October 1943, he's buried in Dinard.
Some have died and some are alive. And others sail on the sea.
