Lyrics:
[Chorus]
I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
You've got the brawn, I've got the brains
Let's make lots of...
[Verse 1]
I've had enough of scheming
And messing around with jerks
My car is parked outside
I'm afraid it doesn't work
I'm looking for a partner
Someone who gets things fixed
Ask yourself this question:
Do you want to be rich?
[Chorus]
I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
You've got the brawn, I've got the brains
Let's make lots of money
[Verse 2]
You can tell I'm educated
I studied at the Sorbonne
Doctored in mathematics
I could have been a don
I can program a computer
Choose the perfect time
If you've got the inclination
I have got the crime
[Bridge]
Oh, there's a lot of opportunities
If you know when to take them
You know, there's a lot of opportunities
If there aren't you can make them
Make or break them
[Chorus]
I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
Let's make lots of
[Interlude]
Money
[Verse 3]
You can see I'm single-minded
I know what I could be
How'd you feel about it?
Come and take a walk with me
I'm looking for a partner
Regardless of expense
Think about it seriously
You know it makes sense
[Chorus]
Let's make
(Got the brains, got the looks)
Let's make lots of money
(Money)
(Let's make)
You've got the brawn, I've got the brains
(Ooh)
Let's make lots of money
(Money)
[Chorus]
I've got the brains, you've got the looks
(Got the brains, got the looks)
Let's make lots of money
(Ooh money)
[Outro]
Money

Each synthesiser cost more than most people’s houses back then. Brilliant
Neil Tennant just leaving it in there for future historians to see he could do some playing himself. Great clip.
His timing at 02:30 is a bit off, but he was probably terrified it wasn't going to work at all.
I love the fact that the midi-page of their Fairlight was connected to the screens in the background showing the programming for the song playing along with their live performance. So great to see.
Read somewhere that the Fairlights (there were two) belonged to Blue Weaver and he was round the back mixing as they performed live.
@@onomatopoeia99 i read a comment from Blue Weaver himself and boosted it here somewhere. Seems cool and answered those nerd questions.
@@onomatopoeia99 Yes, his logo is on some of the keyboards (EII+ specifically). Supposedly one of the cables synching the two fairlights got damaged no long before they went on air and there was a frantic rush to fix it.
Impressive kit list with two Fairlight CMI's (probably only beaten by AON's performance on the Tube where they had three!), A Yamaha DX1 and DX7, Technics PX1, and EMU Emulator II+, synching it all was a Friendchip SRC.
@@onomatopoeia99 I remember a while back there were two videos on RUclips of Fairlight sequences from this song - one half of the arrangement from this video and the other hand the other half, which was basically just bass and drums. I have the impression that by 1986 a lot of the early Fairlights were just used as rhythm machines.
NOBODY: I would make an impossible live setup with two (2) Fairlights $30000 (around $100000 EACH adjusted in 2020s money), Yamaha DX1 $14000 ($40000 adjusted), EMU Emulator II $8000 ($22400 adjusted), Yamaha DX7 $2000 ($5600 adjusted), Technics digital piano $2000 ($5600 adjusted). PET SHOP BOYS: hold my beer !
Are u sure it’s live?
And nowadays DX1 is worth approx. of 100 000€ as a collector issue. In 2022 was listed for 150 000 € on Reverb in Mint condition. Otherwise DX 7 MK I is Still avaible for 500-1000 € depending on condition and accesories. At that time DX1 had to be a very luxury affair, the same as these days.
Pet Shop Boys are the best synthpop duo ever. Hope they keep up their work. Pioneers of synthpop
Not "pioneers" as such but Masters, definitely.
Erasure are way better.
@@michaelwilkinson3307 your opinion
I agree with you baron
Plenty of bands did this music before them.
2 Fairlight C.M.I. IIxs, a Emulator II, a DX-1,a Technics PK-1, and a very rare DX-1.All the keyboards except the PK-1 and DX-1 are part of the Arturia-v collection 8
You know your equipment 👍👍👍
Some parts of the song were pre programmed or sequenced using the two Fairlight C.M.I. IIxs. When you see Neil and Chris playing it's them actually playing not miming.
Technically you can import the dx1 presets into dx7 v.
@@jeffcappelletti1986 Very evident by the slight mistake at the end that they are playing in live on top of the sequences - love it
Opportunities has a lot of unique versions, this is one of them
I made a video titled “Hand Drawn Opportunities” if you want to see it.
I like the one on TV that girl singing with the driver is very moving .if they can incorporate the girl in the Duo it would be a very moving song . One of the reason i looked them up. And its a snapy tune.
Underrated.
@@jeanraymond281 Same reason I looked it up. It is an allstate commercial. I hate the hood ornament. is so creepy I turn the channel when that part comes on. LOL
Yamaha DX1 & DX7, e-mu Emulator II... Only Classics!
Not to mention two Fairlights...
@@antikriz aka a few hundred thousand dollara
@@devintariel3769 Indeedara
This is one of the songs that defined the 1980’s... along with Miami Vice... nostalgia and dreams... all in one..
Such a unique sound that built on what had gone before from bands such as depends more and yazoo. So 80s.
I got shocked by seeing Neil Tennant on keyboards back then. Made me understand these guys arrived to stay for an expanded period in the music scene. Simply a jewel.
The machines didn't run themselves. Quite a dangerous proposition actually for live tv. Nothing like it is today. You hit play and hoped your programming was right, and usually it was, but sometimes, things went astray. With only two guys, though, made sense for Tennant to do some duty as well.
I think this is the first time I've seen Neil actually play keyboards!
And Chris without cap😁
@@foto21 The machines were quite un-reliable, Rick Wakeman used to reckon he played a lot of golf when he got a Fairlight whilst waiting for someone to come over from Australia to fix it, the PPG system crashed when SAW were doing "you spin me round" and Martin's PPG 2.2 went wrong during a concert where Karftwerk were in attendance!
The EI/II was no beacon of reliability either and neither were most analogue synths.
The DX7 was reliable though and that's one of the reasons they sold so many of them.
@@dglcomputers1498 I remember programming crappy old drum machines. What a black hole. Many things were better in the past, and a few things were def not. I don't own a DX-7 but I do have a CS-10. It doesn't have unlimited sounds, but what it does have sounds amazing and def different than vsts. THere was a guy out of Japan who was doing great renos on old Yamahas.
This performance has a lot to answer for when it comes to my synthesizer collection!
😎 Cool! "
Wollt ihr unser neues Video auch ein bisschen pushen?! Wäre super!
>> ruclips.net/video/b9ZX9_hlcg0/видео.html
I'm crazy about synthesizer music
The Emu was so cool but so damn bulky lol
haha. Never knew the DX1 was so massive. Now an iOS app :D
@@squishmusic It's rather large, although I am not aware of any iOS app that properly emulates a DX1.
Neil is extrovert and singer. Chris is introvert and keyboarder. I think thats why they cooperating together by so many years. They fully complete each other!
They ARE the song.
there's joke about it. Chris Lowe is the only statue which can play keyboards
Real live electronic music really live this video needs to be put in a music museum it's epic
Want to go back to this times.
Me too, I hate modern life
@@thedude8046 me too!!! I'm 49...OMG 😜
Me too. This was a fun time. Reminds me of my clubbing days. FUN.
Who doesn't? Alas! This is the only way to turn back time, listen to PSB from when we were younger.
I don't know if I want to go back, but I would like to go back to experiencing how I felt back then when this was on the radio, and I was a kid with dreams. Part of my dreams were to be big enough to go to clubs and go dancing to music like this! ha ha!
Why, WHY was this not included in the Pet Shop Boys @ The BBC Special last night.......HUH?!!!
They just used a regular TOTP mime special when they had THIS very rare totally LIVE performance of Opportunities in their archive.
I mean...COME ON!!
My thoughts exactly.
Hahah the thigh tapping, his stage presence never changed.
Neil & Chris you are my life since 1984-2022 👉🏻❤️
👍💜💜
You synthpop geniuses, adore your music a lot!
We do! haha
Гениальный дуэт. Музыка, созданная ими десятилетия назад, не теряет актуальности и сейчас.
What a fabulous version, they should play something similar next time
I'm extremely late to the party and just discovered this band last year (2021), and this was one of the first videos I ever watched, so I thought this was a normal setup for them, like "oh okay this group is 2 dudes on synthesizers and one of them also sings". Going back and rewatching after I've been a fan for about 6 months and forgot about this video, and I'm like 😯 "omg! Neil on a synth!!!" Haha
It’s an ionic moment for electronic music live …
The best version
Hands down.
Yip
The part Chris Lowe plays on the Technics PX1 keyboard is magical.
2 of them r very talented
I know there's time constraints but I wish all the lyrics were here.
Piece of history this -One of the greatest live synth pop songs with fairlights
Oh, hey, this is live! In 1986! What a nice change from having just watched them lip sync on Top of the Pops for 8 videos.
Love the latest commercial for the insurance
Love the hood ornament
This was (and still is) groundbreaking when it was first broadcast. I was lucky enough to see it. Brilliant
See it live or on tv ?
Live on TV at the time. First time they played live on TV
What a banger of a song 🎵
I love hearing those classic synths. Of course, today one keyboard workstation could handle all of that!
The best version of Opportunities!
I saw this performance on TV at the time. They'd already had 2 chart hits and I was curious to see them perform "live". It's amazing that this version is from 29th April as the single was released on 19th May and is so different. I can only assume they wanted to prove they could play live but didn't have the "tools" to do it justice (extra musicians, backing singer etc). This is raw and that's what I like about it. The finished version is way better and one of my favourite PSB tunes ever but the fact Neil is playing keyboards proves they're not just a karaoke outfit (like Erasure)
Both neil and chris playing is absolute heaven.. Neil's sweet voice finishes it off perfectly
His voice is so good live!!
Wish they toured like this.
Love this version and the awesome breakbeat
Ух, как Нил из под бровок глазками стреляет❤
Ну ничего себе! Какое шикарное, драгоценное видео и аранжировка! Почему я его не видел раньше?! Спасибо, PSB!
How I wish they would have a performance like this, perform the classics , just Neil, and Chris. Epic
Didn't they do this the Barfly stuff ?
Thank you Allstate
Don't you mean thank you Pet Shop Boys?
Absolutely Allstate
Good evening earthlings this is the trance master.this is where trance started with synth pop.and this is top level performance
This version is fantastic
Watching this, I'm young again!
This was sequenced using famous session player Blue Weavers Fairlight. He was backstage making sure everything was going smoothly. The Page R on the monitors is actually a live feed from the Fairlight.
That's right.
I thought it might be something like that. I recognised the graphics and wondered how they managed to link it all up.
I've only ever seen Fairlight pages on the Fairlight monitor with the lightpen.
AWESOME SONG 👌👌👌👌👌 AWESOME PET SHOP BOYSSSSSSS 👌👍👍💪💪👍👌👍
Chris's main pad line on the DX1 sounds like a layered brass patch utilizing all 12 operators!!! Geek alert
It's amazing how the technology has moved on so fast. Almost half million usd expended that time in 1986 putting on stage synthesizers, sequencers, keyboards, computers, programming software, speakers, microphones, hiring a sonidist. Now, 2020, Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant recorded another version of "West End Girls" absolutely in lockdown, isolated one each other and only using a Mac, mixing software and midi keyboards (¿2 thousand dollars?). Even is teorically possible replicate many of those sounds with an ipad (2 hundred dollars?). Obviously that voice is unique, also that classic Yamaha and Emulator II, but I'm only speaking about the tech evolution in music.
Those early samplers has a unique sound, though, that is difficult to replicate in software - maybe because the Lo-fidelity gave a grittiness to the sound, plus limitations lead to creativity. Yes you could do it on a modern DAW but it would sound much blander!
that's true, you can replace most of vintage synths with computer, software sequencer and array of soft synths for much less cost
@@craigbroadfoot1851 I used to think so, too and i'm still a fan of hardware synths, especially Analog ones BUT HONESTLY, Sw teehnology developed so much that we can currently reply that sound with plugins : sad, but true ... And considering the money we can save, and also the room (not everyone has a real studio), well, i'm seriously starting to think that i'll leave all my HW gears ... It's sad, i repeat BUT facts are facts !
@@MagDiSante What you’ve stated is an opinion rather than a fact. I’m no purist but in my opinion a hardware Moog will always have the edge over a digital recreation, and those early samplers had a unique sound with low fidelity converters and analog filters. This is why I love the sound of those early Pet Shop Boys albums. Of course soft synths are more convenient and practical in many ways, and are close enough for most people. In the same way, a real Hammond organ or Fender Rhodes has the edge sonically over a software recreation but I’d always use a digital keyboard for gigs!
@@craigbroadfoot1851 Every statement could be defined "just an opinion" from a certain point of view BUT impressions and TESTS are also "FACTS" ! I'm not an "ENDORSER" , just to be clear but i recently purchased a well-known suite of SW recreations of classic synths and samplers and i can say, for example, that virtual DX-7 sounds even BETTER than the original HW synth (that i owned in the 80s) ... I still have many analog synths but honestly most of current SW products can replace all of them ... As far as i know, some tests have been done by sw engineers, making people listen to different sounds produced by analog synths and their sw versions : Almost always, people have not been able to tell any difference !!! And have You ever tried (without any prejudice) the virtual Emulator II (just another example) ? Of course, the fascination of HW instruments can't be reached BUT speaking of results and of sound in itself, well today we can say that they can be replaced by SW, i repeat ... It wasn't true until a few years ago but now software development has objectively made great strides! Once more, i keep loving HW synths and especially analog ones But you also need to be objective.
Me encanta ésta versión, el plus de que Neil está en los teclados y vestido un poco más informal. Los quiero demasiado. Desde Asunción Paraguay ❤️🇵🇾
I absolutely ❤ their
hair do it suits them absolutely fantasticly they look so cute❤
Fantastic! And catnip for synth fanatics!
DX1 ....so damn rare
I keep coming back to this. Stunning

Extraordinaria version..
Real TechO music. Love the 80s
Electronica
Absolute genius and classic
This clip. Saw it on a 'best of the 80s' BBC thing in 1989 and 'got it'. Now have my very own 80s synthpop tribute band. Not quite DX1/DX7/EMU/CMIs, but we do a few PSB classics. Thanks Neil and Chris. :)
There is someone on RUclips who bought all of the synths that were used on stage and covered Opportunities (Lets Make Lots Of Money).
Damn, not one but TWO Fairlights. There we see a few houses' worth of equipment.
One of the Fairlights was owned by Blue Weaver. Blue Weaver was the touring keyboardist for the Bee Gee's. There is a video of Blue Weaver's Fairlight parts used for this performance.I don't have the link to the video. Probably can do a RUclips search for it
anyway, also the Emulator II was crazy expensive. Looks like they aready had "lots of money" ;)
Another reason i don't want to die,god speed the P.S.B,LOVE YOU ALL STAY SAFE ALL MY FELLOW PEOPLE LOVE YOU ALL.......PEACE
Lets make lots of money with such songs 🥺❤
Este video es una joya!!!!
Stunning
Awesome! I just love the old videos.
Как давно это было,а слушать все также приятно...
я согласен

Perfect sound!!, I love PSB
The DX1 was huge! Chris' piano lines are beautiful in between.
The Boys rock.I remember watching this and got hooked on their brilliant music
PLEASE come back my childhodd days.!!. i have goosebumbs on my arrms right now. !!! love from Denmark /michael
Me encantó esta versión. PSB por siempre
Epic!
Great musicians, brilliant performance
I watched this when it was live on the telly. It was stunning then and still is now
Loving this classic again (as a former child of the 80s)
Bons tempos
banging tune - great performance 1.58 iconic !
this is a dope ass video!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
That DX1.... damn!
Espectacular quisiera haber vivido en esa epoca
I love Pet Shop Boys from Brasil ❤️
Te amo demasiado Neil Tennant.
And Chris lowe
OUTSTANDING!! Love this song, which I paid more attention in the 80's
Starts with an old Fuzzbox, ends with a young Vernon Kay ❤❤
My favorite Pet Stop Boys song....... greetings of Perú.....
I remember watching that at the time. Definitely a statement performance by them, to show they were serious musicians and artists. It still looks odd seeing Neil hunched over the keyboard like that though as he sang!
Feel in love with this song when I was kid still go back to this it takes you back to great times
So simple nevertheless so genius...I've been a fan since 1993
This song is one of my all time favorites.
This band is awfully terrific and awesome.
Best duo ever
The best EVER ❤EM TOO BITS..BLESS U CHRIS AND NEIL YOUR FANTASTIC
Tears for Fears and Eurythmics would like a word.
WOW!!! I like this song!!!
I love everything about this, the synths and the fairlight screen on the video wall!
Great! Saw this on TV at the time aged 12 and it’s what got me into PSB and synths in general. Couldn’t afford any of these (and definitely not a CMI), so my first “synth” was a relatively affordable Roland A50 after seeing one being played on tour in 89. Turns out it was a midi controller.. with dodgy poly aftertouch. I still have it.
I feel so sorry for the younger generations, we definitely had the best music back in the 80s.
Don't worry, all of the 80s music is on youtube for us to enjoy.
Us younger generations are here with full access to decades of music! We are lucky.
In a different timeline, the original single was globally popular and they actually toured doing it like this. That would have been so cool!
Love these guys (from the age of 6) fabulous version!
Two Fairlight in synchro for sequence, 1 Yamaha DX7, 1 Yamaha DX1 (the beast), 1 Emulator II, 1 Piano Technics DV1 and a lot of outboard...
Love the 80's
Depending on how loaded the fairlights were, easily 600 thousand USD worth of equipment here, and that's 1980s' dollars.
Lovely version, thank you Boys ♥️🙌🏻
