An essential element of guitar soloing, one that to me separates the grownups from the kids, is the player's ability to interpret single-note melodies in a musical way, with emotion and expression.
There are countless ways in which one could play a note or series of notes on the guitar, and if you do not focus on being in control of how each note sounds, you're wasting an opportunity for expression, via articulation, which is the one of the most important tools that is available to you as a soloist.
The little details in the manner by which you choose to play each note in a melody is what will give you the opportunity to sound different than any other guitar player and develop a unique sound and musical "voice."
Using articulation as an expressive element is the one thing I concentrate on the most when playing live or recording, simply because there are so many options. The way in which you ultimately interpret a melody is the way you reveal your musical personality, which, to me, is the whole point in making music in the first place!
I love how all of Marty's lessons center around thinking for yourself. He practically orders you to do your own thing musically ASAP.
***** Exactly! I sat down with a book earlier and I was practicing some random page and it was patterns that have been exhausted in everything that I pretty much already use in improvising solos and then I had Marty's whole outlook wander through my head which made me stop reading from a book and put on a song I'd heard but never tried to play before and just work through it by ear just focusing on all the little details.
+VoyagerAbove totally agree... and that's how I feel. The audience's ears are the canvas... your instrument is the brush, your tone is the paint..... How you make your art is who you are! Music is so subjective as in art... one man's trash is another man's Michal Angelo..
+Paul Calugaru Michael angelo, trash? ouch! haha jk, totally agree with this statement! Dont be scared to experiment!
Which is what every teacher and book does. They urge you to develop your own style by teaching you the basics that you need to develop your own style. Just because you're to inept to pay attention to formal teachings doesn't mean that it is any different from informal teachings.
"Kinda gay" and "you can always play them wrong" killed me
"Or you can play it wrong, you can always do that" hahahah man Marty is a funny dude
Finally... A master talking about doing music and not only playing scales as fast as possible! Thank you Marty!!
my style is more the one of "playing wrong", i always use it
Marty giving tough love 😂 I love how he’s so brutal, yet polite.
"...itd kinda gay if you ask me...." hilarious, I'm really not that into his music but I've learned a lot from those lessons and btw a had so much FUN ! Thanks Marty and Guitar World !
I love the way Marty teaches, and his one liners on what NOT to do is pretty funny and serious all at the same time. I also too like the fact that he states for you to decide and make it your own. I was always a fan of his music, but I never knew he was a good teacher too! Very cool series and so straight forward, no BS or taking years to talk and then playing only a little bit. I like his process.
5:53 Dudes Named John Smith are totally stoked.
"kinda gay slide" = Steve Vai lol
+FeelingShred lol
+FeelingShred Come on man! :) Hasn't Steve earned the right to slide any way he wants too:) :)
Marty was just saying that it was gay in an intro. But, yeah, I think they mostly sound gay overall.
technically he could be as good as Steve but composition wise he doesn't come near his level(if you don"t believe me , just watch for the love of god)
mayank trakru They're equal imo. Marty has a lot of good stuff too. Dragon Mistress and Undertow
I like how he uses his first name as an adjective.
Josh talks like that all the time, But Josh's Friends Find it cute you know? Josh can talk properly, but it just grew on him
Great guitar player, great teacher, great man.
I love how weird, awkward, strange, off the wall, batty, odd, and left field all of Marty's playing, suggestions, etc. are. That's not a bad thing; I think it sounds really emotive, and very unique. You listen to 100 guitarists, and you're lucky if there is 5 different categories all hundred of them fit into. Marty doesn't fit into any of those, and that's why his mental approach is a large influence to me, even though I sound nothing like him. George Lynch, Eddie Van Halen, and Ace Frehley are also big influences, but the best thing of all is I sound like none of them.
oh my god i love martys personality so much.
“kinda gay at the beginning of you ask me” absolutely fucking took me out 😂😂😂
Melodic Control #2
I stopped trying to learn martys songs note for note precisely because of this. a prebend here, a slide there, a half bend there. marty would style up any note in a way that you have a hard time predicting how he will style any note. Now I just play them my way and hope it sounds good.
I think that's exactly the point he's trying to make here.
And if it sounds good to you, it IS good, all the rest is someone else's opinion...

You are playing at intermediate, to play on expert mode you need to get all the phrases correct.
@@JoeyRec Unless you're in a cover band, it's literally pointless. The whole reason to learn other people's music is to "steal" a little for your own stuff, to develop technique/ear training, or just for fun.
"or you can play it wrong. You can always do that."
haha!
'kinda gay' i loled so hard thank u
That PRS.. So incredible
A lot of first finger bends as always. Great lessons i love following them all. Thanks
2:02 is just iconic
Finally he says it! This is really the "thing" about Marty... how he pays attention to every note
2:46 "or you can play it wrong, you can always do that."
Well shit, I've been doing that my whole guitar playing life. Who knew I was a guitar virtuoso. Go figure.
Honestly, i've been looking for a video like this for a while.
2:02 Ah, I guess I'm gay. Personally I think those slides can sound good in songs as long as it's not excessive.
I think his point was that it's too much emoting/trying too hard for the intro. Added expressiveness is something you should build up, not start with right out of the gate.
I hate the youtube comments section. And the worst thing, is that I always have to look... damn!
This dude is a guitar guru to be honest. He always says something funny but like real. Like "fuck it, know what I'm saying." Or "thats gay if you put that in the intro if you ask me." Who's listening to this intro song he was playing to now? Really pretty melody and if i had someone's guitar skittles it'd be Marty
Best lesson on RUclips!
Every sugestion that says Marty Friedman i go watch
His commentary is great
Brilliant Artist, Awesome Teacher
Marty is genius.
Probably the smartest guitar player out there.
“Which is alright, but it’s kinda ghey at the beginning of the song if you ask me.”
LMAO
Marty really likes his choices lol!
i fuckin love this guy
Martys really come a long way from the monotone world.
@2:10 I was dying hahahaha
the most amazing song i had tried unplugged in a differnet way,was Hangar 18..... :D
Love this dude
I like how he encourages people to not be carbon copy guitar players.. his choice of wording cracks me up too lol
LMAO Either he's jet lagged or fucking toasted.
world...very good...nice marty....
You said it man... It is your fucking decision
How did he know my name's John Smith? he called me out ha
Been 7 years. Feeling the pressure yet, John Smith?
if anybody cares, when Marty said gay, he meant "unimpressive". A word may have many definitions, so it depends on context.
I don't think anyone thought he meant that it was a homosexual way to play the note :P
And if anyone got offended/took it the wrong way it just means their iq is sub 80 points. Anyone with atleast half a brain would have understand that. But i get your point in nowadays fucked up ultra sensitive society.
Nice!
If you're a Vai fan you'd probably get butthurt with this video LOL
Because Vai does those backward slides, an example would be the one in the song I Would Love To.
@@stephenonguitars In one of the variations Marty was showing, he did it too even after he kinda bashed it. It's valid, just used a lot. In the proper context it could be the best way of phrasing it.
I mean Vai's style is not exactly.. straight.
Can someone explain me why? xD
@@Shun101010 when did he bash it?
He said "kinda gay". Gay means overly happy. And those slides sound "too much" for an intro(to Marty atleast).
Many misinterpreted him using gay as an insult, when he was just saying that its a different style/way to play it.
"it's kinda gay'
- Marty Friedman
Somebody named John Smith, just gasped
It will become personalized if you feel what you play...better to create then to copy.
I got the first minute and a half of this song down along with intoxicated. His random bends make it hard af to learn by ear even with a tab its still difficult.
+dan mcamis thats why he says make it your own. It's not just about the notes. Its about how you get to them. So learn the notes and get to them in your own way. thats part of the fun of soloing!
Marty is suck a good player and musician and teacher!!
John Smith, I am so jelly. He was totally flirting with you!
Yeah, I already know that.
When you're playing a guitar, you can hit the same note anywhere as long as you don't fuck up your melody.
"So I'm gonna take it one at a time, first one is-" *plays two notes*
whats the signal song ?
Marty Friedman is such a badass... he's an asshole and I love it!!
2.43 when wrong sounds righter and opens up new doorways..
"This is what separates the men from the boys, or the women from the ladies." Wha?? LOL! It's okay Marty, we know what you mean.
Do a kirk hammett video
+thefinalguitar2 play the same 5 notes exactly the same every song for 30 years with a lot of wah. Lesson complete.
😂 fuckin love Marty
Woah....
Is almost like watching a Bob Ross video
kinda gay hhahahaha hes so honest seriously i never heard of him before but i love him.hes cool as fuck! the world needs this sort of normality.
+terrion devine never heard of him? I r sad panda now. er pony. In all seriousness, please listen to his stuff. What do you usually listen to if i may ask.
uh....i listen to me? Master Lightning soundcloud
Marty 4 president
a great lesson I like how your words like wrong or gay its almost politically incorrect its funny I love you talk like in Michigan midwest accent,,,, your better than 99 percent or more guitar players
2:45 ah yes thats my style
I think joe satrianis take on createing melody was more on the ball
what's the nbame of that guitar? and what signature??
It's a PRS SC 245, Paul Reed Smith (signature), also very recognizable by the birds as fretboard inlays
John E. Smit ty :D
re gay comment; I perked up when he said that, like, yaaa! , he`s not PC. Thank you
I knew what he meant and never thought he meant it in a homosexual way, or if he did
it wasn't meant to disparage anyone I`m sure. its just a term to say, its `goofy, or odd.
anyway, I just dig the cut of his jib. short and to the point lesson without all this crap like talking through it a lot and trying to hold the hands of the total beginner as it were.
rock on marty and thanks for all you do to help others be better players
"for all you girls out there"
- Marty Friedman
Here I thought he was talking to me. Turns out, this is for John Smith. Darn.
Nooh! He was talkin' to me!
Oh shoots, may be not, 'cause my last name is without the 'h' at the end, pronounced with a hard 't' like in 'shit', but then with an 'm' off course... ;-)
Sounds like Lydian
Three words: Impossible to copy.
There, I said it.
okay, who is john smith? :p
he kinda speaks in the 3rd person a bit too much
Top 10 people that literally don't age
"or you can play wrong"
Marty was probably pretty tipsy when he made these and it's hilarious
I might be the only one who heard him say it sounded gay, and interpreted it as him meaning overly happy.
People aren't that deep I guess
"Women from the ladies" wait a minute..🤔
Is that a Witcher necklace? Makes sense...
I can play wrong.I always do that...🤣 😃 😄 😎
Marty give none of the shits
He plays like a God but this picking hand looks so weird imo :D
Did Marty even age? I met him maybe last month, he look the same!!!
Marty lives in Japan for over 20 years so political correctness does not apply lol.
japan isn't exactly known for it's testosterone. From what I've seen, a lot of the young dudes there dress androgynously. Be it too much soy or just fashion, most japanese males look kind of effeminate to me. Marty, himself, is very short and skinny...doesn't look like much of a man, either. He's undoubtedly an incredible guitar player, but using "gay" in that context isn't cool...anywhere.
FPC
What a poon
@@taradead maybe he used "gay" in the meaning of "cheerful" or "happy"
in france we have 2 meaning for the sound of the word "gai"/"gay" one is "happy" when the other is "homosexual"
I thought it was the same in english :)
@@taradead triggeredddddd poor chap
im not gey, but I LOVE MARTY!!
The 28 dumps down are gays. lol
Fellas is it gay to use overcomplicated phrases on the beggining of the melody?
This melody sounds same no matter how you play because the chords and tempo are same, I would change the chords minor or major steel the melody to create something backwards really detailed mind blowing , Marty sounds trendy, dragons kiss isn't near as good album as perpetual burn was 'air' Id rather wear a suit you see
Anyone else sense that he's maybe a little drunk in this one? He's acting much different that he usually does and it's funny.
I aM NoT GaYYYYY
I don't get it. Marty's song is called devil take tomorrow and yet it's a happy song. And normally a devil is an evil creature that feeds off the fears and sorrows of other people.
Dont over anaylize
Mike Rousseau I'm just saying.
Aye. Those are the styles of songs Marty plays. I mostly listen to and play rotting christ songs.
It is Guitar World's job to edit out offensive comments
Cry about it
Not played in the key of G.
This PRS is beautiful to look at but sounds awful. Where is the sound from Cacophony or Megadeth Marty?
+Matjaž Pincelič im sure it sounds great in a mix. You have to remember, what you hear on the album is way different than a guitar track alone.
