Lessons learned from some bad encounters, one of which happened in my town during a visit by VP Cheney. Lots of driveways along the road. The local law enforcement didn't staff to cover them adequately. One oblivious driver failed to comprehend why a main road would be completely empty in the middle off the day. This even with an easily visible cop car car blocking the signaled intersections to the East and the West. He decided it was a good time to turn right onto the road and head East. That got three local LE cars on him really quick but they had to do a maximum acceleration run to get to him before he got to the signaled intersection to East.
I believe that this type of unprotected intersection problem actually resulted in an innocent driver, with a green light, crashing into a Presidential or Vice-Presidential car many years ago. Sometime between Nixon and Obama. The "Beast" was banged up pretty good. No one got a good photo because the USSS stood in front of the damaged areas. I am fairly certain it was in the District of Columbia. Some local DC motorcycle cops had screwed up with their assignments to block intersections.
Apparently back then on certain late night runs the motorcade only ran lights without continuous sirens, thus the driver enters an intersection on green and tangles with a silent motorcade moving much faster than the posted speed limit. Then he and his passengers ended up with all sorts of submachineguns aimed at them as they got dragged out of the wreckage and arrested. Eventually the USSS realized what really was the reason for them entering the intersection and let them go.
So how can 30 cops on bikes a mile ahead of the president actually protect him?? I am glad I live in Australia where the Prime Minister can freely move around in his own country with minimal security as there is no threat to his life. The way Trump carries on there is a real threat to his life as he seems hell bent on making enemies with everyone. Where I live we think he is a joke, he has turned the respected office of President into a reality TV show
