Thank you. We were so lucky that Kenny visited the shop as often as he did. He really helped a LOT of drummers become much better players. He'll always be a mega-badass in my book.
Saw him live in a clinic in Edmonton. Never seen a guy hit so hard, amazing (DeVito comes close) . The drums used in the clinic were from Long and MacQuade, and the head from the snare was displayed afterwards in the store and said "I survived Kenny Aronoff" and he signed it. Soft spoken, great player--can play anything; played jazz, then played Alice in Chains.
Just saw him with Satriani, was shocked when he walked onto the stage! Yes, he hits so hard I expected him to bust a head or shatter a cymbal! Extra bonus that show was!
These video's are great Donn. I love Kenny and he such a cool dude that has been there and done that! I recently purchased a few of those Jamo Jamieson snares from you and they are absolutely killer. Do more videos!!
Like a kid in a candy store,I have my old ludwig,s holly wood kit in champagne sparkle ,they went on many tours in my day,1970,s,I have them polished and in cases,I'll take them out on special ocassion,s
Mike, Thanx for contacting me. I'm glad you caught that. I decided to just clean up Jerry's set and not restore it. The original paint job was too far gone to restore. It actually looks really cool (however tragic) in it's current condition. I should have the next installment of the Kenny Aronoff video posted today. Cheers! Donn
I'm sooo curious to know how much there's a difference between artstar 2/custom vs starclassic thin shells. Any of you here that have own both and could do an honest comparison? Tnx!
You can come close by simply checking out peoples youtube vids jamming on their artstar II's and artstar custom kit. There are a handful out vids out there. Then compare that to what you hear with someone playing starclassic kits. The Artstars simply are just more massive sounding. They are like cannons, thick, full body.I have a last year mid 1980's Tama Superstar thick birch shell kit as well as a early 90's/late 80's tama Rockstar kit. They are very loud and ultra powerful. You can hear the difference in the music world in respect to recordings.Starting in the late 90's as drummers moved away from heavy drum shells.Opting for thinner drums like Tama starclassics became the standard norm. So did the thinner drum sound that correlated or followed possibly due to that transition to less beefy drum companies shifted into making.
I love your videos. I found a drum for sale that I feel you would be able to answer some questions about. It might be rare but it might also be nothing too significant. Is there a way to contact you? Thanks man!
I've got a set of Artstar IIs and Granstar IIs. Best drums ever made! Love the long lugs. And they sound HUGE!
I was blessed to take a lesson with Kenny when Donn had his shop in Bellevue. Peace to both Donn and Kenny!
Thank you. We were so lucky that Kenny visited the shop as often as he did. He really helped a LOT of drummers become much better players. He'll always be a mega-badass in my book.

Some millionaire with a passion for drums must give you the money to make a museum. This is insane...! :O
Jerry Shirley's kit!.....are you gonna restore it, Donn?

Aronoff equals Xenomorph head!
