    I originally got the DTAC tourist sim at the airport for 90 days, and renewable for 90 days two more times (total 9 months). Ended up being about 250thb/mo paid 3months at a time. When that expired, I just used the DTAC APP to go to Packages - My Choice, where you can customize what you want. You can choose how long you want 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, or 90days. Then choose how much data you want at max speed each month. Then choose if you want any minutes for phone calls. I get 90 day plan, with unlimited internet but 20GB at maximum speed, and 30 minutes of calls each month for 608thb/90days (203thb/mo). It seems like a good deal to me. But really, almost anywhere I go, there is wifi available. So having the plan is more of a security blanket.

      The currency exchange at airports around the world is known to be poor. If possible, exchange only a minimum there to get you through your 1st day. Then go to SuperRich, which is a popular exchange with locations around the city. They even have an APP to check the rates and list the locations.
      Also, before leaving home, you could open a WISE account. Then you can transfer some cash from your Bank to the WISE account, and exchange to Thai Baht inside the account (great rates). You can use the WISE card almost anywhere/everywhere that takes Visa. You'll still need cash for street food, nightmarkets, and small local vendors, taxi/tuktuks, etc. But the WISE card is quite handy.

    i think the alternate advice is to avoid tourist sims at 7 eleven and also checkout family mart offerings. also phone providers in a market or on the street can have packages for 199 baht for 14 or 30 days, iirc.

    • @ProjectBangkok
      @ProjectBangkok  Год назад +2

      The odds of finding a family mart vs 7/11 is just bad.. walk any direction and you will run into a 7.. same can’t be said for the latter.. and you can’t google where the nearest one is or how to get there.. because you don’t have a sim 😂

    • @GandalfPassing
      @GandalfPassing Год назад

      @@ProjectBangkok fair point. :D 7/11 is good when they have good sims in stock. to clarify, when i said "tourist sim", they sometimes stock sims that actually say they are a tourist sim and they are way more expensive than regular sim cards sold there.

    Last year I was in Thailand and I believe the AIS website mentioned that they might offer service through eSIM activation. Would it be possible to get service with an eSIM activation now? I'm not sure if eSIM has become more widely available since Apple made a big push for eSIMs in America last year with the iPhone 14.
    For Americans traveling to Thailand, I recommend getting an eSIM activation for a few days as a bridge. This way, when you land at the Thailand Airport, you will have immediate service. You can then use the internet to call a Grab Taxi and have a few days to go to a mall and get a SIM card for longer-term service.

      @@ProjectBangkok The cheapest package is 199 Baht/month you can use maximum speed for 20GB and you can use unlimited data at 20Mbps but it does not include a free call. Finnmobile is an online internet provider which you can only buy sim card from website but it is apparently cheaper compared with 3 main internet brands.
