Haha! Funny seeing you here also. I’m usually watching on your Toyota maintenance channels but I’ve always had Mercedes’ diesels, which is what I’m familiar with. Glad to see you appreciate the true highway legends!
I have a W140. It's full of character and brings much joy from its nostalgia. It is a tank. But it is temperamental and costly to repair. Many have been neglected because of cost. Best to spend a bit more and find an excellent one. That's my view. Good luck.
Please get it! You do such a great job with your other videos that have been very helpful. I would expect good things with this new vehicle plus, I have not seen much about this engine.
I owned a 1992 2.5L TD 300D for several years but it suddenly started consuming oil at an alarming rate after a long roadtrip so I decided to trade it in for a 2005 3.2L TD E320 CDI that I bought for $5900. The acceleration of direct injection vs. IDI is night & day & the CDI's fuel mileage actually is better as well. I would strongly urge & recommend test driving an 05 or 06 E320 CDI as the price for them is comparable to what you are intending to spend I believe. 2006 was the last year of the OM648 inline 6 iron block engine & the only emission devices to worry about are EGR & port inlet shut off valves in intake manifold. These cars are of course heavily dependent on computer control units so I bought a Chinese clone DAS/Xentry system off Alibabba for $300 & with that I am able to avoid dealer & still do all my own maintenance. JMHO! Nice looking TD S350!
I am so excited that your intending to buy this S350! Why? Because of the 603.971 engine, that's why. You are one of the few if any, people that do videos on the 603 engine. I like the work and info on the '87 300D that you had and I have a '87 300TD wagon with the 603.960 and the layout of these two engines under the hood (the 603.971 & 603.960) are almost identical, if you can tell me the major difference...and hey if you purchase this automobile let's work on those bucket tappets together!!! Cheers and good luck with your decision, thanks for the videos!
The only things I'd do to it would be a restoration on the inside, probably paint it black or dark grey and add original 18" AMG rims. You got yourself a car for many years to come!
I would say definitely if you can get if for around $2500. The engine may be new but it is technically still a 24 year old car. Maybe $3000 if its absolutely perfect..
rod bender? headgasket blowing? never heard any of these as being "common" or well known from my research on the OM603... i've always thought they were all fairly strong if it was an older diesel Benz
Diesel Mercedes I had a question for you guys, I am thinking of purchasing one of these from an older gentlemen that owned it from purchase, he has service paper work of $30k, it has 265k miles on it he did an engine rebuild around 170k that was 90k miles ago, also the transmission was rebuilt. He wants $4k I’m thinking of giving him an offer of $2500. I know these engines have the famous engine rode benders and eat oil. Should I get a shop inspection before purchase?

Are the MB replacement long blocks redone with 606 rods and EGR redirected or disconnected ? I would take the gamble and purchase You could always sell that 603 and replace it with a 606 and create a European version 140 diesel. Regardless, good luck friend!!
Don't buy it for your self !! Spend it to me ...(;-) I'm so sorry about my bad english, so i must ask you here. Did the car become a new enginge or got it a repair kit. If its a repair kit what must i ask for by the mercedes dealers. Is there an ordernumber like Axxx Greethings from germany, the homeland of all Mercedes S class. So buy it ! Make more from your great Mercedes Diesel video's. We lke it !
Great riding cars. Stay away. The engines are garbage. They bend rods 1 and 6. I had one. When the AC evaporator goes you are looking at a 50 hour $3500 repair.
I did not know they put the 722.6 in the W140. Are you sure about this? I thought they were only introduced post 1996? Also, $3,000 is reasonable for this car. I wouldn't be scared of the engine - should it break, you can sell pieces of it and recoup the cost of a junkyard OM606 which will fit in without any modifications. Speaking of which, when (when, not if, when) it breaks, message me and I will buy the whole damn thing. If it makes you feel any better, I bought a shit condition E300 turbo for $4000 with a shit paint job, a bunch of engine lights on, smoke on startup, and wear on the interior, but it only has 98,000 miles on it. I would do any kind of head gasket tests you can. Mercedes replaced shit engines with shit engines. I do believe it would run for a long time before it catastrophically failed, but it WILL catastrophically fail, so if it is already in the phase of burning through the head gasket you could negotiate the price down big time. The head gasket is the first thing to go on these things so it will be an annoying pain in the ass for awhile if that already has holes. Some of these things will run for a couple hundred thousand miles before failing!
Thank you…I have that pocket size MB publication, USA Model Designation, it says: Model W140.134 , Sales Designation S 350 Turbo , Engine 603.971, A/T 722.6 , Model Indicator A5…But it might be a typo…..
Your repair videos are made with great quality, and I'd love to see a series of repair videos for this model. I vote 100% that you buy it.
Thank you...

350 is not a good diesel. If you want to W140 with a diesel, look for a 300TD version, OM606.
