The real reason my CDI Turbo Diesel Mercedes was and still is the cheapest in the country is because of a horrible engine problem. If left untreated this issue could cause catastrophic damage to my engine and render my car worthless. Don't buy a diesel car or truck without watching this video and inspecting for Black Death!!

This happened to my 2003 sprinter van. The Mercedes dealer told me the problem was caused by bad injectors and I would have to replace all of them. Luckily I knew they were lying . Something else, if you don't have "black death" keep the injector lubed. Excellent video! Many years ago (1984), I bought a 1965 MB 190D (Heckflosse--Fintail, or Swallowtail) for $600 that had been sitting in a carport behind an old house for years. After towing it home, I was cleaning it when I pulled a threaded rod protruding from the instrument panel (I had put a battery into it to check out the lights and such) and it fired up! I knew nothing about diesels! But I bought a Clymer manual and started doing repairs and maintenance on it. I was actually able to order parts for it from our local Pontiac/Mercedes-Benz dealer (!) A year later, I sold it for $1500 to a guy who just had to have it! I regret selling it to this day, but that money was most of the down payment on our first house... so it was for a good cause! Keep on wrenching, and Merry Christmas!

I would like to give you a little tip when using a slide hammer to pull a stubborn part. It really helps to have some tension on the shaft of the slide hammer to reduce the bounce effect. The movement seen during your use of the tool shows that you are loosing force that is wasted instead of actually been transferred to the injector. We have modified ours with a ring on the top so we can apply the upward force with a hoist to preload the tool. This reduces the bounce effect and allows for all of the force to actually be applied to the injector from the slide hammer. The hoist does not have to be elaborate or expensive a small block and tackle works well because if you pull on it to tension the ropes the weight of the car will act as a preload. .

I've done this job too with the proper tools and chemicals. I bought a bore cleaning kit that had a plug that kept solvent in the bore hole, yes, it was on amazon. Biggest question for you is why not apply some torque or twist to the slide hammer head tool? I was able to twist the injector out with very little hammering? It was about as bad as this 642 in the video. Also acetone is highly effective in melting the carbonized material. I bought a vacuum brake bleed tool modified it slightly and used it to suck up the sprayed acetone and carb cleaner while scrubbing and removing the contamination. Nice job!

I had a similar problem on a 4 cyl Merc diesel engine fitted to a PT Cruiser (we got diesel Cruisers in Europe!) Chuffing noise and lots of black death. I was running on home made bio diesel and it melted the black death away over the course of a few weeks, making the leak much worse but making it easier to remove the injector. The nose of the injector had been grooved by the continuous blow by and had to be replaced. The genuine mercedes copper sealing rings are very thin and prone to leak over time so I used Honda Accord diesel seals, same size but a bit thicker and easier to seal. Sold the car years ago and it's still going strong with the new owner!

Absolutely the best video covering this problem on RUclips. I did this job on my E220 CDI and it took me weeks to research and put together all the info that you presented in this video. Wish you had made it before then! I used a slide hammer that involved taking the cap off the injector and screwing the hammer attachment down inside the threads of the injector itself. Scary stuff but it worked a treat, each injector came out in under 2 minutes. The car runs great 20,000 miles later with no black death. It does smoke white sometimes from cold, is this a sign of damaged or worn injectors? Should i look into replacing them or having them rebuilt? The smoke doesnt bother me but i would change them if nit doing so could be bad for the engine long term or cost me fuel or power. Thanks, Joe in Ireland

    • @MrShadownoise

White smoke is unburned diesel. Lots of reasons why this might happen, but if only when cold, suspect glow-plugs.

@@joecrancher2008 They are MUCH cheaper than injectors :-) and easy to test by removing them and putting across a car battery - body on negative, wire from positive to the terminal on top. The tip should glow cherry red within 2secs. If they don't, replace. If they are OK, investigate the glow-plug relay, make sure it's supplying 12v when the ignition is first turned on.
Service life of a glow plug is supposed to be only 3-4 years, but it's common to find they have never been changed. If yours are very old, be very careful undoing them. They can seize in the head and a snapped-off plug body is a problem you really don't want. A 24hr soaking of PlusGas, warm engine, and a deep socket is best. Shop around for the best price. I got a complete set of 4 new Bosch for 28GBP (for an Alfa diesel), some outlets charge 4x-6x that.

I'm a mechanic and did 14 years in a euro shop.. We had one like the one in the photos. We didn't have the puller so we got the local merc dealership to do it. They snapped off one of the F$%^#@@ long thin retaining bolts and couldn't get the injector out with the correct puller, so the head had to come off, The injector got damaged. SO. . . My boss had a (LOUD) chat with them and they supplied a head set, bolts at cost, a second hand head that came with the injectors which they pulled out of the head for free. (The bottom of the injector hole was too badly eroded to machine up.) We then put it together and the job was done.

My 2005 E320 CDI had this and I fixed it on a couple of our family E320 CDI OM648 cars. 1. Throw away the foam on the top of the injectors on any CDI you own immediately. This is what melts and becomes black death goo! It does not quiet the engine down much at all in my experience. It is just a risk having it there if one of your injectors starts leaking. 2. When removing the black goo, do not use any solvents! It is much easier to pick out dry and vacuum up than if you soften it and create black swamp water. 3. I had a bore cleaning kit with a nice plug for injector inlet so no debris can enter the engine. 4. Most of the injectors that have a bad seal were due to the seal being installed upside down by some mechanic before us! The injector seal is convex on one side and more flat on the other. Make sure the orientation is correct or it will leak again soon! 5. Make sure you get new injector bolts because they stretch when torqued and the old ones are certainly worn out.
