Brian Carrie, thanks so much for inspiring to travel to your favorite places. So far, my 25 days tour of Portugal and Spain has been amazing. I started in Lisbon with day trip to Sintra, Porto with day trip to the Douro River and now Lagos (Algarve). Just finished a9 miles hike from Lagos to Praia da Luz. The trail is in pristine conditions with amazing views of the jagged cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. Brian, now I know why Carrie fell in love with you at “The Bull”.

Sounds like you're having a wonderful adventure in Spain and Portugal! We unfortunately didn't do the hike while we were there, mainly due to the heat. Isn't "The Bull" a great place, the view is amazing from the patio. Safe continued travels!

I'm portuguese. I found your video quite aquarate! A sugestion: Don't visit Pena palace inside, visit the National Palace inside, in Sintra. Don't visit the Torre de Belém inside but visit the Mosteiros dos Jerónimos in side (the lines are long... I know!). Take a chance, to visit Alentejo: Monsaraz, Marvão, Évora.

When we were in Lisbon, we took a day trip to Evora by bus. The town has beautiful cathedral and a well preserved Roman temple, but the highlight of the trip was the Bone Chapel. It was a unique and memorable experience.

I'm going to bookmark this one. I've been trying to get to Portugal for decades, but every time I've been in Europe, I have never had the time to add it onto my trips, not even the 10-week ones in Europe. Porto sounds great and is high on my list in Portugal. Friends have been going for decades.

@@andreablack4573 It's always been way out of my way from northern Scandinavia. But, in summer 2017, I did finally get as far south as Seville, Spain after decades of back and forth to Europe nearly annually. But, it took two flights to get there from the north to the south. And back in the 1980s, I did get as far south as Naples, but on a very long train ride. Exhausting.

I enjoyed your Portugal presentation. In April 2024, I stayed three days on my own in central Lisbon and then hopped aboard a 12-day Portugal, somewhat small-sized guided tour sponsored out of Edmonds, WA. I had a fun and memorable time. I enjoyed my guided tour; however, I want to visit the Algarve area, not included in my organized tour, this fall and stay between 2-8 weeks (my travel planning is incomplete, yet filled with flexibility, and I am always filled with a desire for travel wonder.) I hope to return to Portugal several more times in the future. I love Portugal, the culture, and the rich travel value available to American tourists. Thank you for sharing your wanderlust travel adventures. You are both fun presenters!

Next time you have to explore the old Portuguese villages. The towns of Monsanto and Peña Garcia were amazing little places that most dont know about. There is a great little swimming hole in Peña Garcia and you can hike through old ruins up behind it. Was one of the best two days of our 16 days in Portugal.

Portugal is absolutely fabulous!! I was there just a little over a year ago. It was for 10 days, and I met up with a good German friend of mine starting in Lisbon. After a few days in Lisbon, we rented a car and drove to Porto, with a stop in Nazare to see where the surfing is. Then down to the Algarve staying at Armacao de Pera, with a day trip and kayaks in Lagos. Have the cataplana in Lagos!!! Incredible. We finished in a day at Evora. It was affordable with excelent meals, seafood, and phenomenal weather. The accommodations were good, central and well priced. I would recommend the Somebody Feed Phil episode on Lisbon (especially the Ponto Final restaurant with the tables on the jetty). Your ideas are amazing! Portugal is a place I definitely intend on revisiting and spending more time. Madeira is a place that cries out for me too. Cheers!

Great video, y'all! We just got back from a month long trip to Portugal and did pretty much the same itinerary. We LOVED Tavira. You didn't mention the food! Portugal may rival Italy in terms of food. For Sintra, the exterior of the Pena Palace was the highlight, so you didn't miss much IMO. For interiors, the Monseratte Palace was totally worth it. The road around Sintra is a one-way loop, so you want to plan accordingly. Driving in Sintra was terrifying. Don't forget to get the insurance with the rental cars! Tons of opportunity for a scratch & ding situation. (Not that I know from experience in Lagos or anything. 😳) If you haven't been to Portugal, this video is a great primer.

Thank you so much ♥. Sounds like you had a wonderful trip. I loved Sintra, but both times I went, taking the train was the easiest way. The elevator in Lisbon....our tour guide show us a way how to walk up without the elevator and get to the views and no line. I do not understand that line..the best view is being on top, the attraction is not the elevator. I go back this Fall and booked a hotel close to the elevator, in Rossio square. Last yeat we stayed in Alfama and was so so many stairs but Rossio area should be good. This year we added Porto and will be there for 8 nights, 7 full days and will be first time. I am excited to be flexible with what to do there as we go in November and might be some rain so we will plan the activitites close to the day. Day trip to Coimbra for sure. Aveiro...now that you saia is not a big deal we might skip. There are so many things to do in Porto and around. And excited for the train ride to Lisbon and back. I will go with my husband for our 16th year wedding anniversary. Last year I was there with my mom.

Appreciated hearing options for those that just don't drink alcohol. We flew into Lisbon & took the train to Albufeira, for 5 days in the Algarve. Did not rent a car. Day trips to Carvoeiro for the boardwalk & boat trip dolphin watching & cave tour. Took bus' north for 2days in Obidos. We also found the Rapida Verde bus from Campo Grande to Obidos! Worth it for us, as we stayed over & enjoyed the quiet evening in the beautiful village! Then 6 days in Lisbon with day trips to Tomar, Sintra & the coast. Amazing trip, planning our return trip!

Also LOVED Obidos! One of my all-time favorite places in Portugal. You guys hit all of our favorite places! Cascais was amazing! I got glass in my foot on the beach in Nazare. I'd say to be sure to go the Madeira if time allows. It's a 90 minute flight from Lisbon and very worthwhile to stay for a couple days at least.

Some more sugestions like Óbidos: Marvão (close to the spanish border), it's common speech that from de high point of Marvão in a clear day, we can see the top of Madrid buildings (I don't believe in that, but...); Reguengos de Monsaraz with a breathtaking view over the Alqueva lake and the surroundings; Almeida, again close to spanish border and a masterpiece of military architecture; Monsanto, considered the most portuguese village of Portugal. And there is way much more to see than just this sugestions.

Again perfect timing this video. We ccmpleted our Norwegian Fjords cruise and currently staying in Budapest, Hungary until end of May. Booked a direct Ryan Air flight to Faro from here for 2nd of May. Now in the process of booking accommodation between Faro and Lagos, Airbnb search showing quite a few different properties scattered around on different towns along the beach. Of course the rates have gone up a lot in Portugal in general. One question how long you rented the car when you were there in Lagos ? Did you rent entire your stay and dropped back in Faro airport ? What kind of options for rental car pickup and drop from Faro Airport. Which rental car company you folks used and any specific rental sites to book ?

20:48 - Correction: There are three (3) terminal stations in Lisboa (Rossio, Santa Apolónia, Cais do Sodré). The Cascais trains depart from Cais do Sodré (Cascais, like Sintra, is also a terminal) - not Santa Apolónia. To get between the train stations, there is a Metro (subway). Bus to Óbidos leaves from near Campo Grande metro, so taxi or Uber is not necessary, but there has been a lot of construction there (c2024) so the bus platforms have been moving targets. Otherwise, great info, and thanks for the vid.

The site has you have to print off the boarding pass. How do you do this when you are travelling? And, how far in advance did you book your flight? Appreciate the Algarve tips, as I'm not finding consistent information on that.

We have had to print off tickets a few times during our travels and we just Google "print and copy" and print shops will come up all over. We didn't know it was a thing until we needed to do it! Our RyanAir flight was booked well in advance because at the time, it was a vacation. You can usually book those flights within a few days prior. Thank you for watching and have a fantastic time in Portugal!!
      Cheers!!🍻

So we are working on an itinerary for Portugal flying into Porto to start. We are looking a month, slow travel. Where would you go as a slow traveler to base?

First off, you'll love Porto, very cool city. For an extended stay we would choose Lisbon. There is a lot to do in the city itself and the day trips we mentioned are a must. The airports are easy to navigate as well if you choose to fly down to the Algarve. Enjoy your time and thank you for watching our channel!!
      Cheers!!🍻

Just did a google map, and find that driving from our new home in Spain will only be about 5 1/2 hours to Sagres!

It will be worth the trip, Mike!! And yes, there is a walking path on that bridge in Porto that is AWAY from the rail! I stayed on the path!! 🤣

      So, what do you recommend.
rent for 3 months in Portugal and travel around the country and Europe or for 1 month
and then rent in other countries?
      Italy, France, etc.

      By the way.
We're Brazilians and, of course, we speak português.
When you pronounce the word lagos, you speak with a Portuguese accent from Portugal.
      Sounds funny to us.
Actually, I love the way português people talk.
      Lol

Same here as to Portugal and drank the Kool-Aid last year for our big move and home purchase after several trips there. Sold the house and everything blah blah blah. Then golden visa got killed NHR reduced to nothing with 48% tax on income so we killed it and started slow travel forever in June. Remember you also cannot leave if you get a visa for over 4 months every year. Still love Portugal but it has serious political and other problems that cannot be depended upon safely. The Ex Pats that are blogging from there are just trying to keep their subscribers and ignoring these real issues. When their tax breaks ends in a few years they will be priced out even on their social security. However, if you are are subsistence earners go for it.

I appreciated and enjoyed your informative post. I have been drinking ‘Portugal Kool-Aid’ for a few years now. I, too, have decided to enjoy slow travel instead of setting up residency on foreign soil. The positive influence of Carrie and Brian has also influenced my decision to continue slow travel. My Portugal-related residency due diligence was confirmed this past April when I visited Portugal and learned the average income of local Portuguese residents is less than $1,000 (US) per month. Property values have skyrocketed in the last few years, local income is not keeping up with inflated costs, and the locals are economically taken advantage of by Ex-Patriot Social Security checks and retirement annuities and savings. When locals cannot afford bread, rioting can quickly occur in the streets. Enjoy your slow travel adventures.

@@patfrancisco9646 Wow could not have said it better. The PT pod casters sound like they heroes on their podcasts but they were just low earners that wanted to take advantage lower and better everything in Portugal. Now they make money by mapping out how to do the same for others like them to come Also agree Brian and Carrie are great resources for taking the other path.

Moving to Portugal in the next few months. Taxes are progressive and 48% is the highest bracket but it also depends on your income type. Income from stock capital gains is taxed at 28%. Every place has issues, US has huge political issues too!

These are all very valid points for sure! We love Portugal, but slow travel is for us anyway and we don't look to settle anywhere permanently anytime soon. Every place does come with downsides, so everyone has to do their own research and see if the pros outweigh the cons. Cheers!

The killing of NHR should not impact if you are a US tax filing citizen. US has a Dual taxation treaty with about 52 countries. Lets say you are a US Citizen, and live in Portugal for more than 183 days in a year. You will then have to file Portuguese taxes each year. Yes Portugal will tax you at their rate on all incomes word wide that are defined in their tax law. So you have to pay it to Portugal. Being a US Citizen you still have to file US taxes even though you don't physically live in US, unless you renounced US citizenship. When you file your US taxes, you can list the foreign taxes you paid (those that Portugal or other dual taxation treaty countries took) and claim them back. I am telling this from my personal status. I have properties and investments in another country and they deduct taxes on my income, cap gain etc., and I claim them back. Of course, I have to list the income I earned on those investments abroad, and pay the taxes due to the US govt. In other words you only pay taxes once and not twice and US tax laws allow recouping the foreign taxes. Check with your tax advisor. Also if you want to live permanent in Portugal why not consider D7 visa that has a much easier qualification and no need to invest huge $$ on property? keep it simple. just my humble opinion. If you find the info i gave incorrect, please feel free to comment.
