Guys, I have lived permanently in the Algarve for 17 years now and I would congratulate you on producing a really great, and comprehensive coverage of where its at here. Good trip home and we'll see you back soon!
Thank you, Michael! Love the Algarve and hope to be back soon. We don't have a home so it may be sooner than later! 😀 Your comment inspires us and leads us to believe we are on the right path. Thank you!! Cheers!!!🍻
Hi guys I'm an English man living in Tavira for 37 yrs ,best thing I ever did coming to Portugal , lo my life here. I am a painter and sculpter . . I created a semy tropical garden over a few years and it's my little paradise
Hi, Bill. The Algarve is still our number 1 destination in our year plus of travel. We love Cabanas, Tavira, Vila Real, and Lagos. We do prefer the eastern half of the Algarve. Your little paradise is amazing! Thank you for watching and commenting! Cheers!!!🍻
Hi Bill…I am artist myself and wondering if there is one city in the Algarve where the art community have congregated. I am looking to relocate and hoping to connect with like-minded people to find community.
@@northernreflections4653 Hi I live in a small village near what I think is best town in the east part of the Algarve ,the town bis called Tavira . My village is full of artistic people from many different countries,I have come to for me the best place I could be in ,😎
My dad was born there and sadly passed away last year. My dream is to get there this year to visit his grave. I am an artist too and I am sure I would find inspiration there. How lucky you are to live there and practise your art.✌️🙏
I spent 10 days in Portugal this summer with my daughter and grandson. I'll be emigrating there next summer and have had relocation consultants working on my plan for about 6 months now. I loved Portimão and that museum (located in a former sardine cannery) is definitely not to be missed. We also went to Coimbra, Peniche, Ericeira, Lagos, Loulé, and Lisbon. I enjoyed everywhere we went! I am inclined toward the Algarve because it is warmer and I tend to be cold-natured. Thanks so much for this video. You have given me some ideas because I am not sure yet where I want to move first. I'll check out some of your other videos now that I have discovered your channel.
Thank you so much! We were in Portugal 3 years ago for a vacation and loved it so much that we went back for this two-month stretch just to make sure. Portugal is the reason we are on the path we are now. Thank you again for watching our channel!! Cheers!!!🍻

My wife and I may be in a very similar situation. I work in I.T. and my skill set allows me to work anywhere there's an internet connection. We'll be traveling to Portugal in February to March of 2023. My wife was initially thinking Lisbon, but after looking at some of the housing prices, I'm thinking Algarve (specifically Faro/Albufeira), so we'll see how the trip goes. I'm curious as to how your planning is going to making that move. We're moving from U.S.A. and I'll be working for a company based in U.S., but I already have a CPA and that company has employees that work in different countries (Brazil, Mexico, Qatar, etc...), but what are some of the challenges you've faced while preparing for the move, and about how long do you think it would take to make that transition? Thanks for your insight!
Thanks for the info on "walkability " of the Algarve. I have mobility issues so the helps a lot. Lisbons nickname is the city of seven hills. So ... hilly.
My family and I visited Lagos in July 2022. We really enjoyed the beaches, the restaurants, the towns and people. The Algarve is an outdoor paradise. ❤
Hello guys , nice!!, thank you for all of your great content, it would be interesting to see a video comparing Portugal and Spain for retiring , specially the south if Spain where you guys have spent some time, thanks again , you guys look great!
This was such an informative and enjoyable video. I’m a Canadian of Portuguese decent and currently living in The Netherlands. I have visited Portugal and the Algarve many times. My husband and I plan to spend part of the winter in the Algarve when we retire in a few years. Deciding where to stay is the big question! Some of our favourite places are Villamoura, Loule and Tavira.
We can see ou selves doing the same years from now when we aren't traveling full time. The Algarve checks so many boxes for us. We loved Tavira as well..but Villa Real was still a favorite for me. Cheers!!
We stayed in Albufeira in September and loved it. It was busy but not crazy like it is in June, July and August. I also liked Lagos. I wish I'd had more time to check out Loule and Silves as I heard good things about both. We rented a car which made the day trips very easy. The boat tour of the caves and coast is a must do!
We are a retired couple that rented an apartment in Lagos for the past year. I'd have to agree, that for us, Lagos is a bit too quiet in the winter. Many restaurants are closed for the season and there are far fewer people around. We have recently moved to the Tomar area and we'll see what life will be like here in the coming months and hopefully years.
We had to look up where Tomar is, and it looks very nice! One thing that we would like to do is stay in the Algarve and take weekend trips up to the northern regions. We have been to Porto and Lisbon and would love to return. Portugal is amazing! 🍻
Only Faro and Portimão can offer a descent life all year round. The rest are are all like villages. Personally i don't like Lagos, it's not my place, but the beach cliffs are stunning yes and freezing water too. Plus it's not a place for old people. For old people its much better the East side after Faro. Flat nice and easy.
Hey I was thinking to move to Algarve and then I came across Tomar and now my head is spinning. Really interested of your experience there and how it differs from Algarve? Many thanks
We live in a house in the country-side about twenty minutes from Tomar. We like the peace and quiet here. We drive to different towns in the area for a change of pace. @@ninapryadko9306
I have to say your comment about the grocery stores is spot on. We have been to several of the countries you have been to over the past few months and found the same thing. We like one stop shopping.
When we started our travels we actually looked forward to the markets, butchers, and bakeries but walking into a grocery store that has what we need is just better!😀 Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie I agree the supermarkets like Pingo Doce and Continente to be very nice. However (comparing Tavira with Cabanas), I found Cabanas to only have two very small grocery stores so that situation wouldn’t work for me when choosing a place to live/retire. Am I missing something about Cabanas? Thanks.
Thanks, Craig! We have a short one tonight and a cost of living one next Saturday so we aren't quite done yet!!😀 We love Portugal!! Thank you for watching. Cheers!!!🍻
Very helpful video, although I agree with him, Lagos top 1 to live, Vila Real is very nice but very quiet town, and indeed Tavira and Faro a bit far from the beach. You missed Vilamoura/Quarteira also pleasant
Thanks for this very helpful, comprehensive video! I have the impression from other videos I've seen elsewhere that Vila Real de Santo António has a fairly sizeable year-round expat population so the businesses don't shut down in winter like some other smaller towns may do. But I haven't been there in winter and could be mistaken.
Hi Beth. That could very well be true, I was just speculating. You do have a very good point about the ex-pat population and are probably correct. We really loved the area and can see ourselves there for months at a time whenever the time comes. Thank you for watching!! Cheers!!!🍻
I really appreciate this video. My wife and I are considering moving to the Algarve and this video has been the most helpful in gathering info and narrowing down our destination.
I thought your video was well-done and very informative. As a year-round Faro resident I thought your comment that the city was not beautiful was spot on. There are so many great things about living in Faro: location, affordability, dining, but there are prettier places to live. I guess like so many other things in life, it's a trade-off.
Thank you, Christopher. We have learned that people go to places based on our videos. We just want to give a respectful, honest description of where we are. We love the Algarve and Portugal and will be back someday!! Thank you again for your comment. Cheers!!!🍻
We did a bike tour from Vila Real de Santo Antônio to Sagres and absolutely love it! We are going back to spend some time in Praia da Rocha in Portimao. But your video inspired me to go more places in the Algarve and explore even more. Thank you!
We had just returned from visiting Algarve. We found that the "Mer" cafe on top of the cliff in Lagos has the best tapas in the region. Highly recommend!
Thank you so much for this helpful video! We spent 3 weeks in Carvoeiro this October and loved it but we are looking for a place to spend the winter months and need a town that’s a little larger. It’s now between Lagos and Albufeira for us. We did a day trip to Seville from Carvoeiro on the bus. Long day but totally worth it! Love your videos. You’re helping us spend our retirement savings 😂
Thank you for the kind words!! We do prefer Lagos to Albufeira although Albufeira is more central to the rest of the Algarve. The Eastern Algarve is really quiet in the winter months so being central may not really make a difference. Thank you again for watching our channel and safe travels. Cheers!!🍻
Thank you! Lagos was windy in the late spring while we were there. We know that the smaller places like Cabanas and Vila Real will get slow in the winter time.
Nice video info on Algarve! We enjoyed 6days in Albufeira in April before finishing our trip in Lisbon. We took a Bolt car to Caviero boardwalk & walked back towards our Apt along the coast & got another Bolt car the rest of the way back, stopping in Albufeira old town for lunch. Would Love to see more travels on Silver coast or Porto. Probably our next trip.
Fantastic and informative video about your experience in the Algarve. As soon as we arrived in Vila Real there was no doubt about it but we were hooked and said we would live there some day. This year we arrived for good and bought a really nice compact apartment a few minutes walk to the Square. We have settled in well and are enjoying the good weather, nice people and great beaches. We have the market across the road and the four main supermarkets a short walk away. We are also about ten minutes walk from the railway station and five minutes to the bus station. We do most of our socialising during the day, ie meet up for coffee, go for drives or cycle to Monte Gordo or further. Winter is quiet but there are still some festivals going on year round so always something to look forward to.
We will be excited to go back when the time comes. After 2 plus years, we still have the Algarve at the top of our list. Thank you for watching and commenting!! ❤
Hi, why you mentioned Vila Real, I looked at map, it’s way up North. I thought the video is about the South ie. Faro Lagos Albufeira, etc … I am confusing the Via Real mentioning in this video. Thanks.
Thank you! Another amazing video, I really appreciate how much detail you put into each of your videos, extremely helpful. Looking forward to the next one :)
Thank you, Doreen. We want to be a little different than all the rest so try to give as much information as we can in each video. Thank you for watching!! Cheers!!🍻
Interesting that you reviewed No Loule shire. The biggest tourist spend in the Algarve. If you are looking to follow the trend in the Mediterranean, permanent residents are living in the towns in from the touristy coast. Loule, Second richest shire in the country. Extensive arts and Culture spend. Cleaner and better services than any other shire. The three exclusive areas, are on the beach with it's variable seasonal population but Loule is one that is year round. Agreed Tavira and Largos are great, but I have lived in the beachside, gost town winters and full to the brim in high season is a big negative. Having activities, services and facilities is more IMPORTANT for the happy life your viewers are seeking. Glad that you left it off the list. Thanks
Guys, Great video and some spot on observations. And love the fact that, as Americans, you don't mind walking and taking public transport. Good on you! My other half and I moved to the Algarve just before COVID in 2019 with our cat Roxy, from Sydney. After being a bit disillusioned with the suburbs of Lisbon, we first moved to Lagos, which as you say get incredibly busy over summer and dies right back in winter with only a few establishments like the expat pubs at all busy. Got a bit sick of taking the single track, diesel train to explore the rest of the coast. It does get expensive and there is a huge gap in the timetable during the middle of the day. Coach depot is at least in town but suffers from the same uneven timetable. And patrons love sitting in seats that aren't allocated to them. Recommend buying a car if you intend to be there long term (electric would be good hear are petrol prices are astronomical). Totally agree, it felt a bit like you were at the out limits of the country. Sagres is stunning but I wouldn't be going to the rugged beaches to the west every day (especially without our own transport). Only major town north is Sines, which we found a bit of an industrial port). Bus and train to Lisbon are both about 4 hours which seems slow for the distance. Portimao is an interesting town. It's kinda in four parts. The north which has a shopping centre and huge hypermarkets. The old town in the middle, which like you say doesn't have quite so much charm or history (read as - everything was built in the 70s). The DMZ as I call it which the stretch of sand dunes and scrub between the town and the beach which is also a good 30 min brisk walk. And the beach Praia da Rocha which is a kinda dated promenade in front of some old holiday high rise apartments, casino and marina (which is painted in vivid 80s orange, yellow and red). Like you say the train station is massively out of town and the bus station is only slightly closer, also one of the most desolate locations in Portugal. If you need to dump a body, this is the place. Albufeira, we found was full of bright red Brits, en masse, on footy trips watching UK Premier League on 80" TVs whilst drinking pints of two Euro Carling Black Label (oh you found the cheap lager, didn't you!). Ferreira is the station you have to change at to get to Lisbon is travelling from the west. Both train and bus station are fairly inconveniently located a taxi ride away from the old town/resort. Praia dos Pescadores is one of the best beaches on the Algarve. Loved Tavira and stayed there a while. Does really die off in winter though. It does have its own SEF/AIMA office if you need one, so you don't have to go to Faro (if you can get an appointment). The shopping centre to the east doesn't feel like it's doing well but does have a big Continente. Oceanside beaches are nice but are exposed and as this is the Atlantic not the Med the water is nearly always cold. Agree, catching the ferry gets a bit tedious. Hinterland is full of orange orchards and little Quintas, well worth a bike ride. Bar and restaurants around the river are charming. There are a lot of salt paddies producing sea salt and stunning flamingos. And proximity to Faro and Spain are a definite bonus.
Great videos you two, I like the way you have broken it all down. We spent 3 weeks there in Jan 2022 and agree with what you are saying. Thanks for doing this. Keep it up. We are heading back in Jan 2023 for 2 months.
In winter plenty of Dutch snowbirds are haeding to Monte Gordo. Flying or by campervan. Lots of things to do. BTW, in Cabanas, the boat to the beach is free for hotelguests. Like your content. Greetings from the Netherlands
Good to know about the free boat ferry! Monte Gordo is what really sold us on Vila Real. We love the area!! Thank you for watching our channel!! Cheers!!!🍻
Great information and input, guys. THANK YOU so much for sharing your findings and experience with us. It's a pleasure listening to you both and watching your video images. Highly appreciated💜💜
This was very helpful. The photos I had seen of Faro gave the impression it was squeaky clean. So your view that is wasn’t really opened my eyes. Thanks. Lagos was my number 2 voice, but it’s number 1 now.
Lagos is a great choice! The small town of Luz is an excellent place to visit while you are there as well, it's only a few minutes away. Thank you for watching and safe travels! Cheers!!🍻
There is a lot to love about Villa Real! Spain is next door; the amazing beach isn't too far away, and we like that you can jump on the train and get to Faro relatively fast to fly to the rest of Europe. Thank you for watching and commenting, Gary! Cheers!!🍻
Really enjoyed the video! My wife & I visited all those places a couple months ago except Monte Gordo. We did visit nearby Altura however, and really liked it. It's difficult to decide which town we liked the best. We also liked Loulé very much.
Hi, TJ. We wish we could have rented a car. We would have gone to several other places and probably complicated our decision on which place we like the best. There are just so many. Thanks for watching. Cheers!!!🍻
I have been watching all of your videos and click the like buttons , watching till the end, not missing the RUclips ads the least help I can do for you folks revenue wise 😀
Excellent timely video for me though I watched that time, I did a quick recap now, becoming tough as where to go whether Lagos or Vila Real or Albufeira . Cheers 😀
Nice video! You are right about the trains in Algarve. It is a pity because the ride from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António is unique. However, the Alfa and IC from Faro to Lisbon-Porto are reasonably reliable.
We have taken the train from Tune to Lisbon and had no problem. The buses have been great as well. It is really the locals that have to rely on the local train...
Excellent ,informative , always entertaining. Thank you both Happy Travels. . We are back in PNW not far from your home .. looking to Europe late August .
Thank you, Joan! We will be back in November and December for the holidays. Looking forward to friends and family but not the rain!! Love the PNW!! Thank you for the continued support! Cheers!!!🍻
Great job guys on this video. Very insightful! Wife and I are seriously considering retiring to Portugal next year. Am currently working on getting my Portuguese citizenship since all 4 of my grandparents were born in Portugal and anticipate getting citizenship warly in 2023. Therefore, we wouldn’t be limited to the “90 day stay” rule that most people have to abide by. We subscribed to your channel and look forward to checking out your other videos.
Hi, Skip! That would be amazing to get citizenship in Portugal! We have to move around Europe in and out of the Schengen area. It isn't that much of a problem until we want to stay long term. We are currently in Romania because our 90 days was up. Thank you for watching and supporting our channel. Cheers 🍻
Hi Skip, Any insight on how you obtained your grandparents’s birth certificate. My husband’s grandfather was from Portugal, but he is deceased now and no one has his birth certificate. We tried going through the consulate but the only option seems to be online and we can’t complete all of the information like his ID number and exact address. We just know he was from Viana de Castelo. Thanks for any input you might have.
Super helpful thank you! I change my mind daily on where I'd like to retire to in Portugal( 3 years). I don't think it's an armchair kind of thing. Overall it's the temperate weather that attracts me to the Algarve area in general. I also like the accessibility to Spain. I think looking around once I'm there will be key.
Absolutely!! We would recommend finding a couple places to stay for a few months and deciding from there which areas you like the best. Thank you for watching! Cheers!!🍻
Hi Guys-Thank you for an amazing review of the Pros and Cons. We are also retiring and have just booked our first trip to Portugal. Your information has been very useful. you guys are amazing! I have subscribed!
Fabulous. I am hoping to do a month this winter sometime between January and March. This is wonderful information. Thanks for the insights on the seasonal nature of the locations. Love your channel. Much appreciated.
Olá, boa tarde! What thoughtful and comprehensive video. I hope anyone looking at relocating (or even doing a long-stay) in the Algarve, will find this! Excellent information. Cheers ~
Really helpful video. Good to know that the buses are good. Too bad about the trains. Been watching quite a few videos about areas of the Algarve and this is definitely one of the most useful ones I have seen. That´s so funny, so you picked as No 1, towns at either end of the Algarve. Hmm, maybe it should be Albufeira then, right in the middle and one you both picked as No 3. My feeling is Albufeira could be a good choice for myself, but I wonder if it might be too shut down/dead in winter... I guess many bars etc would shut, but other shops would be open for the many locals living there.
This was a great video!! Super informative & helpful. My partner and I are looking to stay in Lagos for a little over a month soon and we are very excited! ☺️💕
Well I have been watching other algarve videos specially real algarve living and boy oh boy was he dying in the heat during summer he was saying over 90 degrees to me I felt like it was my weather in vegas too hot for me…. So I wanted to look into other area but today and now its cooler days so I guess I have to go down and check for myself , Thanks for the awesome video though!!!!
Thank you. It was a hot summer this year all over it seemed like. We were in Romania at it hit 101 and we didn't have a beach to go to!! Portugal and especially the Algarve is still at the top of our list for a 3-6 month stay. Thank you for watching! Cheers!!🍻
I am new to your channel. I struggle with the names. Mostly because there are so many that are similar. It is helpful when you describe where it is (I can hopefully find it on a map with descriptors)
Great take on the Algarve. I can understand the attraction of the coast to anyone visiting the Algarve. But there certainly is a lot for nature lovers and those looking for outdoor activities moving north from the coastline to the slightly more inland side of the Algarve. Places like for example Alcoutim if you're on the East coast, or Querença, Alte or Salir if you're closer to Loule. Granted these places will be picturesque, but a lot quieter; and there will be the need to drive to the next biggest town for many of the services required.
Thank you for this topic, Jose! We talked to a few people that had told us the same thing but without transportation to get to the places that you mention we really couldn't speak much about it. So many places to explore in the Algarve we obviously need to come back soon. Thank you for adding to the channel! Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie this is true. The transport is a problem. I am glad that on the whole you really enjoyed the Algarve region. Having worked mainly for foreign clients as an architect Portugal seems to be attracting a considerable amount of American citizens recently. The Algarve has always been a second home haven for the British, Germans and Dutch citizens.
I love your video. Thank you fir all information. They are so important for me since I’m planning to retire in Portugal. I moved 2 years ago to my homeland (Poland) after many years in states but I don’t like weather in my area. Thanks❤
Great video! Thank you for all the details. Super helpful! Would you recommend Algavre during second half of November (Thanksgiving week in US)? I saw Nov & Dec. get most of the rain.
Thank you a lot for this video. I watched it before coming here and now it has become even more "relatable", including the dental issue: can you please tell me to which female dentist you went? That would be awesome!
@@BrianandCarrie I followed your advice. Unfortunately, they only have the next free appointment on Monday which I accepted. Then, a very nice doctor, Gabriella, emerged from preparing for surgery and said that she was alone right now but would call if they had any cancellations. The whole first impression, both from the receptionist and the doctor makes you feel in good hands. In my experience, there is a direct correlation between attitudes like kindness and professional skills. Again, thanks a lot!
I've enjoyed watching bingewatching your videos and want to do the same thing and check out some towns a month a time in Spain, Portugal and Albania. Thanks to you we'll check out Vila Real, Albuferia, and Lagos plus Tavira. I loved your info on Valencia and Alicante and I'm curious how you would rate them in comparison to the Algarve?
Hi Merrill - very good question! We definitely love the Algarve and can see that as place we will be back to for extended periods. Valencia was a great City, but for us a bit to big and to far from the water. Alicante, like the Algarve checked so many boxes for us but once again a bit bigger feel of a city. But for those looking for that bigger city beach town, Alicante should be a must see! Thank you so much for watching.
Thank you both for a well-balanced and comprehensive review (from your perspective) of cities in Algarve. We visited Tavira, VRSA, Faro and Olhao last November and loved the area. Your video reminds me there’s more to see and consider-of course. Your work is very much appreciated. 🙏🏻👍🏻
We wish we could have rented a car to see everything the Algarve has to offer. We would have liked to get up into the mountains and the west coast. We just couldn't get to every place we wanted to. Guess we will have to go back!!
@@BrianandCarrie For sure. There’s always more one could see. BTW-forgot to mention how I appreciate your travels by train and bus as we did the same! Nearly everyone says you need a car and we’d rather not buy one if we can avoid it. Cheers.
We don't want the responsibility or the expenses of a car. There have been only a couple times that we can think of that it would have been nice. The Algarve was one of those times but we still managed. 🍻
@@BrianandCarrie Agreed. We did the same with our trip to the eastern Algarve late last year. Many say a trip to the Algarve "can't be done" without a car. If large supermarket runs and sightseeing are part of the plan--of course a car may be required--but not convinced (from a living standpoint) a car is "essential" provided you're within walking distance of a train station and/or have access to local buses or taxis. This is a lifestyle we have today (SF Bay Area) and hope continue having if/when we retire to PT. Cheers.
Just curious when you mention the gorgeous beaches... is the water temperature enjoyable or cold? Have been thinking of retiring more in Spain because I want the warmer water. Thank you. really enjoying your informative videos.
Hi, Jack. We did not get the chance. We love the Algarve and will return so we will add it to our list. Thank you for watching and commenting!! Cheers!!🍻
Hi Brian and Carrie! I love your channel and wanted to get your input on the best places for travel to for a 10 day trip to Lisbon (no car - plan to take public transit) in late Nov/early Dec 2024. I'm more than happy to do some research and can plan but love your input on which cities you love... we fly into Lisbon, and I want to do Lisbon, Porto and any other GREAT options for Portugal in the off season. I also was thinking to do Madrid and Seville in Spain (depending if we can get a good train or even cheap flight). THANK YOU FOR ANY TIPS OR HELP!!! Cheers!!!!!
You have to go to Obidose and Sintra while in Lisbon. We did a day trip to Guimaraes and stayed the night in the Douro Valley while in Porto. We took trains and buses to each location without any issues. Thank you for watching and happy travels!! Cheers!!🍻
Thank you so so so much@@BrianandCarrie !!!! Have a tremendous time in Italy soon and glad you got some extended time in WA state for the holidays and into the new year!
We were there in May and June 2022 and our accommodations have gone way up in price since we have been there. For that reason and a few others, we no longer give out our previous stays.
nice stuff thanks - its American/Canadian v Portugal - no English NHS v others as NHS is marvellous - trains allow discounts for Pensioners -- property costs are for those with money - fast is not a Portuguese way - one problem = the more info u give out the more rich visit and poorer people cannot afford
Family of four with small children. We go out for Menu do Dia and cafes every day. We like a walkable city that is pretty. We spent a month in Aveiro and liked it. What do you recommend or not ?
We have many videos on the Algarve, all the areas will offer similar things to do, it's all about picking what you think will fit your family best. Cheers 🍻
We did miss a few places. We would highly recommend renting a car to explore ALL of the Algarve. We did spend 3 weeks in Portugal about 4 years ago and did rent a car and made our way out to Sagres. When we decide to stop and take a travel break our landing spot will be someplace east of Tavira. We really liked Vila Real, we could be neighbors for a three-month stretch someday. 🙂 Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie Well I'm in Sydney ATM, but we are going back to Portugal by December, Sydney is ok, but the lifestyle and quality in Portugal is superior...between paying 14$ for a beer and paying 1.4 euros,I prefer paying 1.4 euros. Plus I'm sick of burgers and fish and chips, and fried calamari, pizzas etc etc...Australian food.
Hi guys! I'm planning on retiring to Portugal but I have to live off my ss, so on an extreme budget. That's why I'm looking to purchase a little place in central Portugal, are there any good deals to be had in the Algarve region perhaps further inland? Loved your video. Lilly
Hi! We love the Algarve ❤️. As far as housing prices, we unfortunately would not know as this isn't a area we looked into yet. Happy searching, is such a beautiful place to settle down.
This comment means no hate or disrespect!! I just wanted to say that it’s amazing that many people are falling in love with our country and also share their love with many others because it is indeed a beautiful country to live in 4 many reasons but one thing no one mentions is that because of the immense amount of foreigners coming to live here while having more financial structure it is making the lives of the portuguese harder since its making the Inflation really bad ( this is not the only reason) and we are starting to not be able to afford basic stuff while the minimum wage barely goes up. Our government is profiting from this immensely while the people are living in struggle. So saying this I really appreciate that u guys did in fact mention this so people know. I love that we are becoming more diverse but this is a clear issue that our government doesn’t seem to resolve and its totally their fault, no guilt being thrown to foreigners, we portuguese love people in general!
And you are welcome to come live here ofc please do not think otherwise! Just criticizing our government’s lack of problem solving especially with this situation!
Hi, Maryana. We completely understand your point of view and no disrespect is taken. In all honesty, it doesn't seem to matter what country we visit, including our own, that we hear this argument. We started this journey of ours after realizing that we can hardly get by with the cost of living in our hometown. Inflation is worldwide. There are a lot of factors, as you mention, no easy fix and really no answer. Thank you for your comments and for being so welcoming. We love Portugal and hope to return for a long visit sometime soon. ❤
I just discovered you guys. Thumbs up. I noticed in most of your shots the people were fellow middle- and retirement-aged people. I'm 70 years old and would find that rather, um, boring. It's not that I'm a party animal, I just like a more representative population. Maybe the off-season had something to do with that?
Hi, Al. Yes, we do also like some action around us as well. Some places that we have gone to in the off-season have been a bit slower than we like. The Algarve is an amazing place but will shut down in the winter months. We were there in April and May, so things were starting to liven up as we were there. We actually decided to leave Budva, Montenegro last winter because everything was mostly closed and we got bored. 😀 Thank you for finding our channel and watching! The comments are very much appreciated. Cheers!!!🍻

Tavira is stunning just visited few days ago.

So ... hilly.
Yes, Lisbon is very hilly 🥺. We were happy to see how walkable majority of the Algarve was. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers!!
My family and I visited Lagos in July 2022. We really enjoyed the beaches, the restaurants, the towns and people. The Algarve is an outdoor paradise. ❤
I am in the Argarve right now....I love it here....I love the west coast as well...the waves...just amazing.
Great video. Headed to the Algarve for the second time in three weeks. Thanks for the tips. You guys are great.
Thank you, Rick! Safe travels and happy new year!
Love the Algarve. My wife and I plan to retire there in 2026. Thank you for the information and Brian, awesome hat!
We're glad you enjoyed the video! We may see you there soon! 😁 Thank you for watching!!
Loved this thank you
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching! 😊
Hello guys , nice!!, thank you for all of your great content, it would be interesting to see a video comparing Portugal and Spain for retiring , specially the south if Spain where you guys have spent some time, thanks again , you guys look great!
That is a great idea. We will probably do something like that in the coming months. Thank you for the comments and support!

We will definitely rent a car the next time we are there!
When we started our travels we actually looked forward to the markets, butchers, and bakeries but walking into a grocery store that has what we need is just better!😀
Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie I agree the supermarkets like Pingo Doce and Continente to be very nice. However (comparing Tavira with Cabanas), I found Cabanas to only have two very small grocery stores so that situation wouldn’t work for me when choosing a place to live/retire. Am I missing something about Cabanas? Thanks.
You are not missing anything and that is why it was not on our top three list. We really liked Cabanas but it did not check that box, unfortunately.
@@BrianandCarrie Thanks for your reply. 👍🏻
Thank you both! Your video was very informative and beautiful! Well presented. Congratulations and Happy New Year!
Thank you so much! Happy New Year!
Really appreciate your Portugal series. Sad you are moving on. Thank you both
Thanks, Craig!
Thanks so much for watching 😊, we plan to see that area next time we visit.
That's so great to hear 😊. Best of luck in your research and planning. Cheers!!
Very well. really enjoyed . Cheers from Oslo, Norway
Thank you for watching!!!

Thank you!
That sounds like a great bike trip!! We did make our way to Sagres a few years back while vacationing. Beautiful!!
We have lived in Lagos for 4 years. Love it.
Lagos and the Algarve is still #1 on our list!!
Yes my family home town Lagis is one of the best area's in the Algarve ❤❤
We had just returned from visiting Algarve. We found that the "Mer" cafe on top of the cliff in Lagos has the best tapas in the region. Highly recommend!
Great tip! We left yesterday and unfortunately didn't get the opportunity to check it out. We will be back someday!! Thanks for watching!
Cheers!!!🍻
I believe you mean Mar restaurant? I was their today and they have the best Sangria and views around!!
Cheers!!🍻
Great videos ! Thanks for that.
Isn’t Lagos a bit too windy ? And what town in Algarve is not too empty in the winter time ?
Thank you! Lagos was windy in the late spring while we were there. We know that the smaller places like Cabanas and Vila Real will get slow in the winter time.
Would be very nice if you reviewed Vilamoura/Quarteira area (comparing with others).
That is a great idea! We plan to get back to the Algarve in the next year and if we spend time in the Algarve we would hope to make it there. Cheers!!
good review , looking for off season in Portugal and this video was great Alain
Thank you for watching, Alain!

We did a Portugal video last week and show a bit of Porto in that video. Porto is one of our favorite cities.
Thanks.
Look up Villa Real De San Antonio. It is in the Algarve on the Spanish boarder.
@@BrianandCarrie are Lagos and Villa Real dog friendly? We have two pups we would bring with us.
I have been spending time in Lagos for the last 20 years and now I own a home in Meia Pria I love it
We absolutely loved our time there as well ❤️
Thank you! Another amazing video, I really appreciate how much detail you put into each of your videos, extremely helpful. Looking forward to the next one :)
Thank you, Doreen. We want to be a little different than all the rest so try to give as much information as we can in each video. Thank you for watching!!

Thanks
Guys,
Great video and some spot on observations.
Great show we are going to Portugal for 3 months 3 separate locations your show helped a lot thankfully ❤
Thank you for watching, Rick! Safe travels and enjoy Portugal!

In winter plenty of Dutch snowbirds are haeding to Monte Gordo. Flying or by campervan. Lots of things to do.
BTW, in Cabanas, the boat to the beach is free for hotelguests.

Our cab driver in Lisbon said, "my home town is Villa Real. You should go there." So we did and we loved it. Beautifully planned historic centre.
There is a lot to love about Villa Real! Spain is next door; the amazing beach isn't too far away, and we like that you can jump on the train and get to Faro relatively fast to fly to the rest of Europe. Thank you for watching and commenting, Gary!

Great video thanks. Good extra insight before we retire to VRSA.
Very lucky!! We loved VRSA!!! We will be back someday. Good luck and safe travels.

I am new to your channel. I struggle with the names. Mostly because there are so many that are similar. It is helpful when you describe where it is (I can hopefully find it on a map with descriptors)
Welcome to our channel, Cindy and thank you for watching. ❤
Fantastic overview. Thanks!

Cheers.
I took the bus from Lisbon and stayed in Olhão this past April. I just loved it, hoping to visit the next time I visit PT!
Just curious when you mention the gorgeous beaches... is the water temperature enjoyable or cold? Have been thinking of retiring more in Spain because I want the warmer water. Thank you. really enjoying your informative videos.
The water in May while we were there was a bit cold. Not so cold that you couldn't swim but colder than Spain.
I hate driving so, walkable towns are great to me!
Very insightful. Did you guys ever get a chance to spend some time at Quarteira/Vilamoura?
Hi, Jack. We did not get the chance. We love the Algarve and will return so we will add it to our list. Thank you for watching and commenting!!
Cheers!!🍻
Well done . . . thank you!
Thanks for watching, Patrick!
Cheers!!!🍻
Subbed, I wish I had your ability to do such in depth reviews of travel destinations
Thank you so much!! This is something that we are getting better at but know that we still have a lot of work to do!
Cheers!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie You guys are certainly natural presenters, and there is no pressure when you are doing it for fun and the life's passion. Cheers!
Carrie and Brian, Can I ask what accommodation you stayed in the Algarve? What months were you there? ❤️
We were there in May and June 2022 and our accommodations have gone way up in price since we have been there. For that reason and a few others, we no longer give out our previous stays.
Great vid. How about the English in the Algarve? Did everybody speak it??
We found English to be widely spoken in the Algarve. Especially in the bigger towns. Thanks for watching!
nice stuff thanks - its American/Canadian v Portugal - no English NHS v others as NHS is marvellous - trains allow discounts for Pensioners -- property costs are for those with money - fast is not a Portuguese way - one problem = the more info u give out the more rich visit and poorer people cannot afford
Thanks, Bob, we appreciate your input! Thank you for watching!!
Cheers!!!🍻
What would the average weather be like in September middle September
We haven't been there in September but imagine that it would be warm. The water is always cold however! 😊
Cheers 🍻
Nice video!! I'm from Vila Real.... :)
But looks like you miss a few great places...Vilamoura, Sagres...etc etc
We did miss a few places. We would highly recommend renting a car to explore ALL of the Algarve. We did spend 3 weeks in Portugal about 4 years ago and did rent a car and made our way out to Sagres. When we decide to stop and take a travel break our landing spot will be someplace east of Tavira. We really liked Vila Real, we could be neighbors for a three-month stretch someday. 🙂
Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie Well I'm in Sydney ATM, but we are going back to Portugal by December, Sydney is ok, but the lifestyle and quality in Portugal is superior...between paying 14$ for a beer and paying 1.4 euros,I prefer paying 1.4 euros. Plus I'm sick of burgers and fish and chips, and fried calamari, pizzas etc etc...Australian food.
September is the best month. August is to busy. March to second week of July is best for long term retirees.
Cheers!!!🍻
Well done - good pro/cons w/ mix of video. Where can you go if you still have kids? We have a tween boy who loves soccer? Safe Journeys
Europe loves soccer, so anywhere you like. Portugal would be a perfect spot!
