Please stop promoting Portugal internationally as an ideal place to buy homes🇵🇹 as it is negatively affecting my people. There is a direct link with the Airbnb, Golden Visas and Digital Nomads and the prices of homes all over Portugal. Proof of it is the fact that even the Portuguese government pretended to fix it with a new bill that they passed last July called “home for all” which still favours Golden Visas and Digital Nomads holders over their native Portuguese. Portuguese are now starting to see rich foreigners who are buying our homes on the international house market as the source of the rising houses and rental prices. How can we compete with rich foreign who are buying our homes with our minimum salaries of €760 a month?!!!! The sad reality that Golden visa holders know that they benefit of free movement all over Europe when they buy a Portuguese home above a certain price, so the house prices were forcefully inflated to accommodate the value that guarantee them the status of Golden visa. Furthermore, as they all automatically get a Portuguese passport after 5years , which grants them free access to many countries without any commitment, really. They only have to stay 7days in the country a year to apply for a Golden visa, but they are allowed to affect the house market, our life style and our power of acquisition permanently. We live in a country with portuguese salaries, but our houses are on an international market, that is problem. In addition to this, our elderly people were forced out of their rental properties in the historic centres of cities such us Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Faro, Coimbra , Braga, Funchal, Ponta Delgada,Setubal, etc. This has killed our heritage, culture and social fabric to accommodate a superficial postcard tourism that has nothing to do with us Portuguese.
@@nparasida either country would work, but opening it in the US before you leave would allow you to receive your debit card in the mail before you leave (although you can also use a digital card)
I have enough 1200 euros per month for everything, including a nice 2 bedroom apartment. I moved to Portugal from Russia and live in a town near Porto. The main thing to keep in mind is that it is very difficult to find a job here, so Portugal is ideal for those who work remotely. I stream on Twitch and make videos on RUclips. 5000 Dollars a month in Coimbra? You can rent a two bedroom apartment for 700€ per month. Even with utilities and groceries you won't get to 1500€ per month

I have lived in Portugal for over 4 year's now...Explored almost every Nook and Cranny from Bragança to Tavira from Marvão to Ponta Delgada...I live in the Capital and it has everything I need in terms of Comfort item's and lifestyle...However in the near future I've set my site's on a few place's...I favor the North for it's greenery and hiking...Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima are high on my list for beauty and quality of life...In the central part of the country I dig Aveiro and also Viseu for larger cities and for more nature I love São Pedro do Sul...Closer to the Capital...Tomar is an Charming place and also anywhere in Costa da Arrábida is awesome...Alentejo is often over looked for Algarve and it is my favorite in terms of nature and beaches...Evora is an awesome city and on the coast Vila Nova de Milfontes is my favorite coastal town...Boa Sorte!🇵🇹🤠🤟🤙🤘

I've spent a lot of time in Portugal and you are right, Portugal is beautiful. My general impression is it's more expensive than what I saw in this video. People are extremely friendly and highly educated. Most people, especially young people, are educated and can carry an intelligent conversation about what's happening throughout the world. Most speak at least three languages, Portuguese, Spanish and English. Beuatiful Country and people. The Country I would move to if I was to relocate anywhere! Porto would be my City. Beautiful river running through the City.

As a Portuguese I’m very happy to see such a positive video about my country. I agree with almost everything you said. Ericeira is also my favorite spot. But as a someone who studied 5 years in Coimbra, I can tell you that 5000€ is HUGE amount of money for any Portuguese in almost any city. To give some perspective: minimum wage is around 600€. You can very easily live with 1200/1500€ per month in Coimbra and have a quite comfortable life. Other than that, very accurate video! Congratulations 👌🏻
I've been looking at Lisbon and was sooo surprised by how much rent is??? For a renovated - small 1 bedroom can be over 2500 euro? If I'm wrong or seeing something do advise but I was shocked at the rents in Lisbon.

@@rhondacosta160 Real estate bubble because of, among others causes, xpats, golden visas, portuguese xpats that returned home... You can find 20 50k hab. towns in portugal with much lower costs and live a very nice live.
I live in Nazaré, it's my birthplace. This beautiful beach, is different from all the beaches in Portugal, for the costumes of the fishermen's women with seven skirts and for the surf of giant waves. It is only 1.15h from Lisbon.

@@Cmcg5454 It'll obviously depend on a multitude of factors (like accommodations, lifestyle, whether you're renting or buying, whether you prefer living in a bigger / more expensive city, in the suburbs of a big city or in less-expensive-to-live-in cities and towns), but it's safe to say it's way less than $5000 / mo for a comfortable life. If it wasn't, then the Portuguese people themselves (like I said in my previous comment) couldn't afford to live in their own country.
Spent 3 months in the Algarve in 2019-2020 just before the pandemic hit. Absolutely marvelous and stunning. Having traveled a lot throughout Europe, Central America and South America, this was absolutely the best of the bunch. Definitely considering retiring there.

But even working from home (we work from home even before this pandemic), it's mandatory by the company to workers go to the office every Monday morning. The cost of traveling every week from Odivelas to Porto Santo is not small.
I Lived in Lisbon 7 years, it’s a beautiful city, lots of history, monuments, night life, beaches, and much more. Lisbon has it all, but it can get very busy and crowded, the traffic can be a nightmare. In addition to the 10 best places noted in this video, also consider Figueira da Foz near Coimbra, and Angra do Heroismo, the capital of Terceira island in Azores. I could go on, and on. I live in the US and can’t wait to retire to go to Portugal and explore more places, and possibly move to.

@@ghassanjenainaty4212 Yes, there are quite a few mountains in Portugal, if you like winter sports, skying or snow boarding Covilha city located in the Serra Da Estrela national park is a good city to live in. The Serra do Gerez national park, up north on the border with Spain is also a beautiful mountain resort, the Braga city nearby is a wonderful city to live in. Located in the center of Portugal near the historic city of Coimbra there is the Bussaco mountain with its 17th century Bussaco monastery and beautiful gardens, and more to the south near Setubal city, there is the Arrabida mountain and the Sado Estuary. There are more mountain chains and National parks in Portugal, from north to south, but you get the point. The climate in Portugal is a Mediterranean type of climate, not too hot nor too cold, the more south you go the hotter it gets in the summer, and you can refresh yourself on the numerous beaches along the Portuguese coast. If you go to the north of Portugal there is more rain in the winter and it can get a little chilly with the windshield factor getting close or bellow to 0 degree celsius on certain days. One of the main priorities of Portugal is to maintain and preserve the environment, its history and culture. Portugal is one of the leading European countries in electric power generation from renewal sources of energy, specially hydro electric and wind power. Hope this helps your decision.
This video is old, but I have looked on Idealista for properties in Figueira da Foz, which seems a great compromise to being really laid back beach living, but not too far away from Lisbon and Puerto. That said, I will probably end up in Spain which I'm way more familiar with.

I've looked at Portugal and reviewed various towns and areas. Don't want to be on the Algarve, too touristy, and I don't need to be close to a beach. Lisbon is too populated, but would want a historic town, I found Elvas, which is a very much overlooked UNESCO town in far eastern Portugal, which has everything I'm looking for and lower costs than other areas.
I thought your choice was interesting. I have been living in Portugal for thirty years and I too chose a small city to live in--Chaves, way up in the north. We of course didn't choose Chaves to retire in but to start a business so our situation was different. Elvas would be an "out of the box" choice because of its distance from all the tourist places and its proximity to a large Spanish city like Badajoz. We visited many years ago but I was planning to go back once the pandemic allows us to travel freely again. I wanted to go during the Easter holidays but we cannot leave our municipality. Perhaps in June. Remember that in Elvas almost no one speaks English and you wouldn't be able to find many expats with whom to socialize once in a while. This is the "problem" we have in Chaves. Chaves of course is much larger than Elvas and has several hipermarkets, a variety of international restaurants (two sushi restaurants) and even a McDonald's and Burger King. Elvas is more rural but you do have Badajoz only a few kilometers away. I hope you like hot summers because Elvas is very hot. Badajoz in fact has some of the highest temperatures in Spain during the summer.
I agree; if you're looking for a slow pace of life and low cost of living, there are many small towns that would be a better fit than the cities and tourist destinations
Hi there, I totally agree Elvas is really amazing and less than 20 minutes from great city in Spain. Vila Real and Chaves offer pretty good lifestyle and very close to Porto!

i'm on one of the smaller islands of the azores, sao jorge, couldn't be better, wouldn't want to be on the mainland, all the other islands easy to get to.
@@VASIGTravelingLifeinLondon we do get tourists, not many and they are usually touring the islands so they don't stay long. i wouldn't want to be where it's set up for tourism, i tried that on tenerife, too noisy for me but peace and quiet doesn't suit everybody and if i want a bit more night life i'm only a ferry ride from the islands next door which have a larger population and more to do.
we have been living in Portugal for a while, and speak the language fairly well. We decided it's time to move out of Portugal. Cost of living in opposite of what people think is high. A very, very simple lifestyle will be approx. 2,000/month. Some of you guys might think this is ok. Compared to what ? keep in mind apt. are old, small, and of low quality. An old , small, ran down apt. will cost around 700-900 Euro/month. If you would like to live in a nice areas in Lisbon or Cascais the same apt. will cost you approx. 1,200/month. And is still old and small. Wanna do a business ? Good luck dealing with license , permission etc. I personally think a major correction is due in Portugal. It's all over-hyped and the PR agencies hired to promote Portugal are doing a great job attracting people to move to Portugal. 10.5 million Portuguese are paying the price for it. High cost of living, for a country that is considered as one of the poorest in EU. PR team is emphasizing the safety of Portugal....yes important but guess what EU countries in general are very safe.
Yeah I’m from Coimbra. And I’m quite confused with that. I mean I guess if you pay rent for 3 or 4 apartments in different Parts of the city, if you eat caviar everyday, if you buy a 50” TV every month, and other ridiculous luxuries, I can see 5k a month. But why? If you live in Coimbra and you spending even half of that monthly; you doing a lot of things wrong.

Portugal is one of the countries I absolutely want to visit! I have heard a lot of great things about the Algarve especially with all the beautiful landscapes along the coast. Two of my friends moved to Lagos last year, and they absolutely love it! I haven't heard of Ericeira before, but it does look nice. Great video, Kristin!
Western part (windy side as the Portuguese say) is defo the nicest in terms of natural beauty and much less densely populated. Ericeira is beautiful and has a lot going for it. Prices in terms of real estate is up though - due high demand and less supply. Awesome place. Consider also Nazare as an alternative - though not nearly as expat exposed yet!
Go visit Chaves!!!! Most beautiful city I've ever been and the nightlife is fire. Plus if you go up the mountains a bit, free mushrooms and all drugs are legal

Ponta Delgada: Beautiful, but super rainy (& windy) at times. Nature-lovers paradise. Another bonus for US-based nomads are cheap, direct flights to Boston (due to a large Azorean expat population in the Cape Cod area) on Iberia's budget airline LEVEL, only 4 hours flight and quite inexpensive! From Boston you can get to almost anywhere in the US on Spirit and Jet Blue. Recommend, though personally I enjoyed Madeira more (bit more lively, warmer climate).
I have friends in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. They tell me that the cost of living in Portugal for most people is between $1,000 and $1,500/month depending on where you live.
I live with my family in the Algarve, on a farm near Silves, the old inland capital of the region. Wonderful people, friendly and warm, with great spoken English everywhere. The coast gets busy in the summer, but not inland. Food and fuel not that cheap, but the farmers' markets are great value. We lived in Spain for a year before moving here, but we much prefer Portugal for so many reasons.
@@karelmuller6716 Spain is more oppressive, much more, with the Guardia Civil acting like mobsters, ghastly. Portugal is freer, more relaxed, warmer people, and closer to nature. Low touch police. And the Portuguese are far less nationalistic, and far more international in mindset, in the South especially. Spoken English is also much better in Portugal, everywhere.
Spot on about Sintra's climate. Took a train there in June from Lisbon, the blazing morning sun suddenly stopped after the train pulled out of the penultimate station and a dense fog fell. Still a wonderful place, and grateful for the cool when walking up to the Castelo dos Mouros, and we couldn't even see the ghastly but striking Palacio de Pena.

Great video as always Kristin! Coimbra, Porto, and the Algarve are all spectacular. I would add Aveiro, which is about 40 mins south of Porto. It’s known as the “Venice of Portugal” for its canals, and amazing seafood. Évora, in the Alentejo, is another underrated gem. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site for its Roman Ruins and cathedral, plus has some of the best food in Portugal in my opinion. Can’t wait to explore that country again!
I am a big fan of Aveiro perhaps because I have been so many times due to one of my granddaughters studying at the university there. In Aveiro you get a big city feeling with a lot of traffic and hustle and bustle. There are great beaches nearby, really not in Aviero but in Ílhavo, and you have a ferry taking you over to the peninsula of São Jacinoto. One problem I see with the city is that rent would be high due to the many university students taking almost all the apartments.
Dont know where you got the idea that it costs 5k usd /month to live in Coimbra. Lived there for over 8 years and it was cheap as it comes. With 850€ i was having the blast of life.
I was born in Lisbon and moved to England in the 90s because of the lack of jobs, better education, better opportunities... like 100s of thousands of migrants. When I was at school in the late 1980s and early 1990s we were told that the plan for Portugal in Europe was to turn it in to a tourist destination. Well they truly achieved their goal. Its crazy that the people that were born there had to leave in great numbers and now Americans, Germans, English... are enjoying our country.

@@A_Bunch_of_Savages I've taken that flight, its a pretty normal fare, so don't sweat it, and book whenever you can. Best to just book directly through their website. They also fly several times a week nonstop between PDL and Madeira (FNC) for about $100 roundtrip, I've taken that flight too....2 hours in a prop plane.
Great video, useful information, but - the greatest attraction of Portugal is the local PEOPLE, so charming, welcoming, unusually decent and tolerant. Without their virtues, nobody would feel welcome despite the beauty, nature, climate and cost of living.
Lovely video on Portugal. We have been here for 5 months and recently purchased a ruin to renovate. This is a good introduction for Portugal, the countryside has so much to offer as well and always have great cities within a couple of hours or less for weekend breaks! Which, may be a good option for digital nomads as well :)

Coimbra district have many smaller towns where the cost of living is a fraction of the big cities, maybe with a bit less conveniences, but with other little things to enjoy in return. I also like the fact, life is slow and relaxed in that area, and within 20min you can either be in Coimbra centre or at the beach looking at the Atlantic.
The new EU laws on property will effect many people, apart from new property that are well designed. The True Citizen, True Born Act will only allow people born in EU with both parents born in EU to live,work and travel. This will ensure the safety and security of the EU and its Citizens.

@@charliecarlospatrici minimum wage is not the same as the average salary. Besides it's 685x14/12= 800€. The average salary is of course higher than that. Actually in 2020 it was 1314€. Can't you tell the difference between the two? It's not that difficult.
I knew Ericeira would be #1 since its the surfing capital of Europe. Only place I liked that you didn't mention is Caldas da Rainha. Guimarães is also good if you like medieval history and the best burger in portugal . Its a little hotter since its closer to the interior of the country and you have to drive 45 mins to the ocean.

Random thought: Have you ever noticed how "expat" only refers to English speaking people from the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia and NZ? There's no such thing as a Japanese expat who now lives in America. But an American who moves to Japan IS an expat., otherwise you're an immigrant.
You forgot to mention AVEIRO. This region includes villages such as Murtosa, Torreira, Bestida and Sao Jacinto which are some of the most beautiful regions of northern Portugal. I know because I have been there and highly recommend it.

Thanks, I knew nothing about Guimarães - looks very nice. One thing on my list for the ideal location, is a place where people don't say rr like they're trying to get something unstuck in their mouth, and often this seems to be an advantage of the northern interior that might compensate for the colder winters.
Only know few basic Portuguese phrases ,why does Spanish language seem more attainable? I'm aware of commonality of the two languages but Portuguese seems more daunting for speech.

Kristin, how did you came up with the $5000/month in Coimbra? Too steep for my country. I don´t think that even in Lisbon and Porto reach those amounts, unless you live in a luxury apartment.

I also had the same reaction as you did. Few people in Coimbra have 5000 dollars a month to spend. Coimbra is not considered by Portuguese to be an expensive city. What we have to look at is rent in different places. Everything else (groceries, utilities, transport, restaurants) is about the same. Lisbon is definitely the most expensive place to live in due to high rent. Maybe Porto would be second, and then Braga and Coimbra. If you really wanted to save on rent, you could live in Viseu, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Figueira da Foz, or maybe Leiria. I live in Chaves, where there are no expats, and I am used to it. It's not for everyone though.

My mother is from Malta, and I love that it will cost less than $400 per person to fly there, to see my family, from Portugal. Bloggers often post top reasons to travel (or even move/retire) and things to do and see in Portugal…sounding a lot like promoting tourism for profit. Rarely do bloggers talk about the other (ugly) side and things that you would consider avoiding. Posting both the pros and cons from views of the locals, tourists and expats is the right thing to do…how do locals feel about tourists and expats and how do tourists and expats feel about the locals.
Im from Coimbra born and raised, cost of living is much cheaper than that (but I think that was already mentioned).. lived in Alcântara for a year and would recommend it to everyone, rent is a bit pricier but it's much closer to all the bars, LX factory, clubs, everything! Great video!
We live in Cascais, its gorgeous and chill but super easy to get to city center Lisbon if you want. A bit pricey but if you’re not in the center of town you can still find some reasonable flats!
We visited Lisbon, Porto, Ericeira, Douro Valley and stopped briefly in a couple other spots, too briefly to have an opinion. Each City has a wildly different vibe. What surprised me the most was the terrain. Walking Lisbon and Porto is a workout. The sidewalks and streets, in most touristy areas in Lisbon and Porto (except next to water), were super unfriendly to wheelchairs and people who would have trouble with steps, hills and uneven surfaces. We loved it and will go back soon, however those who have issues with physical disabilities need to be aware.

On average (for 2 pax), monthly bills like Electricity & Gas (80EUR), Water (25EUR), TV phone & internet (30EUR), groceries (250EUR), health insurance (80EUR), public transportation (80EUR) will be mostly the same in all cities. The big variations can be on apartment rentals and entertainment spending. Rents in Portugal average at 600EUR (for a one bedroom apartment), but cities like Lisbon and Porto will be 20-30% higher. So i guess we can say that the cost of living for Portugal averages at 1300 EUR (2 pax) and you will need to add 20-30% for the 'big' cities of Lisbon, Porto, Braga & Coimbra. Please go live anywhere besides Lisbon, Porto and Algarve. Locals are being forced out of those places because expats and tourist are making the prices skyrocket. Also, it can’t be true that the cost of living in Coimbra reaches 5000$ since less than 1% of the portuguese earn that kind of money. And Coimbra is cheaper than Lisbon and Porto.
Totally agree. I’ve lived in Cascais/Estoril for over 20 years, but since Lisbon became “cool” it’s been swamped with tourists. Now often difficult to get into my favourite restaurants. And when the Web Summit is in town, it’s horrendous.

I would put Porto in a much higher place if not in 1st place! Due to quality of life, amenities and yet still more affordable than Lisbon! I also would add Aveiro to the list!
We been living in Cabanas by Tavira in the Algarve but are currently on Madeira investigating purchasing a home here. We love hiking, mountain biking, paragliding so Madeira is perfect for us. Plus the annual temperature range is ideal for the central California transplant.
What's special about traveling around Portugal is that there are so MANY great cities, and relatively close together. Viana do Castelo, Guimaraes, Amarante, Lamego, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Marvão, Elvas, Estramoz, Evora, Beja... Just too many to mention.

Luis Santos is correct.. the most expensive city in Portugal is Lisbon and you were expat there.. Coimbra is expensive because of the Universty students. (One of the most ancient Universities that still existing 1290 B.C) . but 5000 euros it's not correct.. should be like Lisbon maximum.. I'm from Oporto and I have a house in Vila Nova de Gaia (the city in the other side of the River Douro).. 17 km of beachs.. I simply love my city.. For the last 10 years I'm also Expat in Switzerland.. near Lausanne.. Switzerland it's a lovely country but very expensive.. here I need minimum 3000 euros per person!! Best regards.. Great work..

Please stop promoting Portugal internationally as an ideal place to buy homes🇵🇹 as it is negatively affecting my people. There is a direct link with the Airbnb, Golden Visas and Digital Nomads and the prices of homes all over Portugal. Proof of it is the fact that even the Portuguese government pretended to fix it with a new bill that they passed last July called “home for all” which still favours Golden Visas and Digital Nomads holders over their native Portuguese. Portuguese are now starting to see rich foreigners who are buying our homes on the international house market as the source of the rising houses and rental prices. How can we compete with rich foreign who are buying our homes with our minimum salaries of €760 a month?!!!! The sad reality that Golden visa holders know that they benefit of free movement all over Europe when they buy a Portuguese home above a certain price, so the house prices were forcefully inflated to accommodate the value that guarantee them the status of Golden visa. Furthermore, as they all automatically get a Portuguese passport after 5years , which grants them free access to many countries without any commitment, really. They only have to stay 7days in the country a year to apply for a Golden visa, but they are allowed to affect the house market, our life style and our power of acquisition permanently. We live in a country with portuguese salaries, but our houses are on an international market, that is problem. In addition to this, our elderly people were forced out of their rental properties in the historic centres of cities such us Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Faro, Coimbra , Braga, Funchal, Ponta Delgada,Setubal, etc. This has killed our heritage, culture and social fabric to accommodate a superficial postcard tourism that has nothing to do with us Portuguese.

I have enough 1200 euros per month for everything, including a nice 2 bedroom apartment. I moved to Portugal from Russia and live in a town near Porto. The main thing to keep in mind is that it is very difficult to find a job here, so Portugal is ideal for those who work remotely. I stream on Twitch and make videos on RUclips. I've spent a lot of time in Portugal and you are right, Portugal is beautiful. My general impression is it's more expensive than what I saw in this video. People are extremely friendly and highly educated. Most people, especially young people, are educated and can carry an intelligent conversation about what's happening throughout the world. Most speak at least three languages, Portuguese, Spanish and English. Beuatiful Country and people. The Country I would move to if I was to relocate anywhere! Porto would be my City. Beautiful river running through the City.

As a Portuguese I’m very happy to see such a positive video about my country. I agree with almost everything you said. Ericeira is also my favorite spot. But as a someone who studied 5 years in Coimbra, I can tell you that 5000€ is HUGE amount of money for any Portuguese in almost any city. To give some perspective: minimum wage is around 600€. You can very easily live with 1200/1500€ per month in Coimbra and have a quite comfortable life. Other than that, very accurate video! Congratulations 👌🏻

I live in Nazaré, it's my birthplace. This beautiful beach, is different from all the beaches in Portugal, for the costumes of the fishermen's women with seven skirts and for the surf of giant waves. It is only 1.15h from Lisbon.

@@Cmcg5454 It'll obviously depend on a multitude of factors (like accommodations, lifestyle, whether you're renting or buying, whether you prefer living in a bigger / more expensive city, in the suburbs of a big city or in less-expensive-to-live-in cities and towns), but it's safe to say it's way less than $5000 / mo for a comfortable life. If it wasn't, then the Portuguese people themselves (like I said in my previous comment) couldn't afford to live in their own country.

Spent 3 months in the Algarve in 2019-2020 just before the pandemic hit. Absolutely marvelous and stunning. Having traveled a lot throughout Europe, Central America and South America, this was absolutely the best of the bunch. Definitely considering retiring there.

I Lived in Lisbon 7 years, it’s a beautiful city, lots of history, monuments, night life, beaches, and much more. Lisbon has it all, but it can get very busy and crowded, the traffic can be a nightmare. In addition to the 10 best places noted in this video, also consider Figueira da Foz near Coimbra, and Angra do Heroismo, the capital of Terceira island in Azores. I could go on, and on. I live in the US and can’t wait to retire to go to Portugal and explore more places, and possibly move to.

@@ghassanjenainaty4212 Yes, there are quite a few mountains in Portugal, if you like winter sports, skying or snow boarding Covilha city located in the Serra Da Estrela national park is a good city to live in.
The Serra do Gerez national park, up north on the border with Spain is also a beautiful mountain resort, the Braga city nearby is a wonderful city to live in.
Located in the center of Portugal near the historic city of Coimbra there is the Bussaco mountain with its 17th century Bussaco monastery and beautiful gardens, and more to the south near Setubal city, there is the Arrabida mountain and the Sado Estuary.
There are more mountain chains and National parks in Portugal, from north to south, but you get the point.
The climate in Portugal is a Mediterranean type of climate, not too hot nor too cold, the more south you go the hotter it gets in the summer, and you can refresh yourself on the numerous beaches along the Portuguese coast.
If you go to the north of Portugal there is more rain in the winter and it can get a little chilly with the windshield factor getting close or bellow to 0 degree celsius on certain days.
One of the main priorities of Portugal is to maintain and preserve the environment, its history and culture. Portugal is one of the leading European countries in electric power generation from renewal sources of energy, specially hydro electric and wind power.

This video is old, but I have looked on Idealista for properties in Figueira da Foz, which seems a great compromise to being really laid back beach living, but not too far away from Lisbon and Puerto. That said, I will probably end up in Spain which I'm way more familiar with.

I've looked at Portugal and reviewed various towns and areas. Don't want to be on the Algarve, too touristy, and I don't need to be close to a beach. Lisbon is too populated, but would want a historic town, I found Elvas, which is a very much overlooked UNESCO town in far eastern Portugal, which has everything I'm looking for and lower costs than other areas.
I thought your choice was interesting. I have been living in Portugal for thirty years and I too chose a small city to live in--Chaves, way up in the north. We of course didn't choose Chaves to retire in but to start a business so our situation was different. Elvas would be an "out of the box" choice because of its distance from all the tourist places and its proximity to a large Spanish city like Badajoz. We visited many years ago but I was planning to go back once the pandemic allows us to travel freely again. I wanted to go during the Easter holidays but we cannot leave our municipality. Perhaps in June. Remember that in Elvas almost no one speaks English and you wouldn't be able to find many expats with whom to socialize once in a while. This is the "problem" we have in Chaves. Chaves of course is much larger than Elvas and has several hipermarkets, a variety of international restaurants (two sushi restaurants) and even a McDonald's and Burger King. Elvas is more rural but you do have Badajoz only a few kilometers away. I hope you like hot summers because Elvas is very hot. Badajoz in fact has some of the highest temperatures in Spain during the summer.
I agree; if you're looking for a slow pace of life and low cost of living, there are many small towns that would be a better fit than the cities and tourist destinations

we have been living in Portugal for a while, and speak the language fairly well. We decided it's time to move out of Portugal. Cost of living in opposite of what people think is high. A very, very simple lifestyle will be approx. 2,000/month. Some of you guys might think this is ok. Compared to what ? keep in mind apt. are old, small, and of low quality. An old , small, ran down apt. will cost around 700-900 Euro/month. If you would like to live in a nice areas in Lisbon or Cascais the same apt. will cost you approx. 1,200/month. And is still old and small. Wanna do a business ? Good luck dealing with license , permission etc.
I personally think a major correction is due in Portugal. It's all over-hyped and the PR agencies hired to promote Portugal are doing a great job attracting people to move to Portugal. 10.5 million Portuguese are paying the price for it. High cost of living, for a country that is considered as one of the poorest in EU. PR team is emphasizing the safety of Portugal....yes important but guess what EU countries in general are very safe.

Yeah I’m from Coimbra. And I’m quite confused with that. I mean I guess if you pay rent for 3 or 4 apartments in different Parts of the city, if you eat caviar everyday, if you buy a 50” TV every month, and other ridiculous luxuries, I can see 5k a month. But why? If you live in Coimbra and you spending even half of that monthly; you doing a lot of things wrong.

Western part (windy side as the Portuguese say) is defo the nicest in terms of natural beauty and much less densely populated. Ericeira is beautiful and has a lot going for it. Prices in terms of real estate is up though - due high demand and less supply. Awesome place. Consider also Nazare as an alternative - though not nearly as expat exposed yet!
Go visit Chaves!!!! Most beautiful city I've ever been and the nightlife is fire. Plus if you go up the mountains a bit, free mushrooms and all drugs are legal

Ponta Delgada: Beautiful, but super rainy (& windy) at times. Nature-lovers paradise. Another bonus for US-based nomads are cheap, direct flights to Boston (due to a large Azorean expat population in the Cape Cod area) on Iberia's budget airline LEVEL, only 4 hours flight and quite inexpensive! From Boston you can get to almost anywhere in the US on Spirit and Jet Blue. Recommend, though personally I enjoyed Madeira more (bit more lively, warmer climate).

I live with my family in the Algarve, on a farm near Silves, the old inland capital of the region. Wonderful people, friendly and warm, with great spoken English everywhere. The coast gets busy in the summer, but not inland. Food and fuel not that cheap, but the farmers' markets are great value. We lived in Spain for a year before moving here, but we much prefer Portugal for so many reasons.

@@karelmuller6716 Spain is more oppressive, much more, with the Guardia Civil acting like mobsters, ghastly. Portugal is freer, more relaxed, warmer people, and closer to nature. Low touch police. And the Portuguese are far less nationalistic, and far more international in mindset, in the South especially. Spoken English is also much better in Portugal, everywhere.

Spot on about Sintra's climate. Took a train there in June from Lisbon, the blazing morning sun suddenly stopped after the train pulled out of the penultimate station and a dense fog fell. Still a wonderful place, and grateful for the cool when walking up to the Castelo dos Mouros, and we couldn't even see the ghastly but striking Palacio de Pena.

Great video as always Kristin! Coimbra, Porto, and the Algarve are all spectacular. I would add Aveiro, which is about 40 mins south of Porto. It’s known as the “Venice of Portugal” for its canals, and amazing seafood. Évora, in the Alentejo, is another underrated gem. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site for its Roman Ruins and cathedral, plus has some of the best food in Portugal in my opinion. Can’t wait to explore that country again!

I am a big fan of Aveiro perhaps because I have been so many times due to one of my granddaughters studying at the university there. In Aveiro you get a big city feeling with a lot of traffic and hustle and bustle. There are great beaches nearby, really not in Aviero but in Ílhavo, and you have a ferry taking you over to the peninsula of São Jacinoto. One problem I see with the city is that rent would be high due to the many university students taking almost all the apartments.

Dont know where you got the idea that it costs 5k usd /month to live in Coimbra. Lived there for over 8 years and it was cheap as it comes. With 850€ i was having the blast of life.

We have been here for 5 months and recently purchased a ruin to renovate. This is a good introduction for Portugal, the countryside has so much to offer as well and always have great cities within a couple of hours or less for weekend breaks! Which, may be a good option for digital nomads as well :)

Coimbra district have many smaller towns where the cost of living is a fraction of the big cities, maybe with a bit less conveniences, but with other little things to enjoy in return. I also like the fact, life is slow and relaxed in that area, and within 20min you can either be in Coimbra centre or at the beach looking at the Atlantic.

I knew Ericeira would be #1 since its the surfing capital of Europe. Only place I liked that you didn't mention is Caldas da Rainha. Guimarães is also good if you like medieval history and the best burger in portugal . Its a little hotter since its closer to the interior of the country and you have to drive 45 mins to the ocean.

You forgot to mention AVEIRO. This region includes villages such as Murtosa, Torreira, Bestida and Sao Jacinto which are some of the most beautiful regions of northern Portugal. I know because I have been there and highly recommend it.

One thing on my list for the ideal location, is a place where people don't say rr like they're trying to get something unstuck in their mouth, and often this seems to be an advantage of the northern interior that might compensate for the colder winters.

I also had the same reaction as you did. Few people in Coimbra have 5000 dollars a month to spend. Coimbra is not considered by Portuguese to be an expensive city. What we have to look at is rent in different places. Everything else (groceries, utilities, transport, restaurants) is about the same. Lisbon is definitely the most expensive place to live in due to high rent. Maybe Porto would be second, and then Braga and Coimbra. If you really wanted to save on rent, you could live in Viseu, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Figueira da Foz, or maybe Leiria. I live in Chaves, where there are no expats, and I am used to it. It's not for everyone though.

My mother is from Malta, and I love that it will cost less than $400 per person to fly there, to see my family, from Portugal. Bloggers often post top reasons to travel (or even move/retire) and things to do and see in Portugal…sounding a lot like promoting tourism for profit. Rarely do bloggers talk about the other (ugly) side and things that you would consider avoiding. Posting both the pros and cons from views of the locals, tourists and expats is the right thing to do…how do locals feel about tourists and expats and how do tourists and expats feel about the locals.
Im from Coimbra born and raised, cost of living is much cheaper than that (but I think that was already mentioned).. lived in Alcântara for a year and would recommend it to everyone, rent is a bit pricier but it's much closer to all the bars, LX factory, clubs, everything!

We live in Cascais, its gorgeous and chill but super easy to get to city center Lisbon if you want. A bit pricey but if you’re not in the center of town you can still find some reasonable flats!

We visited Lisbon, Porto, Ericeira, Douro Valley and stopped briefly in a couple other spots, too briefly to have an opinion. Each City has a wildly different vibe. What surprised me the most was the terrain. Walking Lisbon and Porto is a workout. The sidewalks and streets, in most touristy areas in Lisbon and Porto (except next to water), were super unfriendly to wheelchairs and people who would have trouble with steps, hills and uneven surfaces. We loved it and will go back soon, however those who have issues with physical disabilities need to be aware.

On average (for 2 pax), monthly bills like Electricity & Gas (80EUR), Water (25EUR), TV phone & internet (30EUR), groceries (250EUR), health insurance (80EUR), public transportation (80EUR) will be mostly the same in all cities. The big variations can be on apartment rentals and entertainment spending. Rents in Portugal average at 600EUR (for a one bedroom apartment), but cities like Lisbon and Porto will be 20-30% higher. So i guess we can say that the cost of living for Portugal averages at 1300 EUR (2 pax) and you will need to add 20-30% for the 'big' cities of Lisbon, Porto, Braga & Coimbra. Check out ine.pt or pordata.pt websites, they have pretty good data on this and many other subjects.

Please go live anywhere besides Lisbon, Porto and Algarve. Locals are being forced out of those places because expats and tourist are making the prices skyrocket.
Also, it can’t be true that the cost of living in Coimbra reaches 5000$ since less than 1% of the portuguese earn that kind of money. And Coimbra is cheaper than Lisbon and Porto.

Totally agree. I’ve lived in Cascais/Estoril for over 20 years, but since Lisbon became “cool” it’s been swamped with tourists. Now often difficult to get into my favourite restaurants. And when the Web Summit is in town, it’s horrendous.

We been living in Cabanas by Tavira in the Algarve but are currently on Madeira investigating purchasing a home here. We love hiking, mountain biking, paragliding so Madeira is perfect for us. Plus the annual temperature range is ideal for the central California transplant.

What's special about traveling around Portugal is that there are so MANY great cities, and relatively close together. Viana do Castelo, Guimaraes, Amarante, Lamego, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Marvão, Elvas, Estramoz, Evora, Beja... Just too many to mention.

Luis Santos is correct.. the most expensive city in Portugal is Lisbon and you were expat there.. Coimbra is expensive because of the Universty students. (One of the most ancient Universities that still existing 1290 B.C) . but 5000 euros it's not correct.. should be like Lisbon maximum.. I'm from Oporto and I have a house in Vila Nova de Gaia (the city in the other side of the River Douro).. 17 km of beachs.. I simply love my city.. For the last 10 years I'm also Expat in Switzerland.. near Lausanne.. Switzerland it's a lovely country but very expensive.. here I need minimum 3000 euros per person!! Best regards.. Great work..
