One tip I have for pumping away from your baby(like at work) is to look at pictures of your baby, or videos of them. It helps you to have that bonding feeling and thereby helping your milk let down and express better. I remember that helped me with my first baby a lot.

This info is so helpful!! Another tip I have for those who are pumping (I’m not sure if it was mentioned) is if it gets frustrating or seems like you’re full but nothing is coming out with the pump.. hand expressing is really helpful too!! Of course it’s hard to do that for a long period of time, but if you need to get a bit more out that the pump isn’t getting, it works great

I’m 23 and just moved back to America from living in Asia. Just had my babygirl at home. Didn’t know I would be returning to the States, but we were forced to due to Covid-19. I was preparing to have my child in Asia. I watched so many of your videos as I prepared overseas- wishing I could have a homebirth. We lived in rural Cambodia and were 9 hours from the nearest hospital, so a homebirth was out of the question. Upon returning to America, I decided I wanted a homebirth and was able to have a beautiful, complication free birth at home. Your videos have been so helpful to me as I was overseas and also post partum! Thank you Bridget!

Mommas! In the hospital my nurse and I used the Medela pump. It had ALOT of parts. I walked away with a kitchen size trash bag of parts they gave me. Target did not have the Medela, so my husband got the EVENFLO just for me to look at since I had my mind made up to get the Medela. When he got home, I had to use it because I was so engorged and needed a release. Needless to say, I’ve never looked back. It is the EASIEST pump, the parts are so simple and to clean after each session only takes < 1 minute. I easily take it room to room and even have used it in the car. I would highly recommend, especially for new mothers. We need simplicity!

Question: I already have a Hakaa, but no electric pump yet. What about combining the Hakaa and a Medela Swing Flex (only on one side)? You really nailed it for me at the end of your video (everything else was great info too!!). I needed to hear this. Been having issues with breastfeeding (my 2 week old first child) and been pumping and supplementing with formula to feed him (only had a handful successful breast feeds - thankfully have an appt with a lactation consultant soon). But I have been focusing on the pumping output number so much always checking if my supply increased from one day to the next. Currently just expressing about 1 Oz max per session. Great pumping tips, I have to implement them.

Great video and I completely agree with your recommendation about using the Haakaa early on and how and when to use the electric pump. I just wanted to add that the hospital grade pumps aren't necessarily stronger than the single user pumps. But they're designed to be used by many different people (cleaning in between) and have dual motors and programs with pre-settings to help stimulate production. Those are available for rent if mom and baby are separated or baby is unable to latch for medical reasons.

Hi Bridget! Thanks for a very informative video. I was frustrated about the amount of milk I always get in each pumping session as I thought it was equivalent to what my son gets. Thanks for clarifying that they are not the same. And as for the haakaa, I've been using that as well and they are indeed do amazing job

  • @lemongrove57

So excited to try the haakaa this time around. I'm hoping it makes some kind of difference. I always end up supplementing since my milk takes forever to come in, I have horrible success with all the pumps I've tried, and hate being stuck in a chair attached to something all the time. My brain is really dark and slow for at least the first few months, and it's a terrible time for problem solving all this. I do try to make up for it with a good goat milk formula and at least 18 months of breastfeeding. I'll probably also break out the old Medela and see if any of these tips help.

If I have one of those milk bags to freeze but I only get a little bit of milk at a time, how long can I wait in order to collect more milk in the same bag before storing it away in the freezer?

I’m glad i found this video. I tried using the hacka and it didn’t work well for me. My son will be 8 weeks on Saturday. He’s stil eating every two hours or less. So far I’ve been exclusively breast feeding. But i want to start pumping to get ready to go back to work in a month and so i can do some mommy things. I hope i Didn’t start too late because you mentioned that 6 weeks is a good time to start pumping.

I’m a ftm and exclusively breastfeeding but trying to get some pump sessions in for when I go back to work or grandparents watch baby etc. and I’m having a hard time figuring out my flange size. I have the spectra s1 and when I measured via their tape thing online, it said 24 mm but I feel like my nipples swell when I pump. How do I make sure I have the right size when my nipples swell?
Thanks for all your amazing advice

Watching this video was incredibly helpful, and overwhelming at the same time. I’m pregnant with my third and last one. I want to pump and breast feed. I was unable to successfully breastfeed with my other two and wasn’t fully aware of pumping. No one said I could do that. I do work full time, currently from home but I want to be as successful in this journey as possible. I will have to have a little note on the refrigerator to remind me of the time to use the milk 😕
