I walk for one hour, various small hills, with a 30# pack on, M-Thur after work.

Been walking 6000 steps a day (sedentary job so it's hard to force yourself), and my back has never felt better !

I made the decision to walk, instead of driving, to the grocery store a few years ago. Mostly, it was about decreasing my footprint and being responsible. Over the course of the last few months, I've noticed my motivation has changed. Walking is my goto starting point when the demons prevail. No idea if it's bloodflow, or oxygen or environment, whatever. My brain just works better, stops screaming, shit makes more sense. Also, it really does feel like I'm getting something important done. It's a completely selfish activity that doesn't feel that way. Walking, for me, has the greatest cost/benefit outcome of anything I've ever tried for mental health. Peace :)

I inherited a tiny 10 lb mini-dachshund from my grandmother, who is in memory care. I live a mile from work. Ever since having her, I've mostly walked to work. The old girl gets a mile there, and a mile back. She's a trooper. In the heat, we go slow. In the cold, she sometimes gets a bike ride back (I own too many bicycles). It's my favorite reason for living so close to work. The walks have turned into meandering adventures. Every season in my state has it's own distinct feeling, (4 full seasons). Lots of podcast listing, but sometimes, like in the late spring, early summer, I'm just listening to the birds. I have my "Merlin" bird identification app on my home screen! I practice patience, kindness, and also avoiding eye contact with most people on my walk. I have generalized anxiety. Having this dog, and my walk through the busiest area of town, has helped immensely with my anxiety. Everybody should walk more often, and everybody should try and get to a point of making more kind eye contact with strangers. We (they) aren't so scary ;) .

Wow, that was well said! I was always pro-walking, but I guess I just needed to rediscover it in the context of creativity and overall mood. It’s kind of weird how valuable something like waking is, and on so many levels!

I heard that cycling is also a healthy alternative.

I've done a lot of walking because I don't drive! I don't think it does much. I walk probably 3 hours or so every day, and my health is ok for my age but nothing special. But there are different ways of walking. Some are better exercise than others. Going fast is good exercise. I don't think a slow walk really does very much of anything at all.

@tesseractgon-dy5yo Well, are you walking fast? As I mentioned if you go at a good clip it could be exercise. But just meandering isn't.

Yeah, and walking on natural surfaces with uneven terrain is next-level

@@dylanboye I haven't spent time walking in the bush daily since I was a kid. That's definitely different than pavement walking. Also, besides speed .... weight. Carrying weight will definitely make it exercise.

I’ve only been bald for a little while, but so far my impression is that I get just as much attention, if not more, than when I had hair…
