    Classic cars are cool, but there's just something different about an old classic pickup. I don't know if it's just a different mindset or what it is, but an old classic pickup is just a different creature all together. I love them. I've got an old 66 GMC 1000 with the long-box fleetside. Also has the fuel tank behind the seat, going to change that sometime, and the old 4 speed with the reverse to the left and down. I'd like to change it to a 5 speed. It is the first year for the 4.1L 250ci inline 6 engine, and that thing has some serious low end. It will pretty much throw you back in the seat when you get on it, so I know it will handle a 5 speed. The throw-out bering is out right now too, so I'm not driving it, but am more than ready to get back to working on it.

    Love that truck, good call replacing everything while you had access. That clutch had seen better days and the hub rivets were loose. I used to build Hays clutches at Mr. Gasket and all the surfaces would need grinding and a new hub installed provided the disc was still good. Keep them videos coming!

    Like most vehicles sent to the junkyard, she is very used. But still running and driving.
    I had a 1975 Chevy step side that I drove onto the scales at the local wreckers.
    Floor pans and rocker panels were gone. At the time it wasn't worth repairing. Now it'd fetch 20x what I paid for it.

  • @Thrawnization
    @Thrawnization 5 лет назад +4

    Chrysler A230, decent all synchro three speed. Not sure if they used a straighter cut gear for 1st and 2nd in the trucks to improve strength, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case. Considering the shape the rest of the truck is in I doubt the gears are all that worn. Sloppy shifts is typically due to the shift linkage setup, plus the linkage tends to wear out pretty quickly. Find a good Hurst shifter for it and that'll clear it up.

      "Rust belt" refers to a relatively small area of the US which has or had a prominent steel industry. It doesn't have anything to do with a climate that's conducive to rust. For example, my home state of Maine isn't in the rust belt, but vehicles here rust out as bad or worse than any other part of the country.

    It is my personal experience that Dodge is the easiest truck to work on. My biggest thrill was converting a 1963 two wheel drive Town Wagon to four wheel drive. six bolts took off the front clip.

    I'm originally from a small town in Alabama, and my first (late) wife was from TN. My little town had some woods near the town dump. People brought unwanted old cars there and parked them with the keys in. Probably 10 acres of running cars, free for the taking. My uncle Lefty took me with him when someone in our family needed a car. I was a tweener, and my job was climbing down in ditches and seeing if the car was still there. If so, he drove it out and my Grandfather drove it home where it would be cleaned and serviced. Most of the old maid Aunts and Great Aunts in my family drove cars from those woods. Few people believe me when I tell them the cars we had when I was a kid in 60s and 70s.

    Nice job on Rump! And it's good to hear you're going back to the Charger - this isn't a critique, because trying to decide which vehicle to work on/video next is a problem I'd like to have. I have a suggestion for Rump's wheel/tire combo: maybe a set of Cragar SS wheels wrapped w/white letter tires (Cooper Cobras or Goodyear STs come to mind).

My dad had a 1992 Ram which had 4 speeds, but the 1st was very high, this in order to be able to move weight, but with no weight on, you would normally take off at 2nd, pretty much like you were shifting your truck in this video. Reverse was on the top right side of the shift pattern.

    I did like your "how to" video but one important thing you could of added. You may know but most kids won't and that is check all the fluids for how full and how to see where it is going... another thing is, clean brake adjusters and use never seize on them so they will adjust later when you need to. Over all, four out of five star show cause it's important to get people started right. You live on the back roads but others may not so clean the mirrors and glass as an accident takes all the fun out of it.
