this made me realize how much i love hesitation marks's sound design, it was really a turning point for NIN's sound and a weensy part of me kinda wishes that they stuck to this? but they evolved into something more goregous with the new ghosts
If you listen to the sorta, podcast, Trent did where he revealed this he mentions it not really fitting the theme, or story of the album. Along with a few others. Good track on it's own but he was thinking of the bigger picture in regards to the whole album as a piece of art itself.
These demos don’t have names and that’s killing me. They may have not been completely finished, and presumably have/had a working title, but I’d like to name them if nothing else for myself. But I figure I’d post my thoughts here. So here’s part 1... I’ve nicknamed this one “Message To No One.” Even the most hardcore NIN fans may not realize that this was already a name selected for another song, but one that was never finished by NIN. However, I believe that the name has finally found a face, as it were, and that face is this track. At nearly seven minutes long, this track never for once drags on or becomes dull to the listener. It’s a quiet, mesmerizing message that’s meant to be screamed out, but instead is peacefully brought forth - and it works perfectly. In the end, we all have a message that we’d like to say to others, and we may realize that they won’t listen, especially not If you are saying it quite loudly. So instead, one may think aloud to themselves. But when you’re thinking, you’re not speaking; so the “message” for this title works perfectly for an ambient track. There are bits in this track where it appears the “message” wants to come out, but won't, or can't. The build up from 4:46 to 4:52 seems to indicate that the person wishes to speak up, but in the end chooses not to because no one is there to hear. And they may choose not to because in the end… it is a message… to. no. one. But the best part of this track for it to fit the name I’ve chosen? The very last second. 6:55. You catch Trent taking a breath of air in… as if it were… a sigh. A sigh that he realizes that no one is listening. That his message IS to no one, and he (as in the idea of inside the song itself, mind you) finally understands that. Now, of course, it is simply a breath to catch back with the “In Conversation With…” recording that just happened to be edited into this RUclips video. But it works wonders. It ends the track magnificently, if, and only if, I can claim it under the name “Message To No One.” And it'll be on my ipod as such. I hope you enjoyed this, and I thank you for reading through it and encourage you to check out the other two as well. - JT
John Taylor I know this is 3 years old but man you have a great imagination and you obviously had shit tons of fun and thought with this . I like all 3 track names.
Glad I listened to the bonus material and found this on my own... happy to find out someone took the time to put it in a video so I can share it with my lazy friends.
Took me a while, but I've really grown to like it. The whole album imho, whilst not up there with their best work, is great. A new era for Trent, for sure.
You know that name really does fit it. Now that you do mention it, it does seem like there is a "message" somewhere in this bit no one there to see it. I'm gonna starting calling it this as well
I was going to say "his", but considering all the session musicians he's had involved over the years, as well as his long-term production collaboration with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder, I decided "their" was more appropriate. Trent has never written and produced all the music himself. It's a matter of opinion, I suppose.

Add Violence comes pretty close
i can only imagine if this had actually been in hesitation marks with vocals, would've been fucking sick
I think there is no need in vocal
Seriously.... these demos are even better than some tracks in the album. I am not sure why these were not included in the deluxe version... pity:(

This would have been so great before Satellite

epic, i wish the rest of Hesitation Marks was like this...
Terrific track
This is like the Quake soundtrack
Why the-fuck don't they appreciate Trent Reznors epic music anymore?

It technically was included in the Deluxe version, since these are found on the track "Trent Reznor In Conversation With..."
More like this, Trent! Sound great on my JH Audio Roxanne Custom IEM's. 😉
I'm mean the Quake soundtrack was made by trent reznor
It all comes from his head.
Absolutely Awesome
this is sooooo good
Yeah. I can understand why these weren't included. They're great but definitely fit the space that YEAR Z3RO already occupies... I suppose...

Came here from Fyre documentary
Sounds like this evolved into "The Cursed Clock"
No. Everything is amazing.
Nice song
they are coming demo 1
Fucking Awesome!
Agreed.

Should have replaced disappointed, only song on album i'm meh and skip. Album needed a good instrumental and this would have done nicely me thinks.
Shadow people fight music 🌚🌝
This sounds like Willy wonka
