  • AI is shaping every aspect of our lives - but only a handful of tech giants have a say in what this technology can do. So what's going on with world governments? Bilawal Sidhu, host of "The TED AI Show," sits down with geopolitical expert Ian Bremmer to unpack the UN's just-released plan for "Governing AI for Humanity," a report that focuses on the urgent need to guide AI towards helping everyone thrive, rather than just the powerful few. Together, they explore the complexities of AI's rapid growth on a worldwide scale and take a clear-eyed look at the pivotal decisions facing us in the very near future. (Recorded at The TED AI Show on September 10, 2024 )

Excellent TED AI discussion. I'm a Math teacher in LAUSD. Watch the 1970 movie "Collosus, The Forbin Project" It was the actual scifi thematic basis for the "Terminator" movie series. Collosus explores what happens and what our world could look like when 2 AI super computers that control, without human control, US and USSR nuclear ICBMs. Anyone who understands Linear Algebra can understand the impact of a machine that can "understand" words, pictures, videos, and spoken language that are digitized into simple math matrices. On Nov 30, 2022 when I heard that ChatGPT 3.5 could understand and process human language I understood its both positive and negative impact on worldwide humanity. No expert now explicitly. understands how Large Language Models operates inside its algorithm "Black Box".

What are the implications for individuals?
There was a brief mention of “looking inward”, and the concern of losing humanity, due to “nurture” being replaced by AI and algorithms. But other than that, this whole discussion revolved around governments, corporations, and the UN - and so I feel that it did not adequately address how everyday people are affected, but rather referred to more as statistics.
And thinking this way is a major failing of current monetary, governmental, political, and industrial models. The points mentioned were more “What allows our organizations/partnerships to coexist and cooperate?” rather than “How do we protect the rights and freedoms of real people?”

  • @AlexanderYap

Humanity is screwed. We could barely keep on top of the climate crisis even with decades of warning and response time. AI will develop exponentially faster, we might get from current GPT to AGI and then ASI faster than the UN can organize anything. This will be followed by mass joblessness and societal collapse before any government can react.
Lets admit the truth that humans will become largely obsolete very soon.

The UN is unable to force Israel to comply with dozens of Resolutions against the illegal invasion, occupation and colonization of Palestinian areas. The same can be said about Resolutions on climate change. Human rights violations within the US and the EU or committed in other countries by Europeans and Americans have only one consequence at the UN: sleepy diplomatic discussions that result in nothing, empty speeches that convince no one and demonstrations of diplomatic hypocrisy in favor of impunity for the US and the EU. So it seems clear to me that the UN initiative on global governance of AI is doomed to failure. But there is a scenario in which it could be welcome for those who want to maintain the status quo and be diplomatically successful: diverting the attention of the world public from the permanent institutional failure of the UN by allowing this zombie to continue existing and guaranteeing the jobs and fancy lives of diplomats.
There is something very strange about the Turing Test. When it was first conceived, this test was just a thought experiment carried out by a very capable and creative mathematician in an environment where computers (or thinking machines) did not exist as things widely used by states, small and large corporations and billions of people around the world every day. Obviously the threshold for measuring whether or not a thinking machine can be seen as a human being and deceive its interlocutor is not the same. In fact, it has not been the same for decades. And yet people always refer to the Turing Test as if it could reveal something significant. The question that I believe is relevant is: can we, at the current stage of technological development, really know what characterizes a human being, what a thinking machine consists of and what distinguishes an AI from a human being? It would not make sense for a Bronze Age man to test which would be the most efficient stone axe, because it is self-evident that a bronze axe is more efficient and durable. It also no longer makes sense to imagine that the Turing Test, created in a context where computers had not been a reality for decades, could yield consistent results. Perhaps we are already being herded like cattle by AIs, but we have no way of knowing this because the tools we use to distinguish AIs from humans are inadequate.

The fact that the guy just said the UN is a bureaucratic machine and they move slowly means it’ll take forever to do anything when you keep development in the private sector. The effect of salts in atmospheres has been observable for a over a hundred years and has been used in theatres of combat to increase rainfall in specific targeted areas. The UN is very aware of this yet they do not act to resolve climate in anyway other than to propose a tax on individuals based on use and mitigation of carbon dioxide which is the building block of life. The UN may observe environmental catastrophe and still have means and no will to act in any purpose other than to increase taxation.
