Funny, but all the Apple centric youtube channels think that everybody is a creator, needs the highest end everything, etc. The PC youtubers suffer the same thing, the gamming disease. Apple sells more of the base models of mac mini's, macbook airs. 99.9 percent of their business is towards the rest of us. I'm old now retired, worked in the car business all of my life, even at GM as trainer. The most common thing was people tented to overbuy, like a 15 way power seat, when they only drove it, set it once and never moved it. Apple of course is like any other company, it tries to market to youtube creators, influencers etc, so that you can maybe someday, be like that guy on mac rumors! Those of us that are based in the real world just want something that works, were no going to video edit in 8K in final cut pro etc.

"Most importantly, if you run out of space on your Mac because you have only 256GB of storage it's gonna start eat into your virtual memory."
This is very false. If you run out of space, you're out of space and you will not be able to store anything unless you delete things or add external storage. Virtual memory is when you run out of RAM and your storage is used as much slower RAM.

I’m finally replacing my 2008 and 2009 Mac Pros. I’ve decided on the M2 Pro Mac Mini with: 16GB ram, 12 cores, 19 core gpu, 1T of storage and 10G Ethernet. It’s all overkill for me but then my Mac Pro 4 core was overkill and lasted 14 years. The only reason I’m changing it out is the IOS is vulnerable to attacks because it’s not supported and some websites won’t even work with it. I will miss the 26T of storage on my Mac Pro but I don’t need access to all my videos all of the time. I have NAS drives as I bought them figuring my next Mac wouldn’t have that much internal storage. I was right.

I have a Mac Pro 2008&2009 and they are still going. The problem is Apple stops supporting them and there comes a point where the browser also no longer support the old OS. I'm at that point and lots of websites won't even load up on my computer so I've had to order a new computer. My Mac Pros likely would have kept going for years and still worked fine. I can put 64GB of ram in them even and they are 14 years old! They have 25TB of storage in them and can be updated in numerous ways. Probably why Apple moved away from offering cheaper Mac Pros :(

16 GB RAM is needed even for basic users. 256 GB storage is fine for most users, and iCloud storage is super cheap. A fast usb-c flash drive/stick in addition, and most people will be fine. So be it if transfers are a bit slower. How often do people transfer hundreds of GB? Do not overspec your Apple devices. It costs way to much, and you get less value for money. None of the spec-steps are worth more than 1/3 of what Apple charges for them.

RE: 8GB of RAM on models. This can cause filesystem performance hits. While SSD storage is blazing fast it is still not as fast as RAM. Many applications are written, especially ones that write data out to disk, with the assumption that they can write out as fast as possible and the OS will maintain enough filesystem cache for this to work out pleasantly for everybody. Desktops aren't my thing, but in the database/server world you can reasonably plan on half of your system ram being used for the filesystem cache. 8 GB is pretty paltry considering that Chrome can easily consume 4 GB on its own. No matter what CPU you have, the amount of filesystem cache will ultimately be the bottleneck. I suspect this is why your podcast recording sessions had drop outs - the app delivered the data effectively, but the OS was not able to scribble it down to the disk in time.

It's amazing how fast a $599 computer ($499 with educational pricing) becomes a $1299 computer.
With my 2018 Mac mini, I have to use a significant amount of tricks to make 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage usable for my work - 4K video editing, Web Development, and App Development. This was barely tolerable 4+ years ago. Two generations later, I'm surprised that 8GB RAM / 256 GB Storage is still an option.
Yet, this lets the customer decide what's important to them.

I think you will find that the M1 can do more with less memory than the intel. I have a 16GB Intel and an 8GB M1 and, surprisingly, some things, like running Xcode, run better on the M1. Also @Garrus Vakarian - you do not know what you are talking about. The M2 Pro for $300 more than similarly configured M1 has 50% more performance CPUs (4 to 6), 60% more GPUs (10 to 16) and double the memory bandwidth (100 Gb/s to 200). Time will tell, but I suspect that may be the machine to buy for most Professionals. The additional power in the full on M2 Pro or even the Studio will only be necessary for people paying for “specs”.

Simple, like Rock & Roll, Blues, light Jazz fusion. I use Garage Band and Presonus Studio One as my DAW. Here's the best part, my Mac Mini is a Late 2012, which I upgraded to 16GB Ram, and a 512 SSD, works great! I'd love to have a M2 Pro Base model, but $1299 is a bit heavy. And now we get the M2 and it is supposed to be crazy amazing. But everytime in reviews, it says that the M2 will be good for people with basic needs, the everyday browsing and word docs etc.... I mean, if the M2 is supposed to be a beast already, it should be doing way more than that. I'm not a professional and I like to work of my pictures and videos and doing some basic video editing for myself. And with some reviews it feels that I would need an M2 Pro to be confortable

This is a much tougher choice compared to Macbooks.
When switching from air to pro you get better screen, fans, more ports and more cpu/gpu cores.
On mac mini however, for the same price difference you get only more cpu/gpu cores.
Both have fans, both have nice ports, no screen upgrade of course.

As an owner of an iMac (Core i5, late-2013) and an M1 Mac Mini, both of which were bought from Apple as refurbished models, the idea of both the M2 and M2Pro Mac Mini is quite intriguing. Max Tech did a review of the M2 MacBook Air using pseed test benchmarks several months ago. One of their benchmark tests revealed that the M2 substantially improved the snappyness of basic tasks, such as browser performance. It would be interesting to see if this observation holds up on the newly released Mac Mini models and MacBook Pros.

This didn't help me at all.
Obviously we aren't going to be comparing the m2 with 8gb to the m2 pro...
I wanted to know if I should save some money and get the m2 with 24gb of ram, 512gb of storage vs the m2 pro with 32gb of ram. The only difference is 2 cpu cores and 6 gpu cores and a bit of ram.
Would have been great if you went into more in depth what workloads would benefit most from the extra gpu cores. etc
basically you spent 6 minutes saying nothing...

Works fine, but I've been kindof waiting for this M2 Mini for a possible upgrade. I mainly write using Scrivener and do podcast editing with Descript. How much of a performance improvement could I expect with the M2 Pro Mac Mini (16Gb).

I waited through October like many others I know and of course nothing happened. I literally came within 5 days of just getting a full specked out M1 mini and being satisfied either way. BUT something told me to just hang on if possible. Because there wasn't the usual live online release event, I didn't even know about the new one until I saw RUclipsrs going nuts. Whew, what a bullet dodge because music production requires as much power as one can afford. Sounds like you are still good to go and are not that upset which is commendable. I would have been absolutely crushed as I need the maximum for the studio yet funds are as tight as in recent memory for our family. I am sure folks are going to chime in to Apple about the mode of release and ultra lack of leakage.

The base model of all M2 Macs only has a 256 Gb none upgradable SSD. Not only is this too little but more importantly selecting this configuration will result in a slow system. This is because in all 256 Gb M2 Macs there is only one and not two Flash memory modules soldered onto its motherboard. This halves the rate of data transfer to the SSD by comparison with any entry level M1 Mac. I would like to beg all purchasers of any M2 Mac to pay an extra $200 for a 512 Gb SSD to create a balanced fast system.
