As a prot pally who joined my first raids as ret a few months back to fill a spot I am humbled but both intrigued by this video lmao. My guild is on Bloodsail Buccaneers and we are the farthest thing from Try hard out there. We clear raids pretty regularly with a lot of meme specs. Even got a shadow priest or two.
Honestly Ret didn't start coming together until TBC and in imo peaked in wrath. I'll be real happy if we get tbc or wrath classic servers so I can relive the glory days on my belf pally.
Jeez, when I compare this to my ret back on Legion :D With the set bonus from T20 the rotation was so smooth, there wasn't a second that I couldn't click some spell. And in a lot of raids I topped DPS meter both on single and multiple targets. I played since like 2.3.0 TBC to 7.2.5 Legion. Man what a ride, RET GANG ALWAYS!
It's so sad that ret paladin is my all time favorite even though I'm such an idiot as a player. So it makes things harder for me :( In other hand Paladin tanks should be the best as paladins have devoted spirits and are always in front of the line and ready to sacrifice themselves. That's literally the definition of tank, and yet warrior / druid tanks are everywhere.
I've been playing a pally since Vanilla. Was the first char I ever made actually. I lvl'd threw the first 3 expansions as holy even. From Cataclysm to current day I've been retribution tho and only occasionally switch to holy. Idc what anyone says about Ret, it's a fun class to play, especially with all the utility they bring. I've prevented countless wipes with last second LoH on the tanks, or saved so many random dps from getting lit up by dropping a BoP on em. RET GANG !
Bro, best thing ever is when Ret Paladin strike that bursting auto-attack that takes off 98% of the target life, and then we just casually finishes with Judgement. Damn man, I wished Paladins had WoW Vanilla Beta Holy Strike and Crusader Strike. No joke that I don't play WoW Vanilla in the original servers and only on private servers.
It's very weird. I think the idea with Paladin is that they're supposed to be stuck on the boss auto-attacking away while offhealing and buffing. but then people realized FoL is way to effecient of a heal and like...yeah, all their paladin sets are very hybridy in nature minus maybe t3 so they clearly had an idea in mind but the players took it and ruined it.
Kevin Jordan did say recently this year on his stream that there were 3 core designs that make the vanilla paladin, a paladin. 1) no mobility changing spells (like sprint or blink) 2) no consistent burst except against undead and 3) GCD usage on things other than DPS. Those 3 items combined should have resulted in a reactive supportive DPS healer class. But there was still a issue and it isn't what players think. The main issue with rets, was mostly related to auras/blessings on the paladin as a whole. They were not attractive enough to use reactively and after greater blessings were added to the game to make raid players have an easier time casting blessings, it made bringing a ret completely useless from a supportive standpoint. Reason rets are so much better aligned to their class fantasy in pvp is because of 2 things 1) you use more of your 30s duration blessings which in turn forces you to adjust blessings reactively and 2) you actually can heal and use your GCD's on things like cleanses/blessings. In the end the vanilla paladin is also the most closest to it's original identity, like vanilla reckoning is super unique to the paladin's identity; who else can turn a bunch of crits into an auto delete burst? But in order to fully unlock paladin you'd have to redesign the blessings so they stop being a raid wide passive buff mechanic because it goes against the paladins' tactical reactive nature (make them more group based and look to sacrifice/freedom as the perfect example of blessings), offer more compelling auras to use in different situations, and stop giving players quality of life changes just because they demand it (you gotta parent us or we will figure out fast ways to break shit lol).
Yeah, it's totally the players' fault for accidentally realizing paladins are best at healing and can't compete in DPS because Blizzard expects them to heal while being a DPS.
It's 2024, I'm playing ret Paladin on classic. I have Bonereaver's Edge sword, and I only play pvp, full pvp. Paladin's ret is so powerful now even after the recent nerf, before he could kill anyone with one hit, now he is still powerful. All you need to be powerful, good weapon, 25% crit, 3% haste, pvp gear, good profession. Fuck pve, you only need that for weapons. Pvp equipment is the strongest for pvp, there is no pve that is stronger tested, whoever thinks that pve is stronger than pvp can only dream. He's a boring paladin when you level him up and while you don't have equipment he's weak, but after that, you fuck everything in order on the server from 2 hits! And there are so many spells that he can survive with, 5 of them beat me, I always survive... he has a heal, he has a shield, he has another shield, he has Lay of Hand, he has 100 spells to fuck you in the brain! Long live Paladin and Bonereaver's Edge!!!
you know, the paladin is wrong in wow classic. bis pvp paladin in original wow classic was doing very high dps. i remember in 2005 on youtube there was a video where ret grand marshal paladin was doing more dps than a full geared healer was able to heal. he was doing crits arond 2.5k with spells and melee... i was looking for that video for long time but i could not find it :( it was not a video from private server because a year after vanilla released there was no private servers yet...
And i was wondering why my paladin with really good equip dont do half the damage others do. And nice to see that i was leveling like a mad man for nothing -.- like he said in the video, in the lore paladins are OP. So i have to wait until they bring out lichking for the death knight. Thank you blizzard for nothing
Paladins were suppose to have a crusader strike spell in classic. They didn’t release it with it unfortunately because they wanted to try going a different damage route. To bad the damage output was shit... I still like playing Ret though. It’s somehow fun even though it’s boring.
Index did have a thought on your last vid on damage meters. Possible idea for lols would be change the name of the top dps to your own name at the end of the video (custom in details)
The developers back in the day intentionally weakened Rets and hybrids because they didn't want them to be too strong, they took out the crusader strike, (kinda like in BC) in alpha/beta due to these reasons. A good Ret always shined more in group pvp than PvE, problem is that there's not a lot of good ret paladins, or ones with gear, less with both, then there's not a lot of players who are even willing to try a Ret paladin, because they nerd out on trying to 'meta win' with premades/groups. To be fair to the critics, retribution can be good in some situations in group pvp, but it's rarely the best pick, usually there's something better..
the class has so much Fantasy . I don't understand why they pushed it toward healer class while its a *holy knights* class. warrior of light ain't nurses to make them healers blizzard , and even if, this should be their part time job not main as protection or retribution.
Have my like, o' nobble holy paladin that seeks retribution, for that Hillary meme made me REPENT! We do not want to end up like some of her former political opponents in an "accidental" car crash.
Ret plaladin is actually pretty damn good to team up with a warrior since you got so much utillity to support. And even as deep ret i can heal every now and then if needed. you got 2 stuns to interrupt and if someone comes close or the warrior struggles you can jump in and burst pretty hard. So a Ret is pretty useful if you play it right. most Rets just cant get rid fo their ego and play as a team :D So if played right(eousness) you can be really effective in PvP and PvE since you can help a hand on healser by dispell between attacks and an additional LoH is aslways welcome and can save a wipe .. rets just been trash talked down by min max dudes that cant tell the difference between versatile/vauluble and optimal. id rather have a Ret in a 40 men than a rouge due to one ret be able to buff and support 40 .. but they dont look at that .. just at pure dps stats :D
Unbuffed with the best gear you get about 300 DPS full buffed you normally get somthing between 500-700 DPS depends on how fast your raid kills the boss! And If you play ret you should at least get the rank 13 set or do rank 14 it's easier now since the most caps are under 500k honor now (I reached rank 13 in February/April and stopped in hoes of getting hand of rag still haven't got it ;] AFTER 50+ Id's xD) if you want an half MoM then you should do rank 14 if you either do r13 or 14 just so you can show the other dps how big your schlong is by actually working for your gear ;]
You should try out prot paladin tanking! They're actually viable raid tanks and lots of fun to play if you put in the effort. Just be prepared to carry 2k+ Symbols of Kings 24/7 :') Check out my wowhead guide for it if you want a quick rundown.
Sorry bro not viable not even close. Debuff slots alone don't allow it and no taunt either. Playing ret or prot paladin in classic is the same as having a chance to start all over and God asking you what you want to be this time around and then you go and say "janitor".
Ret can be decent dps if played properly (and having consumes XD). Problem is: - a lot of Ret-players a re shit - and metaboos have taken over classic at this point P.S.: Paladins have buffs and utility as well. Rogues for example have nothing for the raid except their DPS, noone would bring them if that was dogshit)
@Brian barely decent depends on your view. A ret can pull his own weight if done correctly. And honestly, you can make any spec viable in a raid if you want to invest the time to learn how. Sure, being flexible is a good bonus point, but if a ret needs to go holy then you ever have to few healers or they are shit (at least in pve, pvp ofc heal when needed)
My guilds ret pally got Ashkandi last night and started clapping everyone in duels. Hopped on my pve spec shadow priest and had to show him up. 3-0. XD

I play on horde and i can tell you enhancement shaman are actually the worst they have the worst dps and have mana problems. Ret is not the worst because spell power ret is a thing.
You know the real problem is that people organize in this game like mass production, everyone has to do exactly one part. Be tank. Be healer. Be huge damage. It's bullshit. The talent trees are made for being anything in between. A ret paladin maybe isn't the best dps, but he is there to make others shine. With buffs and with helping with healing when it gets rough and with tanking when it is needed or a tank dies. Paladin is a hybrid class. He shouldn't do as much damage as a rogue or warrior. That's not his job. His job is to be useful in situations where it is needed, utility, and to make others stronger. I just hate how exactly the players made the game a place where you have to just be one of 3 roles and that's it. This is a game. We want to have fun, not be the best of the best. And then cry after two weeks for new content. It's very sad to see that the classic experience was killed instantly back in 2019.
The problem with Ret is that Classic is unbalanced old hot garbage and the best version of WoW was Wrath of The Lich King WoW, but no one wants to mention that.
ShadeOfEclipse honestly classic PvP is pretty balanced when people learn to play their classes. It’s the concept of everything being unbalanced that they balance out. Now when it comes to PvE yea your right. It’s a mess.
I main’d a paladin all through vanilla. The slow leveling and endgame experience left me so DPS-starved I’ve only played mages/warriors/rogues ever since. A plate-wearing healer that has to steal cloth gear from priests because the healing plate was trash. What a failure.
Ive seen so many videos where reck/ret paladins in only t1 with MC weapon (only) easy win so many 1vs1 vs full t2.5 classes with AQ weapons even rank 14s. And it's not just one video from one guy I've seen many of them. And they don't just vs pve noobs. So I think they doing just fine, at least what I can see on the internet here. Haven't played it myself but still the video shows it. :) And I guess just raid as holy get all the items you need the respect or even raid as reck/ret as healer if your guild is nice enought . You want t1/2/2.5 anyway for pvp so you get that as MS as healer . The only thing you need that is OS is a 2g weapon but not many want those as MS anyway since 99% use them for pvp as well. But yeah just my thought on it, when it comes to pvp as paladin. :) good, funny video.
thats because they only show you the wins, put paladins against some actual good players with gear. paladin might win 1/3 but they will only show you the one duel they won.
Index is so used to RP walking he should be fine with ret mobility

Here before McConnell sends this to Asmongold and complains about this shit for like 30 min
