It is impressive how the English keep their treasures. If you build treasures; and wish to keep them for a thousand years (or longer). Build them in England.

We do like to hold onto the past. I am sure that when they were built they never imagined they would survive this long!

I've loved the rich colors of stained glass since I was a small child going to church in a neo-gothic little church in my home town. (Sadly, the church was bulldozed to widen a highway back in 1972.) I'm an American who's never been able to travel out of my home state, let alone to Europe. But it's been a daydream of mine to walk into a cathedral so incredibly old and beautiful. I really enjoyed all the views in this video.

What a absolutely beautiful church, and with a very interesting history! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful church and its eventful history with us. I loved the statue of Constantine looking very regal, cool and confident! Not stuffy at all like so many other statues. Thank you again! 😊

My dad worked on the minster as a apprentice Mason as well as the city walls, also in 1998 my wife's brother was married in the minster due to a family member being the head electrician there. The place is simply stunning.

My father's maternal grandfather was an ecclesiastical sculptor (latter half of nineteenth century). He mostly did work during the heyday of Victorian Gothic, when a lot of older features were ruthlessly updated, unfortunately. He did do work on Southwark Cathedral, not nearly so prestigious as York! You must be very proud of your family's contributions. He died rather young from lung disease from the stone dust (emphysema, I'm guessing). I hope your dad has not suffered any health problems from his work.

I visited the Minster in the late eighties with only Durham and Lincoln being more favored. Awesome place, and the city in whole is amongst my favorites along with Durham and Conway in Wales.
As stated before, I marvel at your technique, being top notch documentary style. Smashing job!

Thanks for this. You do great walks! I was there in 2013, before Covid, and I just walked in, paying with my YorkPass. I can't think of another building where I was so awestruck by the shear workmanship, and devotion of those who built it. The church in Ripon is beautiful too, if on a smaller scale. I wish I'd had more time for a tour of it. Next time.

When I took Art History in college the instructor told us we’d have to identify parts of the Gothic Cathedral, Norte Dame in Paris. When the final exam was given it was a completely different church. When I visited the York Minster I realized that this was the church on my exam! It is spectacular and breathtaking!

Splendid! On our visit to York many years ago, there was a service going on, so we were not able to take a tour before catching the train south. Thank you so much for showing and explaining so many of the incredible details. The Five Sister's window...so moving. Arson is a horrible crime; human life is precious, but the legacy of these beautiful ancient structures must also be protected. I find it interesting how many Roman era structures in the UK were dismantled, buried, built upon, etc., where in Italy they were preserved; perhaps it is something to do with viewing Romans as ancestors versus invaders. I was so looking forward to this Minster tour, as I know well the excellent quality of your work. Cheers!

Such a wonderful visit. I walked all over York, trying to get a picture like the one at the opening of your video. I never could get that perfect shot (too many other wonderful buildings in the way). And when I took my tour of York Minster, the guide was an elderly gentleman who spoke barely above a whisper, so I couldn’t understand anything he said. Thank you so much for filling in all the blanks about the church and it’s history. It’s truly one of the most magnificent places I’ve ever been. Bravo! Safe travels!

Thank you so much for your beautiful video, which took me back to when I visited York Minster in the 1980s. I am so sorry you missed the Undercroft--you will have to make another visit sometime! In the Cathedral shop I bought a paperweight made from stone removed in the restoration that was ongoing at the time of our visit--mostly of the Undercroft, I think; the cathedral's foundations needed strengthening. The paperweight was to benefit the rebuilding fund; it has a white rose of York (plastic, alas) stuck to the top of the little square of stone. I treasure it! I have also enjoyed all your videos on York and other places. (Born in England; immigrated to America.)

Haha well living here you can see at short notice if the weather is going to ok so It is easy then to book a last minute trip knowing it’s not going to rain. Summer is best by far of course. Have fun.

Thank you for the fantastic tour of this church!! Love the stained glass and that nave is so amazingly wide. Any chance you’ll do a video on the cathedral in Wells?

It does, but in fact it is a stabilisation effect of the camera that sometimes causes the weird looking movement of some objects. Seems to happen from time to time on objects sticking out like it does.

The Column is actually upside down which is impressive and there is a Viking sword deep down in the chambers. This sword was offered from the Vikings as a sign of acceptance of Christianity. You wasn’t far from where Guy Fawkes once lived and where The Highway Man Dick Turpin now lives.

Amazing. Glorious. Though if trends continue another hundred years, will it take the same path as Hagia Sophia?

Hi Simon, I love your video's so interesting and informative. York is on the top of my list of places to go as I want to see the National Rail Museum and the Minster of course! Where did you stay? Looks very close to this fabulous work of art

Hello Cathy, it is a fab city, so glad you plan to go sometime. The accommodation was the Park Inn Radisson just over the river. It was pretty cheap in January. 15 min walk to the minster. There is pretty of places to stay some probably cheaper if you go peak time. 😊

@@MemorySeekers one of my colleagues at work has offered me a ride in his car with his wife so am looking forward to that immensely. We were looking at the Premier Inn as it's next door to the station and museum. I love steam trains and love working at the Bluebell railway here on Sussex

The trades men and crafters had a real skill in the past. It's a pity more effort isn't put into the aesthetics now. Thank you for this amazing tour. Please don't apologise about the quality of the clips I just appreciate the effort that you take in the first place.

Someone please tell me what that gorgeous pure vocal piece is, which was playing toward the end of the video (Starting @ 10:29). It sounded a lot like Rachmaninoff’s Vespers. I love that kind of music!

Forgot to mention about the stairs to the top. I didn't go there then, and can't now, partly because I'm out of shape, and also because I'm too old. If you're under 12 or over 70 they won't let you do it.
